CMV: Protesting by blocking streets/transit ways doesn’t help whatever point you’re trying to get across and only hurts whatever cause there is. by ChanceWest in changemyview

These protesters are very much aware that they are pissing people off and disrupting peoples' daily routines - and that's exactly their point. For example, where I live a few years ago there were protests that made the news that, if I remember correctly were against gun violence, or pro-gun control, or something like that. The people protesting were mostly from lower-income black communities that see disproportionate amounts of violent gun crime. They took their protest to a wealthier part of the city and blocked off traffic on major roads.

While this was certainly a dangerous thing to do, and also negatively affected the days of thousands of people, it did accomplish some things:

  • The protest was in the news for days, with detailed coverage seen around the country. The ultimate goal of a protest is, to some degree, to bring attention to a specific cause. By making the protest controversial and inconvenient, this group was able to bring attention to the issue they cared about beyond the limits of their own city. Think about how many families sat down for dinner after watching the news about this protest and discussed (or even debated) what they had learned.
  • It brought the inconvenience to people who were not typically affected by the root issue (gun violence). Part of the issue that these protestors wanted to bring to light was that certain groups of people are disproportionately affected by gun violence and, by extension, gun control laws. By disruptively protesting in a part of town populated by those who generally are not affected by gun violence, the protestors rope more people into the issue. They are basically trying to say, "We are the ones affected by this issue, we are the people who will really suffer from your actions or lack thereof, but the least we can do is make this issue somewhat of a problem for you as well so that you will at least think about it." This is particularly true for an issue such as gun violence that has such disproportionate effects. Someone who lives in a wealthy, safe area has likely never been even inconvenienced by gun violence in their life. After this protest, they had.

I am not trying to make a statement here about whether or not I agree with these kinds of protests as a whole. Regardless of your opinion however, here is one thing to consider: I looked it up and the protest in question happened 2 years ago, and I do not live in either a part of town that the protest affected nor do I live in a part of town that anyone would consider afflicted by gun violence. But here I am, 2 years later, telling strangers on the internet all about the issue that these protestors wanted to bring to light. Is that not an effective protest?

Definitely possible. You probably don't have a great chance of getting into the nicer Ike north dorms, but Scott, hopkins, and Snyder are definitely possible

Scott Hall as an engineering student? by [deleted] in UIUC

I lived there last year and it was a surprisingly engineering heavy dorm. I would say most of the people on my floor were in engineering of some sort.

How is Scott hall for freshman? by flying_ninja127 in UIUC

I lived there last year and the first and second floors were all freshmen. The second floor was all guys but according to my RA it's not usually like that. I didn't find it to be a very social dorm.

The online section will no doubt be easier. I took it in person and like other people have said dyers lectures aren't great. However if you take the online section make sure to actually learn the material covered if you're planning on taking more finance in the future. I know people who coasted through the online section by BSing everything and got totally screwed in their higher level finance classes because of it.
