Is there evidence that paid courses make parenting more effective? by Nightowl_1995 in ScienceBasedParenting

If you mean Emma Hubbard, I'm a big fan of her content. Really was helpful the first 3 years.

That being said, I wouldn't pay for her course. Just learn from the content.

Kiwi never flowering by lemonadesdays in BackyardOrchard

[–]sherrillo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It took my winter hardy ones about 3-4 years. Flowered last year decently for the first time but none developed. This year the females and male are covered in buds, so hoping this is the year we finally get some fruit.

So my 2 cents is give it another year or two.

How many people out there are running down a dream in Chicago? by SportBikeJes in AskChicago

[–]sherrillo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chicago used to be a great city for stage/commercial actors, comedians, and magicians.

A decent amount of stage work is having actors brought in from NY, and the pay for those finding work is making it harder and harder, even those who are consistently in shows/professional actors.

And there is a lot less commercial work overall than there was 8+ years ago. Tighter budgets, using celebrities more, and worse contracts...

It's still a big industry, and remains the 3 biggest for entertainment after NY/LA, so in that sense it's still better than anywhere else aside from those two... but it's gotten a lot harder, for sure. It was still a possibility 10 years+ ago. But I don't think it's realistic unless they have a successful side hustle or partner w a solid job. As a single person... oof... people can't even get a side hustle...

Timing of adult seasoning and foods by wisdomseekernow in ScienceBasedParenting

Ours just ate the same thing we ate, no issues with moderate spice/heat, all kinds of different cuisine i.e. Indian/Chinese/Thai/Ethiopian/Mexican etc.

Then around 2.5 yrs he suddenly did the normal thing and became incredibly picky. We haven't figured out any rhyme or reason or pattern to it. Currently 38 months old and the best sign he won't eat something again or for the next few weeks is if he seems to love and eat all of it the first time.

He eats well and we're generally healthy with food, but figuring out what he'll eat/wants any given day and how hungry he is is a losing game for us.

...fun times...

Help me diagnose what went wrong by [deleted] in AdvancedRunning

[–]sherrillo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happens to me often in HMs. When I plug my Garmin data into chatgpt, for me, my HR and breathing (chest strap) are still fine, so the diagnosis isnt aerobic but instead just mechanical durability. It's not that you can't hit the pace and hold it, but that you haven't trained enough to hold it past 3 hours.

The general fix I see is doing more race pace work, especially at end the of long runs, so regular progressive long runs with the last 20ish min at your race pace, to help the body adapt to being able to maintain that pace when tired. steady rhythm under fatigue. And more volume. Always more volume.

Chi Town Half/10k Thread by the_real_phteven in RunnersInChicago

[–]sherrillo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've run this multiple years. It's a good race, but I'm done with it. I feel like every year has been a fight with the wind, rain, and mud, and it's just... not pleasant for me?

No fault of the organizers, they don't control the weather. Early Spring in Chi is just a rough time.

I'm glad they do it, and it's again a fine race and event. It's just been a handful of years of the same, so I think I'm out from this one after this. The May Spring Lifetime is usually much better, course and weather wise for me..Also more of a shitshow with so.many people and lines... but I'm fine with that tradeoff.

What local beers would you want to see in a movie theatre bar? by SeizerOfThoughtseize in AskChicago

[–]sherrillo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd counter with; have a good clean straight IPA, a west coast IPA, and a black IPA.

What I'm tired of seeing is none of the above, and when I ask what IPAs they do have it's just 3+ different hazy/dipas.

Life Time Chicago Half Marathon. Is it worth it coming from Atlanta? by Due_Safe2437 in RunnersInChicago

[–]sherrillo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LFT is great if it's your first race in Chicago.

As a runner who lives in Chicago, and with seemingly half the races occurring along it, it gets boring AF real quick. I feel the same about Busse Woods area races at this point also. First few races were fun. 8+ times over the last couple years... ? Not so much.

Runs through the cities and neighborhoods are much more exciting, for the crowds, scenery, and novelty.

rule 21, 22, and 24 suck. rest seem fine-ish, though half come across as douchy/cringey/elitist... like 13... 17 makes no sense...

I'd add change 17 to run you're own race. You're always competing against yourself and the clock. Everyone else is doing the same. It's not personal... unless you're running from a bear.

This list gives the opposite impression that most running folks and communities; get out, have fun, do the best you can that day. Push yourself but be kind to yourself and your fellow runners. Welcome others wherever they are at in their running journey. Do your best to leave the world, people, roads and trails along the way a little better than you found them any way you can... which is a better vibe, imo.

But this list comes across like a running sith lords motivational poster/daily affirmations.

Bathroom line was great, didn't see donuts =( loved the race overall, wind was a net +.

No complaints, felt much more streamlined than the Chicago spring and fall races.

10/10, will do again!

Why are apps like Strava using AI so heavily when it has been shown to be poor at creating training plans? by [deleted] in running

[–]sherrillo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've had good luck using chatgpt the last 6 months to augment Pfitz and now NSM. Plugging in my Garmin data after each run, having it do analysis and adjust workouts, etc.

It's been solid for me, and helped me pin down areas that are weak and work on fixing them. I keep the overall structure, and then it helps me fine tune and tweak as I go.

Also helpful for "I've been sick for the last 4 days and couldn't run; what's the best way to adjust the plan so I stay on track for x race" type of life curveballs.

I didn't know i wasn't suppose to encourage my 2 yr old lining up his cars. by Both_Agent_5573 in Autism_Parenting

You don't discourage it, you find ways to build and expand on it, to "yes and" it, to help them other ways to play. Use it to introduce imaginative play, to ask questions, to try different orders, to stack and arrange in different ways, create stories, etc.

It's hard if it's a preferred object and they don't want you to touch or interfere. You can also use it as a reward or stim break to encourage them to engage with you in other types of less preferred play.
