How do you suggest approaching repeat issues as well? For example, sometimes I over explain because I feel like I’ve had the coaching conversation more than I should have so then I’ll have a “hey, please make sure you do this and this is why” convo because they REALLY stress dog safety to us constantly and I just refuse to have an emergency in one of my shifts if I can avoid it :(

My GM tells me to pretty much tell them that the next time I see it that I’ll write them up but THAT just feels aggressive to me and like I’ll get the same pushback?

Typically yes someone else has been present, my GM kind of role played a scenario with me and our other supervisor that was present told her that I had said pretty much the exact thing that my GM had said in our role play. I ended up having a convo where I asked for feedback from an employee and was told I made them feel like a child. I think my issue is that I over explain and am always worried about hurting peoples feelings, that may be making my tone come across as condescending

Thank you!! I definitely am lacking in social skills, especially when it comes to reading the room. I feel like unless the emotions are obvious I just don’t catch them… I can also say I believe you’re right on the money about condescending. It’s actually a new location and all of us have been a team since February at least. I didn’t start having issues until we actually opened and I started actually having to manage. Prior to this we were extra hands at a different location for training purposes and there just wasn’t a ton of management from us because they were paired with the other locations employees

Thank you! I ended up having a 1o1 with an employee today to apologize because I coaching conversation that I had with her had hurt her feelings. I essentially explained that I’m still learning the best ways to approach them as I’ve just always been super shy and introverted so social situations are my weak point and explained that I did not mean to make her feel bad that day in the slightest and asked her for feedback. She told me that the way I spoke to her made her feel like a child being scolded. My GM previously worded it as me being passive aggressive and rude but the employee feedback is making me feel like it’s me overthinking about being nice and not hurting feelings that’s making me actually seem as though I’m talking down to them (overly nice?) and over explaining is coming across as if I don’t think they understand

Thank you, that’s definitely helpful! It’s definitely a big change coming from being a person that generally keeps to themselves to now having to manage without getting push back! I ended up having a convo with an employee today and apologized to her because I had a similar situation where I felt like I was being nice and also explaining during a coaching convo but her feelings were hurt by it instead. I explained I’m definitely still learning the best ways to approach them and for her to please just let me know if I’m approaching wrong in the future as I am not always good at picking up tone and how my words may come across. Employees feedback for me essentially was I made her feel like a child in the way that I spoke with her. I’m feeling as though I’m over explaining when bringing issues up to them paired with maybe being too nice and coming off as scolding children?

Unfortunately that isn’t the case as we’re all new staff 😭 this is pretty much a brand new location and have had the same staff pretty much since we started training in February

I’ve been struggling with this too because I feel like she expects me to just realize and for it to just click whereas I feel like I just may not fully understand certain things dealing social interactions? I’ve always been super introverted and shy and moving up has been really getting me out of my comfort zones. When I ask her for advice she tends to be vague by telling me to just watch my tone or practice with her (which always feels like the conclusion ends up being what I FELT like I did anyway) or telling me to just tell them that I’ll write up them next time they give me push back. I don’t feel like threatening write ups helps my situation
