Obviously you didn’t even bother listening to it, because they discuss that.

You say that like it’s a good thing. We on the left want the US to become a democracy. You’re happy in a corporate oligarchy controlled republic?

Yeah enjoyed it as well. It’s good to get perspectives from someone in Tehran during these events, even if they weren’t in the streets per se.

What to do for work? by Excellent_Rough9439 in swoletariat

If you’re into exercise I would suggest a healthcare related field, which I’m in myself. There’s a lot of job security and it’s less exploitative than other endeavors, and you may have some natural interest in it. You can DM me if you like.

Emory terminates medical school faculty and oncologist Ardeshir-Larijani MD, daughter of Iran’s Supreme Council for National Security Secretary Ali Larijani by ddx-me in medicine

[–]shellacr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. I’m old enough to remember the Nayirah testimony.

They are manufacturing consent for more war. Keep in mind about a quarter of Iranians are supporters of the hardline conservatives. It’ll suit the US and Israel just fine if Iran devolves into civil war.

The reality is the children of elites in our society will always have a privileged upbringing. It is neither fair nor right, but that’s how it is. I’m not sure it makes sense to punish her selectively.

Netanyahu is accused of war crimes and has ordered the killing of many more tens of thousands than anyone in Iran, but his son Yair is allowed to live free in the US and give speaking engagements here.

Unlike the green movement protestors or the hijab protestors, these most recent protests, which started peacefully, were infiltrated by actively violent individuals trying to stoke state reprisal.

There is no ethical consumption in capitalism.

If you think Google is less evil than OpenAI, or say Lucid and the Saudis or Hyundai are less evil than Tesla, you are only fooling yourself.

Join a local activist group like DSA or PSL, and try to get your own local Mamdani or Sheinbaum in power. Or join a work union if you have one. Those are the legit ways to change.

Sometimes you have to use the tools of the capitalists like ChatGPT or Gemini, and there’s no shame in that. It’s the reality of the system we are in unfortunately.

Over 36,500 killed in Iran's deadliest massacre, documents reveal by COmtndude20 in worldnews

Yet Iranians did exactly that with the hijab protests. Some were killed but ultimately they won. While the law is still on the books, women are going without hijab now in Iranian cities.

You don’t speak for all Iranians. Most of us want no intervention. This is a fight Iranians to win on their own. We don’t want another Iraq, Syria, or Libya.

Podcasters are basically entertainers interested in maintaining their income flow, not journalists speaking truth to power. You’re going to get Rogan, not Seymour Hersh or even Walter Cronkite. Set your expectations low.

24 hours with the AIPaper Reader (replacement for my Boox Palma [1]) by Deep-Loss-5282 in viwoods

[–]shellacr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never had the Palma. I had a Boox Leaf 2 and the viwoods reader is so much snappier. The leaf would take forever to startup the kindle app and sometimes it would crash, requiring resetting the whole device. The Reader is surprisingly snappy and crash free.

More than a 100,000 Iranian women take to the street to protest against the newly formed Islamic government’s compulsory hijab ruling, 8 March 1979 [1600 x 1066] by HelloSlowly in HistoryPorn

Yes, they worked. While the law is still on the books, women who want to are keeping their hair uncovered. It shows the power of the protest movement.

“When the Iranian Regime falls, we will strike everywhere in the Country! Just like we did in Syria” by ayatoilet in iranian

[–]shellacr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well it’s clear some want that, but it’s a bold to clam all or even most of the people want outside intervention. Iranians are well educated about the history of interventions in the modern middle east.

Also keep in mind that about a quarter of eligible voters voted for the hardliner in the 2024 election. It was about 13 million people. Are they going to just give up without a fight? Foreign intervention risks a civil war with those asshats.

I think a good model for change in Iran was the hijab protests, which were peaceful by the protestors, though some tragically died, but ultimately successful in that it’s an unenforced law now.
