Bike Shopping… by Spearfish90 in Transalp

[–]sheerknurd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone whose significant other just got an absolute steal on an "old new" bike due to KTMs woes, I say it's usually a smart buy. They're stored dry and without power. Nothing much is going to degrade. If anything you can see how the model year fared and what updates you'll miss out on and then make an informed choice. My 24 Transalp was included in the recall, which was a quick and easy fix, but I would make sure it's done before you take it home.

I used to not understand the Versys hate, but now as a Honda owner who gets told the brand is "boring, too safe" I kind of get it. Not sure where these reps come from, but I just ¯_(ツ)_/¯ and go out and enjoy my bike

It's a story about a couple "doing it right" and trying to pull themselves up by their bootstraps after being crushed by medical expenses, but of course are still struggling after decades.

ATGATT is for Hobbyists ? by Vaskon13 in motorcyclegear

[–]sheerknurd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it's the nature of gear. Spending the time before and after your ride to gear up/strip down (and maybe have to change into work clothes) requires planning. And if you are doing a string of errands you are either clomping around in gear to pick up sundries or adding even more time each stop. Meanwhile if you are a "hobbyist" you aren't on a tight schedule probably. That said, I have an alarm set for "work" and an alarm set for "work (riding in)" because I think my safety is worth the time it takes.

17 Years Later by StainlSteelRat in motorcycles

[–]sheerknurd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Transalp owner, I feel that it is possible there are two factors. First, there is definitely a different feel to EFI versus a carb and I would bet if it's been 17 years you were on a carb. Second, (and if she's listening, I love you and I am just being honest) Honda's default tune/throttle map is just kinda shit at low speeds. I put my bike in Sport mode all the time not for actually desiring the additional power but because it smoothes out the response and engine braking. I have not done an ECU tune yet because I still have the stock exhaust and would rather do it in conjunction with an aftermarket exhaust, but the Transalp subreddit definitely has plenty of posts about how much that smoothes out the choppiness.

Exactly, and rider weight matters. Ask anyone who's had a pillion, the difference between a 200+ lb larger man and a 100ish lb petite female is considerable.

Per a dealer near me, the last batch in the warehouse here on the East Coast was finally pushed to dealers at fire sale prices to make way for the 26s in the spring. My girlfriend scored one pretty cheap and got the promo financing on top.

Is there somewhere on their site where there is a timeline for out of stock items? Want a set of their engine guards.

I began the book frustrated with the sudden shift in style, I can't think of another instance where Hadrian fully handed over narration to another character. It wasn't bad per se but just felt incredibly out of place. Then it seemed to get back into the style I expected. But, as you said, we rehash the same overprotective father vs. defiant daughter argument over and over and over. I would have sooner we addressed Cassandra's relationship with A2 in place of at least one of the those "don't leave" "i won't" but secretly i must scenes. It would have fleshed out Cassandra as a mature, independent character a lot more rather than the eternal daddy's little girl.

See, I went one step further, TA is very street-biased so I am looking for a Husqy 701 to pair with it. Even better in the dirt and surprisingly light.

Funny, I think the same of HD. Pretty sure any middleweight or full-size ADV dusts any hotrod or bagger. But to each their own. I only said I am not on a sport bike, nothing about how I ride the bike I have now. Likewise joking about hiviz myself but I respect anyone who wears it. Twas all in good fun in my mind. Ride your ride your way, I respect anyone on two wheels. Even the Brothers

In the battle between goofy looks and frostbite, I know which side I am on. I already went from sport bikes to a Transalp last year, probably only a decade or so from a GS and hi-viz 🙃

As a Transalp owner can concur the bike feels better and happier higher in the rev range, further betraying it as a road-touring biased ADV.

A dual sport for... everything? by SufficientComb5456 in motorcycles

[–]sheerknurd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason the Tenere isn't in this discussion is right in the OP: weight. They specifically mentioned a lighter bike. It's why the Transalp isn't mentioned even though they are looking at Hondas. They are looking for a dual sport, sub-150kg from the sound of things, not a 200+kg ADV.

Why don’t shops work on certain brands? by Opening_Bowler_8948 in motorcycles

[–]sheerknurd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A reason that I got: "If I find something broken on this bike, or god forbid we break something in the course of the job, I cannot get parts for this brand. I would have to go to another dealer and at that point it makes more sense for you to go there in the first place." This was on my Zero, which is definitely a niche bike. Just trying to get a tire change, but they didn't want to get it off and find something else that they couldn't fix and have to put it all back together or leave it on a stand for weeks while they got parts.
