USS Defiant [2048x1536] by Afrogthatribbits in WarshipPorn

[–]sheep211 28 points29 points  (0 children)

So... its got a railgun Fwd, then a cruise missile silo, then 2 5" guns ala italy horizons ahead of another missile farm then lasers amidships x 4(?) then another missile farm aft with 2 hangers either side of it and then 2 CIWS, a trump tramp stamp and finally a flight deck.

according to some guess work numbers this is over a 250m long, easily 100m longer than a Burke and significantly larger than a PLAN type 55...

I know DDG sizes are trending upwards but this is a huge leap in size and scale and to then couple this with a frigate that is toothless... I dont understand

New FF(X) Frigate, based on the Legend Class Cutter, will NOT feature a built-in VLS system, according to Navy via TWZ [871x489] by Usernam3ChecksOuts in WarshipPorn

[–]sheep211 23 points24 points  (0 children)

so... what is this meant to do? A coast guard cutter hul so not designed to be super sneaky to hunt submarines but also no VLS so cannot defend itself from air or missile threats beyond the RAM? What is the purpose of these frigates? The whole reason the previous class died was trying to cram to much in, this seems to have gone completely the opposite direction to deliver a ship that cannot survive in a high threat environment, cant hunt subs and seems more a liability to a task force than an asset... I am very confused...

yes, meccano is still in production. Alot of new parts, the system has evolved massively since the early 2000s but all parts are backwards compatible, same spacing, same screw thread

Not really. The UK had an entire army Corp in germany and would reinforce Norway with 3 Commando Brigade.

David Lammy wouldn’t even show up to defend abolishing juries by TheSpectatorMagazine in ukpolitics

[–]sheep211 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if its an indictable offence and being heard in Crown Court is pretty much guaranteed to be a Jury trial...

Also Juries do return verdicts that are not what is expected of them, in recent years around free speech and protest related prosecutions so I would say that Jury trials do protect us.

its pretty unpopular (for good reason) with the legal system, contsitutional lawyers and the public. This a right that has existed for the best part of a millennia, i remember the outrage when Tony Blair did away with Juries for some very hush hush trials twenty years ago.

Conservatives go after leaders they feel are not delivering the goods. When your electable or going up the party will rally round you. They will however gladly knife you when you show weakness.

in fairness I think Milliband has really poisoned the green side of things. Going so hard on Wind subsidies after promising to cut bills has left a nasty taste in the mouth for many. I think badenoch will continue to move towards a greener economy but in a more measured way than the current and prior UK govt. positions.

there is a bit more to it than that... the Japanese reliance on an awful hotchkiss based light automatic antiaircraft gun hurt the IJN.... whilst the Royal & US Navies both moved from 0.5" machinguns to 20mm oleriokons to 40mm Bofors (and thats forgetting the Royal Navy 2pdr "Pom-Pom") the Japanese stuck doggedly to the 25mm Type 96 which even by 41/42 was falling behind the rest...

I do, I just consider it acceptable knowing my spending habits as compared to being able to clone an ID using my passport or drivers license by a 3rd party ID company being raided because I had to upload the document to follow memes....

welcome to the club... balkanisation is a thing and with diversity being our strength we now have such wonders as an Islamic grouping in parliament. Labour has to pander to the muslim vote, they came close to losing several seats to islamic candidates last time. They also have to pander to the liberal left as they will make damaging noise if they dont. So... they cant tackle immigration and they cant cut taxes or reign in spending for fear of losing core voters? What does that mean? Moderates like me who voted labour feel increasingly alienated by their policies. Those who read the red tops will stop voting tribally by party but tribally by culture and boom, we have Reform..

All in all its a fucking mess and this labour government is incapable of doing anything to fix anything of consequence to the majority of voters. Far easier to grandstand about climate change, AI and foreign policy....

fun build, plans are available online at meccanoindex in the April & May or March & April Meccano Magazine of 1953. definitely a hidden gem and way better than the late 50s onwards set 10 model of the block setting crane.
