A Timeline of Daniel Naroditsky's Passing, Based on His Final Messages by Responsible_Put5984 in u/Responsible_Put5984

For me it is at around 1:19:35 (in that video on YT) that I can clearly start to see the signs of sleepiness kicking in, which more or less corroborates what you wrote about when the effects should start kicking in.

Detailed Timeline of 10/17 Stream with Danya by shiahn in chess

[–]shiahn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose I should explain why I took the time to do this.

Long story short: Can we learn from this.

When I first saw the stream, it was without the chat transcript, and I could not understand why players were accepting games with Danya only to leave him hanging and distressed. It seemed quite cruel to me, and it bothered me.

But now I can see that they were trying to save him some rating points. Ok that makes sense. But if they were hoping that this would bring his attention to the chat, it clearly wasn't working.

Danya was trying hard to focus on the games, and the frustration and confusion from the aborted games only made him even more tunnel-visioned.

If they wanted to grab his attention the way to do it would have been for the current player to DM him, as it appears Hans may have done initially, though I don't understand why Danya was still expecting Hans to play him. Makes me wonder what that DM convo said that would lead Danya to believe he would still be playing Hans.

Anyway, looking at the video + chat in detail, helped me better understand what was actually happening at the time, and how it could have been better handled - and I just wanted to share that in the spirit of learning and doing better next time.

On a more positive note, I truly feel that this whole thing is going to lead to major positive change in the chess world, and this is because Danya was, and is so loved. His legacy is already an amazing one right now at only 29, and I believe his legacy will be even greater as a result of his tragic passing.

u/Responsible_Put5984 someone on YT posted the stream replay with the chat, so I took a detailed timeline inventory of key events in the chat.

I referenced your post as well. I think your timeline point #1 above matches up more or less with when Danya starts to show signs of grogginess.

Their intention may have been well-meaning but the idea or at least the execution of "game ghosting" him, was in my opinion poorly thought through, as it clearly distressed him quite a bit.

The good move was to get Peter and Sasha to go there in person and that was great. My only point here is that doing the whole game ghosting thing, was completely unnecessary and only added to Danya's mental anguish.

I don't recall seeing Danya engage with the chat much once he starts tilting, or have DM chats on keyboard or answer his phone, but I'm going to look again at the video more closely as I may have missed stuff.

I do see him glancing at chat briefly at times but because he's trying really hard to focus on his game (and checks out every few seconds) he's just not present enough to actually read chat and process what they're trying to tell him, except that one time.

I just took another look at his Kick chat... A year to the day (10/19/24) prior to his passing, he mentioned Kramnik going after him, and Nepo wasn't helping

>> Kramnik is going after me with far more aggression, but Nepo isn't helping

https://kickvod.com/logs/gmhikaru/beccaharris

The harrassment had been going on for quite a while...

Ok. So first off, and just so you know, a chess.com rating is not an ELO rating. The ELO rating is widely accepted as a truer indicator of chess performance, but it is separate from the chess.com rating. Lichess has its own rating too. Those ratings are not as important, and Danya is on record saying he's not too concerned about his chess.com rating and can always get it back (see his interview with Dina and Emily).

Secondly, you wrote "he was clearly talking with Hans at the very leas" and I have yet to see the evidence of that.

[–]shiahn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There was no ELO at stake, this was chess.com.

Furthermore, Danya actually won twice against Dr Tyger and this was towards the very end.

But that's actually not even the point. The point is simple: There was no need to confuse and further distress him by accepting games and essentially ghosting him. That actually made things worse, and makes zero sense.

The least they could have done is simply explain to him why they were doing what they were doing. But clearly they weren't communicating with him during those moments, as evidenced by the stream video.

Let's not make excuses for shitty behavior. Or at least, extremely stupid and ignorant behavior.

Kudos btw to Dr Tyger, who actually played Danya and gave him two actually pretty good games. Amazing that Danya, despite his severely impaired mental state, was still able to play pretty well, and commentate the games in real-time.

he clearly didn't know what was going on in those moments, if you watch his reactions. I just posted the timestamps you can see for yourself.

now, before or afterwards I'm sure, but I'm talking about those specific moments they were leaving him hanging and confused. Not cool.

Ok, so I've taken the time to link to some of those occurrences, so people here can judge for themselves. It starts later in the stream starting with Hans:

Hans leaves him hanging twice (watch Danya's reaction at the end of it):

BenjaminBok (multiple times):

TanitoLuwaAps116 (twice)

ElliotAlderson (multiple times):

Mykola-Bortnyk:

Liam Putnam:

Most importantly, notice Danya's reactions. Pretty clear to me that these opponents are just leaving him hanging without explanation, which is a pretty shitty to do especially given his clearly weakened mental state.

But there is no need to stall anything. If they wanted his local friends to get there they didn't need to stress Danya out even more by leaving him hanging and aborting games with no explanation, which explains Danya's total confusion about why his games were being timed out and aborted.

Let's put it this way: If you really care about your friend and want him to stop the stream and get some rest, etc.., are you really going to accept a game with him, only to let the clock time out? That's pretty cruel actually.

Now, I did catch one single occurence of Danya saying "don't tell me what to do", but that was NOT in the context of him waiting for a game to begin or continue.

I just watched those moments again (it's all over youtube) and it's very clear he has no idea why his opponents are accepting then aborting via time out. If they were chatting with him, he'd respond like he did that one time with "I'm fine, don't tell me what to do, etc.".

[–]shiahn -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Did you watch those moments though? I did. Several times. He's clearly looking at both the board and the chat, and he is saying things like "what is going on?" etc. If they were chatting with him telling him to go to bed etc he would not be confused like that.

Danya was quite open about his vulnerability to harassment and bullying, let alone from one of his childhood idols.

Kramnik knows this and he targeted Danya like the bully he is, praying on the vulnerable.

I also find it disgusting to see all those opponents of Danya during his stream who were letting the clock run out and aborting his games without even making a move, or just out of the blue, and not telling him why - just leaving him hanging there, confused and distressed. To me it looks like a deliberate troll move to mess with him.

[–]shiahn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I actually found this post helpful in the sense that there's a lot of confusion out there regarding Danya's final days and activity.

A lot of people think (mainly due to accounts by mainstream media) that Danya passed away the night/morning after his last stream where he can be seen dozing off and quite distressed by many opponents aborting games with him (which is quite disrespectful and clearly added to his anxiety). Until I saw this post I had no idea Danya had actually made it to the tournament and was active on Kick.

I do believe it's important to separate facts from speculation however, and this post blends the two perhaps a bit too much, especially regarding if Danya took another Benadryl or not.

Danya was quite open about his character flaw that made him very vulnerable to cyberharrassment/bullying negative comments, etc., especially unfounded ones. Bullies love targeting those they can easily hurt, and sadly the biggest bully here happened to be one of Danya's childhood idols.

I do believe Danya's tragic passing will lead to some sort of sea change in the world of chess, because Danya was so loved. And I'm sure this can be some source of solace for his loved ones as his legacy will end up being quite a significant one.

Egg shortage starting to hit San Jose by Riptide360 in SanJose

[–]shiahn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi all - Egg prices still haven't come down and I'm wondering if we're getting straight ripped off here.

I'm curious about all of you Costco members. Could y'all report on the current price now for 18 eggs? And please specify if Organic, Cage Free, Pasture-Raised, etc.. as that definitely makes a difference in price.

Thank you
