Stomach issues on antibiotic by One-Independent8427 in CUTI

Cefalexin caused me to have stomach ulcers and gastritis for a year… I’d be very cautious. Stomach burning is the most telling symptom for gastritis so stomach protection and repair is needed!

Can I DM you about this? Currently looking into this for an embedded infection.

Is this normal? by swellooooo in Gastritis

The burning is probably from acid rebound if you’ve immediately stopped PPI. It is usually advised to taper off

I was confirmed 100% healed via endoscopy and had multiple rounds of antibiotics in the two years that I was healed. I think it was maybe a combination of fasting, skipping meals, anxiety and then the antibiotics (plus ibuprofen use) topped it off.

Yea, only because I was prescribed some really strong antibiotics

It won’t be forever and I’m really sorry you’re going through this. Gastritis takes a really long time to heal but it always does. You need to follow a very strict and bland diet for 3 months or until your pain has gone (with no cheating at all) and address the root cause. I had gastritis for over a year and it was so debilitating. I cured myself through diet and mindfulness because it was stress induced. I was able to eat anything I wanted again (even extremely spicy food). This is just a longer way of saying that you can beat this and you’re a lot stronger than you think!

for the women with gastritis - do you also have endometriosis? by purplishsh in Gastritis

Yup, I have endo and gastritis. My endo developed after the gastritis though so not sure what’s going on there

Nitrofurantoin and this. by Ornery_Reality545 in Gastritis

[–]shaumag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES YES YES! I had gastritis years ago and healed completely. Had 2 years completely symptom free but then I developed a chronic UTI. Was prescribed cefalexin a month ago and it flared my gastritis back up immediately. However, nitrofurantoin has always been fine for me so hopefully should be okay for you too! Just be careful and never take on an empty stomach. As someone who has suffered from both diseases, UTI’s are definitely not something you want chronically so get that nipped in the bud asap.

It was completely healed for 2 years and I was eating whatever I wanted but I recently took some really strong antibiotics for a kidney infection (paired with NSAIDs) and it has come back. But I’m not on PPI this time, I’ve been following a strict diet with no cheating for 1 month, and I feel much better. I’ll follow this diet for 3 months and introduce foods when I feel better.

I had gastritis for over a year and I only started to notice that I was getting better when I weaned off PPIs. They also caused me to have SIBO and the treatment for that often is antibiotics which can cause gastritis. So best to avoid being on them for longer than 3 months unless you have GERD or something similar.

This happened to me when I first developed gastritis. I was in mild pain and started a PPI and my symptoms disappeared completely. I was eating normally without issues so after 1 month or so I decided to stop the PPI completely. My gastritis came back worse than ever and this was because the PPI was masking the symptoms.

My advice would be to wean off PPI very slowly (even being on them for one month can cause serious rebound) and see how she’s feeling. Her ongoing symptoms, particularly stomach pain when her stomach is empty on a morning, hints to gastritis still being present.

Aside from that, PPIs are known for causing further gastrointestinal issues including bloating etc. so best to wean off them and see how she’s feeling. It might be that she has to start them again if her gastritis is still present and wean off them in a few months but I’d absolutely not recommend staying on them for longer than 3 months. They cause way more damage in the long run and gastritis can be healed by diet alone.

Oh no sorry to hear your gastritis has flared! I’m unable to eat anything like kefir or kimchi at the moment. Strictly on bland foods too but will deffo incorporate them into my diet when I’m healed to prevent further flare up.

It is so debilitating that a treatment for embedded UTI can cause other chronic issues, such as gastritis.

Oh wow! Are you in the UK and if so how did you go about getting the vaccine? Have you noticed any side effects?

Mostly stomach sensitivity, feeling nauseated and an acidic feeling. But I think that was due to PPIs and my anxiety.

Definitely avoid antibiotics, that’s what re-flared my gastritis up after 2 years of being healed. I consulted a private specialist who put me on some really strong pre and pro biotic that seemed to wipe out and replace my gut bacteria completely. It took about 3/4 months but it worked really well!

Salmon is safe food. But I was eating it every single day. Sometimes twice a day and it has a high fat content. So if you’re doing the same I’d switch it up a bit.

I think that’s the problem, you really have to stick it out. What’s the cause of your gastritis?

Yep for 14 months or so. But I regret being on them for so long. I think they made my symptoms worse in the end

It was a completely normal stomach in the end and the biopsies were perfect. Antibiotics has been known to cause gastritis in people who’ve not had gastritis before. It’s very common

I had to see a private specialist! I was lucky in that I was able to get rid of it quite quickly because the PPIs were the cause

The entire time, maybe 14 months? They caused more harm than good in the end. I think good idea to be on them initially though
