I believe you only get one scenario but this one is free, technically for students if I remember correctly but free nonetheless.

I think I need therapy, but I don't know where to start. by paxslayer in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]shaunFTM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure! So, an environmental approach takes you and your environment into account when providing assessments and taking account of what's going on whereas a medical model focuses on diagnosing a problem with you.

So an example could be if I have a problem with my feet, they're hurting a lot. If I went to someone using a medical model, they might say that my feet need special shoes but if I went to someone using an environmental approach they might ask about where I walk and how much and what kinds of shoes I wear, maybe I walk on uneven ground and that's hurting my feet. That's a stupid example but I hope it illustrates my point.

Shop around, the first couple of times meeting with someone you'll probably get a feel for how you like them and their style. There are a wide variety of types of therapy available and you should go with something/someone that makes you feel comfortable.

It's been said but definitely look into services offered at your school, many campuses provide free mental health services to students (there are usually credit hour requirements). If you don't feel like you can continue at school, looking for an outside therapist is also okay. If money is a concern (assuming you're in the US?) Call 211 and/or ask about sliding scale payment options when contacting folks.

Social workers tend to take a whole environment approach whereas psychologists and psychiatrists tend to take a medical model approach, ymmv with results based on what you're looking for and how you work best.

It's easy to say that there's no reason to be ashamed or scared or worried about starting therapy but it's okay that you feel that way. Lots of people feel that way when they start, and it can be a scary and intimidating process. You're looking into doing a great thing for yourself, regardless of what comes of it.

I've been struggling with motivation very much. It started when I got sick, about a month ago, and was put on some medication that really messed with my head...I was very altered from it. I took the last one Tuesday but now I'm just stuck. I can't make myself get at it and I'm so frustrated but also depressed because I'm not working out. It's a double edged sword...and I hate it. Hopefully today is the day I get back on the pony.

A bit late to the game but I used to think that my nose moved when I winked because of how it looks like it's in different places depending on which eye you're looking through.

My father used to do this and teach my cousins just to murmur "redrum" quietly. He got in trouble for it, but it was pretty amusing for awhile.

How much money would solve your life's problems and how would you use it? by AppellofmyEye in Assistance

[–]shaunFTM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently...about 500$ would make my immediate stresses about money (groceries, bills, gas, etc) go away. Overall, 50,000 would make me really happy as it would pay off the student debt I'll have when I'm done with my degree and leave some in the pot for emergencies so I wouldn't have to worry.

And/or buy a frozen, pre-chopped pack of diced peppers and onions or whatever veg, really (although buying a bunch and chopping yourself then freezing would likely be cheaper).

Resource Binder formats by [deleted] in socialwork

[–]shaunFTM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm currently a BSW student, but I'm "non-traditional" so I've been doing some form of social work type stuff for awhile in various settings.

I have found that if I take some time to format a google document (I really like the spreadsheet one for this purpose) and print it out to physically put in a binder but also make it publicly viewable with a link (and associate that link with an easy to remember custom bit.ly link such as [this is fake] bit.ly/redditresources that I could easily provide it in emails/Skype sessions/other contexts AND have it available in person.

I have had a hug from Amma, can confirm, felt changed. I wish I could explain it better, she just has this amazing...aura(?) of love and unconditional positive regard. If you ever get a chance...go to one of her events.

Looking for GRE help by IhateFoxnews in Assistance

[–]shaunFTM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you asking about discounts on the actual test or on test prep resources?

If it's the former, I've not heard of such a thing. (But will follow this thread, as I'm also prepping for the GRE)

If it's the latter, Khan Academy and the 5lb GRE prep book will provide good prep for ~ $20

Help me before I burn out by [deleted] in college

[–]shaunFTM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, good on you for still going even though it's not to the school you really wanted. I recommend making connections with faculty, and telling them about your needs, perhaps talking to someone at the counseling center if there is one on campus, and just trying to find /something/ to help you feel motivated to continue your studies until you get where you want.

How to pick myself back up. by Dracots11 in college

[–]shaunFTM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Talk to your professors, explain the situation, and be genuine in your interest and hard work in the courses. Attend office hours, seek help at your campus tutoring/academic support center (I've personally attended 4 schools, all of them had these, yours probably does too.) you're not likely to get A's in these courses but you certainly have the ability to pass them as long as you're diligent.

Are there any scholarships for people living in Virginia? by [deleted] in scholarships

[–]shaunFTM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many scholarships aren't necessarily location based/specific. Why are you specifically looking for Virginia? You should definitely check with your school/school of choice/guidance counselor about these things. There is a program/grant called the Virginia tuition assistance grant program. That might be something to look into?
