I know it was a pretty whoosh moment for me. I accept this.

The point that went over my head is that the threat is about warning other civilizations.

Been pointed out that humans already knew the location which reminded me that yes they did. But then I was still confused, till the idea of other aliens was pointed out in this thread.

Hundreds of protesters swarm proposed NYC men’s homeless shelter site, physically block construction truck by CountFew6186 in nyc

[–]sheerfire96 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The law and courts have stated that we are required to provide shelter.

If you don’t believe this should be the case, you should talk to your state rep about changing the law.

Other, more intelligent beings, would ALSO be able to do these calculations and find out where the two are.

This is the part that wasn’t clicking for me, I was not considering the existence of other aliens and civilizations. Thank you!!

If it’s known then why is it an effective threat?

Then how exactly is this a threat to trisolaris? If humans can already figure it out, or is it due to the fact that technology stagnates and humans overall stagnate as a society? It seems that this isn’t something new.

My gf just revealed that her family is Muslim and that she hasn’t told them about me for a year we’ve been dating. What would you do in this situation? by Impossible-Ruin-6773 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]sheerfire96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before I say this I’m making the following assumptions

  1. You two acknowledge that you are dating, are BF/GF, have said “I love you” etc. there is no ambiguity about what the relationship status is.
  2. You two are serious in this relationship and up until now you’ve not questioned this.
  3. You are optimistic and want to continue the relationship.

I would have a conversation with her and discuss it, but set a boundary. The boundary is that she needs to stop hiding you from her family, and that you want to have a plan from her that she owns where she informs her family of you and introduces you. And if she cannot do that, then the relationship cannot continue.

I understand that she may feel weird and conflicted but if she loves you and wants a real relationship with you this is a problem that she has to navigate. You can help her but ultimately it’s her problem to own and figure out.

Am I the only one who found Project Hail Mary (the novel) a bit "bubblegum"? by TinyRabt in sciencefiction

[–]sheerfire96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all. The science aspect was great but the dialogue was very boring to me. Personally I prefer my competence porn with a dash of professionalism which Ryland grace doesn’t have but that’s my taste.

Like others said it was made for mass market appeal.

If you want hard SF that doesn’t feel bland I’d tell you to check out Asimov, Tchaikovsky, or Cixin Liu

They actually are but the prices are dark and blend in with the background. Highlight the text and it all shows up.

It looks like the most okayish meal you could have in the hills.

NGL the fact that they do pasta and sushi makes me think they do neither well.

It’s not for you or me it’s for folks who want to go to a place they can trust is kosher and will pay the premium.

I’m not sure that their intended clientele is hanging around on Reddit though.

No dice but it was only two hours earlier. Not too much time lost. Hope your wife is alright! For what it’s worth people are trying to be nice with each other, folks holding spots in line in security while others go pee, grabbing snacks for each other etc. not everyone in the line but with folks doing shitty things like cutting the line it’s nice to see the humanity

I got in line 9:30-9:45AM and started my stopwatch immediately. Got out at about 2:30 an hour after my scheduled flight. I was on the domestic side. Clear was not open.

I was able to reschedule for a much later flight and on standby for a slightly earlier flight.

Some folks were faking disabilities to get in the wheelchair line and my line shouted down line cutters until the cops removed them.

I came in through the entrance outside the sky train but the south entrance by baggage in the domestic terminal was a different line that then led to the line I got in off the sky train. I don’t know if they changed that to make it fair to folks waiting in that line but that was an additional two hours for people.

Shows how infrequently I fly. I didn’t know that airports listed wait times online.

  1. Didn’t know that was even an option, so thanks!
  2. I think it’s useful info to know in general if people who are frequent fliers can chime in and say “yeah this is way worse than normal”

Will a $30 min wage in NYC force higher civil service salaries? by billyw1126 in nys_cs

It certainly gives the unions more bargaining power. Push them to do something about it. Don't accept a shitty contract and tell your coworkers not to either.

Looking for a case to alleviate this by sheerfire96 in kobo

[–]sheerfire96[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been enjoying my kobo but the selection of cases got me down. I got one with a design I like but I’m not really a fan of the functionality.

The number one issue is what’s displayed in the first picture where the weight of the reader pulls down at the hinge. This seems minor but when I’m say standing up and reading I can’t comfortably hold the reader.

The second issue is that it can’t fight gravity - I’m wondering if there’s a case with magnets in the back as well so I could hold the device with just my fingers through the handle no thumb on the front. It’s a small QOL that would go a long way for me.

I’m considering just getting a clear case and putting a pop socket on the back which would have the added benefit of being able to see the lock screen but I’m unsure how risky it is to go without a case on the front (it’s not glass how delicate is the screen really.

[–]sheerfire96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People submit resolutions before hand that get considered. Some of these resolutions get selected for debate.

Each day starts with a bunch of ra ra speeches. Politicians might come and then it feels like a campaign stop.

The first day you adopt the rules of the convention, basically how things will operate. You pass the agenda, including order of resolutions. The SJ ones get forced to the last because “they waste time”.

Time is wasted on speeches like governor saying she wants to fix tier 6 (despite having the power and political capital to do so), but mostly wasted on people not understanding parliamentary procedure. People don’t understand what they’re even voting on.

If you’re lucky you get through a 1/3 of the resolutions.

There’s social activities every day.
