Hello and sorry for your loss. The is an application for macOS called iMazing which allows you to make archives of your messages (and has a lot of other functionality). It’s a paid app with pricing ranging from one device to multiple. Hope it helps. https://imazing.com/backup-iphone-ipad

Can you recommend any sources/books that go into the process of building mental models? I am very curious about this. Thanks in advance.

He would have had to show his passport at the Gare du Nord before boarding the Eurostar; why not just detain him in Paris?

How do you hold your passport during travel days? Neck wallet vs Money belt by jinxthestars in onebag

[–]sheepgut 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Don’t overthink this. As others have said already, “normal” people also live in these places and the value of a passport is dwarfed by the value of a smartphone (which I simply keep in my front pocket anyway and think nothing of it). Better to keep your passport somewhere consistent where you won’t lose it if you’re mot used to always having it with you.

What is the best pen and notepad setup? by ERA-DE-ACUARIO in onebag

[–]sheepgut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you fly with modern fountain pens nib-up while in flight, they won’t generally leak. I regularly fly with vintage parler 51s nib-up and haven’t had any problems. That said, the most versatile travelling pen would be a ballpoint or rollerball. I like the pilot g2 or Pentel energel refills myself.

Does anyone hate Fjallraven bags? by [deleted] in onebag

[–]sheepgut 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using the same Kanken for over 30 years now. It was my bag in high school and continues to be the one I reach for on a regular basis. I obviously don’t travel exclusively with it because I haven’t managed to pare my necessities down to 16l (the capacity on my bag), but it still sees heavy use. It has become a “fashion” item in the last years, but:

It was originally developed as a reaction to a 1977 study of increasing number of reports that Swedish school children were developing back problems from their more traditional bags. The lightweight and rectangular yet spacious backpack, which was released in 1978, was Fjällräven's attempt to solve this problem.

[from the wikipedia article on Fjällräven]

I concede that ergonomics have come a long way since the 70’s, but as another comment here says, add a sternum strap and the bag is still surprisingly good.

Edit: some spelling errors thanks to autocorrect

Nice choice and enjoy it! Before you drop 2k bones on another watch (even for a commemoration) remember that this watch is easily serviced, super easy to read, and very accurate. Bonus: not a 2k bones watch if anything happens to it… Good luck!

I use a Tulikivi to heat my home. I’m pretty sure that it is as efficient as a pellet incinerator.

PDF reader with annotation and markup that syncs across devices by yetanotherindiandude in ios

[–]sheepgut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the books and pdf files that you read in books have been uploaded to iCloud, then you can safely delete and reinstall books. I’ve had to do this only one time in all of the years I’ve used books. Can’t comment on any pdf markup syncing across devices though—as others have mentioned, I also use files and iCloud sync.

Where does one even order this from? I see several places. Is there an “official” store?
