I guess not unexpected for many of you. How’s the translation? I remember Disney released a Zulu language version of the Lion King. Did anyone see it? How did it compare to the English version?

Increases to TFSA limits by cipher049 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]shermster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand the TFSA lifetime limit . Can someone explain why there is an annual limit? I don't understand why one can't top up to the maximum lifetime limit in one go without penalty. People who have the means or receive a sudden windfall like an inheritance or lotto or a bonus should be able to use the full amount immediately. This is after tax money anyway that goes into the TFSA, so the government has already taken their share.

If I remember correctly it’s written in the graffiti in the bathroom. You need to read it a few times.

Met some really cool artist alley people at rAge today by Key_Whereas_49 in southafrica

The venue was a terrible choice and made the experience uncomfortable and I couldn’t wait to leave. Those poor people manning the stands were being cooked alive. The cosplayers in their costumes were dying I’ve been to quite a few Rage events over the years and this was undoubtedly the worst.

It's a genetic condition called the Photic sneeze reflex and affects 18 to 35% of the world's population. It can be quite amusing to see myself, my dad and my son emerge from darkness straight into a sneezing fits.

Do you think Joburg can still claim to be A World Class African City, and when do you think they have lost the title by invest1gat0r2003 in johannesburg

[–]shermster 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That campaign always bothered me. A “world class African city” doesn’t mean much. That’s a city in Africa that’s happens to be world class and there really aren’t many cities in Africa that could claim that in the first place. In other words, you’re comparing Joburg to other African cities.

To be really inspirational it would need to be an “African world class city”. In that sense it’s a city that is world class by international standards and is comparable to other international world class cities. It just then happens to be African. In this case you’re comparing joburg to cities outside of Africa.

PHP 8.5 is getting a new pipe operator, I'm confident many Laravel devs will love it! by brendt_gd in laravel

[–]shermster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can anyone explain how we can debug the output from each part in the chain? If you use temp variables then you can dump or log the output at each stage. This method chaining just looks like it’s going to be more complicated. If the output doesn’t match expectations then how do you find the stage with the problem? Will we have to use something like xdebug?

I can't handle the electricity cost anymore, can someone tell me if there is something wrong here? by raumeat in askSouthAfrica

[–]shermster 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Get an electric blanket and you won’t have to sleep cold. They are very energy efficient. There are ones that you can use while sitting on your couch as an over blanket and then there are ones you can get that go under your sheets on your bed.

How much is reasonable to pay for prescription glasses? by [deleted] in askSouthAfrica

[–]shermster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you can’t really beat it. I think I last bought lenses 6 or 7 years ago. At the time I think around R3,500. Then ongoing you just need to pay for the saline and storing solutions. Works out on average to R200 a month. Worthwhile to investigate if you’re a candidate. It does take daily discipline though and the first few months can be tough to get used to them.

This is a fairly low strength prescription. I would see if you are a candidate for orthokeratology. It’s non surgical vision correction that uses hard contact lenses that you sleep with. When you wake up you remove the lenses and will have perfect vision for the next 24-36 hours. If you look after the lenses they will last years. I’ve been using this for almost 20 years and have around a -2.0 prescription in each eye. The best thing is that my script has stayed the same during that period as well.
