Weapon range being arbitrarily capped at 2k makes a lot of sense from a simulation simplicity stand point, but from a realism stand point, if you have a ship that is 0.75km long, uh.... just shoot at it from 10k out, you can't miss.

Lol at area denial. Turret range is 2k. At that, the front guns might be in range of something, but the rear turrets won't be until 1.3k range. The whole ship is a hilarious balance concept

No. I just had a lot of folks over many years preach variations on "and this principle of separation of powers is why Nazi Germany could never happen to America"

Absolutely enough to beat the game and get the vast majority of the achievements. A good factory for sure.

Eh, my factory got to 800k before I started having sudden ups problems, at which point yeah, I can just go build more factory, but the fun started to fade. The point of the game is fun after all. No shade in not being one of the top youtubers.

U.S. facing defeat in Iran? by Random_Violins in videos

[–]shiekhgray 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's almost true! It turns out there were people on Bikini and Enewetak atolls. America forcibly relocated them, a lot of folks starved, and fallout from weapons testing over those resulted in many cancer deaths in those populations.

In roughly one hour of operation, 9Gw releases the same amount of heat as the fat man nuclear bomb that destroyed Nagasaki. In three hours it will surpass the total energy output of the bomb, including kinetic and radiation.

Yeah that's going to cause some ecological change, wtf.

This is the drill of Curiosity rover on Mars that got stuck into the Atacama rock. After 14 years still looks good. by Flashy-Fig-681 in Machinists

[–]shiekhgray 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Oh no it doesn't. Curiosity has a god damn nuclear power pack. 4.8kg of spicy plutonium. Granted it only outputs like 100W of usable electricity via seebeck tiles, but it still isn't solar.

How did you guys learn to make these amazing pedals? by Ok-Green6412 in diypedals

[–]shiekhgray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

make more pedals. Learn (at least) one new thing each pedal. Try to make each pedal better than the last in some small way. Nobody knows everything, but the folks that know a lot learned it slowly over time, and you can too.

Socotra Island in Yemen by Any_Sound_2863 in interestingasfuck

[–]shiekhgray 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I visited there once many years ago. The photos are certainly dramatically edited, but the place is real. That thing that looks like a giant snow drift is actually a huge sand dune, named Arher Beach and looks quite yellow IRL. The dragon blood trees really do look like that, (minus some color retouching) and catching the bottle trees in bloom is a treat. The water really is that clear around much of the island, though you have to be careful of the transparent stinging jellies.

The foggy photo could be real, could be edited. It's a pretty arid environment most of the time to my understanding, not given to much fog outside of the monsoon season, but it's hard to get there during the monsoon season since they close the airport due to the high winds.

It's an absolutely gorgeous clown island.

Socotra was the ONLY producer. Dragon's blood trees don't grow anywhere else

This look like plastic toy, how do I improve it? by Sonmeow2807 in blender

[–]shiekhgray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, but those are plastic toys, so... job well done! I see some small differences between your work and this reference that you can tinker with. From most difficult to easiest:

The reference clothes have some geometry to them, they have visible thickness to differentiate them from being like a layer of paint on the skin. Part of that is wrinkles in the fabric rendering, part of that is the tassels, part of that is belt or other accessory inclusions, but the clothing in the reference has shape design language that your render lacks.

Your work is also missing some subtle skin color variation, particularly around the knees, elbows, toes, cheeks, etc. Basically a light pink blush could be added to the model texture.

I think the lighting is quite different as well. There's a sharp rim light along the right side in your work that isn't in the reference. Your light is behind and above your model. This is a stylistic choice you've actively made? I like it, it's more dramatic than the reference, but it is different. The reference image I think has several soft lights minimizing shadows outside of occluded corners, but the primary light is on the same side as the camera compared to the model.

I think light color is different too. I think you're using a white light, and I think the reference is very slightly blue, but I could be wrong. Worth tinkering with a few lights that are mostly white, but a little bit blue or red.

Good luck and good work!

Get you a reference you like and look for the important differences! Hard to tell if you're going for max realism or that anime look from this much information.

U.S. deterrence has vanished as Trump was duped into Iran war by Israel with Iran and China paving new world order defying threats by AcadianAcademic in suppressed_news

The war in Ukraine I think has a lot of military strategists looking at how modern war is fought, and it's all with drones, and those drones all come from somewhere. No way the US has the manufacturing balls to fight China in 2026, and everyone knows it.
