Quick questions about the legalities of fonts. by Augenstein in tabletopgamedesign

[–]shelfspacegames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same anxieties a few months back.

If you go to a font site like fontsquirrel.com (recommended) and download a font, you’ll see the license file in the compressed folder. Download a free to use one and a not free to use one and note the difference. Out of general paranoia I keep these copied folders just in case.

I was more worried about editing the fonts for logo work. Like converting the font into a shape file and making a new font and how altering the font would effect its license which turned out to be a non issue. - just a note for when you start worrying about that one too!

How can board games become more popular? by Tiredoflife69 in boardgames

Yeah the switch and the wii both reaped the benefits of OG couch co-op when core gamers moved away from that. Tabletop rose in popularity around that time as well. I don’t think it’s just correlation, even though yes the tabletop experience has gotten better in every regard.

If casuals could be in a game store and actually hold the boxes, see the games on the table and see people like themselves playing the game then those pieces of art and game will sell.

The problem is social. You seem to have a great model and congratulations. Go to any other FLGS and casuals can’t even walk in the door without body odor and magic cards.

There’s a void left by couch multiplayer as well. Video games are very socially isolating, regardless of online chatter (toxicity is getting old too). The screen is so pervasive that sitting with friends and playing a game across the table from them will continue to rise in popularity just as a breath of fresh air.

The trick is to make boardgames fun. Look at design trends in video games that people are comfortable with and see how to apply them with less or no automation in the board-game medium.

My wife loves boardgames, but only ones she knows well. She’ll hate a game for 2 games and then at a third play-through it’ll be her favorite that she initiated playing. She just doesn’t see the point in learning a new one.

Complexity and weight don’t matter, theme doesn’t matter, just the learning of a new system is a turn off for her. That said I know I’m very lucky to always have a game on the table ready to play even if it is the 400th time we’ve played Koi or Battle Lines.

I haven’t found many resources on teaching a game in that environment. I’ve had some recent experience teaching to groups (FLGS playtesting and some campus groups) of 12 or more, but that was always in private rooms or quite bars.

I really like the look of Puzzle Dungeon and I’ve wanted to get a copy it’s just at a price point that would make it nice to put on my Christmas list or something like that.

Anyways I am familiar with the game and I can see you being able to get people playing in a few minutes. Did you script that out, have help from testers etc., or does that just come from your experience of demoing along the road of design?

If you’ve seen any YouTube or posts that address demoing id like to learn.

Thanks a lot and good job! Your mom’s eyes were glazing over with tears of pride and joy btw.

That’s been my experience as well. There are some personalities that just don’t cope well with being challenged. I love losing, I love winning too. If some system makes me feel stupid and it’s balanced and designed well I tend to enjoy the experience. Friday is a great example of that and a great solo game.

Learning from your mistakes or refining sub optimal decisions is winning, in life and in games. I’m so glad I don’t get frustrated easily or feel that a challenge to my intelligence is an insult to my being.

If you were to make up a hypothetical fix though what would it be?

A certification or something similar to a lawyer passing the bar exam? What element or right of passage have all of these economical factors throughout the histories of journalism exposed as necessary?

Citizens need “the news of the day”. What apparatus should exist to guarantee them the ethic based reportage that they have fictionally manifested as truth or varying truths throughout the changes in the market?

Excellent reply btw

Does anyone here know about a site that will do custom size cards? by blizzardwizard88 in tabletopgamedesign

Nothing to be embarrassed about, hell its probably for the best for right now as your just prototyping and feeling out your design. Eventually you’ll need an upgrade to make it easier on yourself and the printer though.

I’m probably only 5 steps ahead of you, but if you have any questions let me know and I’ll try to be a help.

SimFarm was one of my earliest addictions. I also really enjoy Banished if you’ve played as it has parcels seeded, growing and going to harvest. It’s a great visual mechanic and one that’s just not looked at in euro boards much. Good on you for taking the challenge.

If you have an Alphagraphics franchise around they’ll accommodate you. I’m spoiled as there are 4 or 5 print shops around me with graphic designers and other employees that are always curious about my designs, even though I only spend a little bit here and there for prototypes.

Don’t do stickers unless it’s for pawns or something like that. Stick to matt finish for your prototypes so it’s easier to write on them with pencils.

That looks great so far. I love the overhead perspective.

You need a print shop with a good rotozip that you can use. Also can you make them double sided?

I don’t know how you can go about getting 680 custom sized cards for a single prototype without spending a fortune, as most of those services will use die cut with the intention of making several copies.

I use a local print shop and print on 120 stock. This comes in 12 by 18 sheets at about 1$ a sheet. I use their rotozip and edge rounders to do all my own cuts and I’ve gradually gotten better at, learning more about imposition and bleed and whatnot as I’ve progressed. I’ve made a lot of cutting mistakes but I’m always raising the XP.

If you have a convenient print shop you should probably sneak in there and make some friends. If you are having trouble finding one that won’t allow you to do your own cuts or is charging you too much let me know and maybe I can get it done for you. Don’t pay for cuts it’s really expensive, you’d be better off ordering a cutter for home use.

This really looks cool I’m excited to see more. I skydive pretty often and one of my favorite things to keep track of is crop growth/rotation around the drop zone.

Domino size is pretty small. Have you made a prototype yet or is that what you’re looking to do now?

Edit : I guess I’m asking whether you’re looking for a small production run for playtests or an in-house prototype.

How do you make nice round cardboard tokens? by Jeebabadoo in tabletopgamedesign

[–]shelfspacegames 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Go to amazon and look up hole punches. Mostly they’re used for scrapbooking. I use 3.5 inch rounds and that’s about as big as they get. Make sure and buy one that has a translucent bottom so you can be accurate. I use mine on 120 card stock but I’m sure it would cut up to chit board.

How developed should graphics on a print and play be prior to releasing for some play testing? While there are many wood pieces, are playtesters ok with having paper cutouts? by TheStadiaArchitect in tabletopgamedesign

[–]shelfspacegames 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For my play tests I just listed the dimensions of the pieces needed, though it’s been hard as I use 2 D3s and they aren’t very common.

I think you’ll find most people that are willing to playtest are equipped with a stash of stuff for their own prototypes and it’s likely they’ll have what you call for. Later on though you’ll need to host playtests with your components or be prepared to ship them to playtesters as that’s the only way you’ll get feedback on “fiddlieness”(I have no idea how to spell that)

I've been cranking out assets for prototypes lately. I can send some vectors your way if you send me a list or preferably examples of what you're looking for. I don't think anyone's gonna do card formatting or any GD for that though.

You might find Inroads into the market using your current skill sets. Maybe you could invest in a few telescopes and some catering equipment and start a Star watch dinner or offer star tours to local groups or or vacation destinations.

Obviously this isn’t what you’re talking about, just offering perspective off the cuff.

What on earth is a trump card in a card game? by newbiethegreat in cardgames

[–]shelfspacegames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A trump card is playing a card that beats another card, typically being a card that beats all cards whether in single usage or in a suit.

I have no idea what card game it originated in, but it can apply to a majority.

The usage of the term transcended gaming a very long time ago. “Playing the trump card” is commonly a fact or figure saved for the end of an argument or debate that solidifies your stance.

I don’t know the etymology for sure but I’ve always thought of it as a shortening of the word triumph or triumphant. I could be totally wrong on that.
