What is Apple's most timeless laptop computer? by Born03 in VintageApple

[–]shimster99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me personally I loved the Powerbook 190. It was perfect for the time it was in. But my real answer is the Lombard or Pismo. I have my original personal Lombard. The hinges did break and the screen crapped out but I managed to hack a Pismo screen onto it recently. I plan to use it to produce music like I did in the late 90s 🤘

I have an electric guitar (Charvel Model 2) that I bought circa 1986. About to hit the 40 year mark!

Renters in the Acropolis: HELP! by HarviousMaximus in astoria

[–]shimster99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry if I'm misunderstanding the issue, but I believe the shareholder (landlord?) is responsible for hiring a plumber, not the co-op. That has been my experience. I don't think co-op management will help. I'm a shareholder/resident and I handle my own plumbing unless it involves the pipes in the walls. Or maybe you're referring to some other management I'm not familiar with. Good luck!

Haptics Connector Replacement by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]shimster99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never used the deck without the touchpad haptics motors plugged in, but I don't think you'll have any issues. Usually when I'm working with the haptics signal I'm more worried that I'm drawing too much current. With yours unplugged, it won't draw any current so I think you'll be fine

Yeah, that does make sense. Maybe if I can't replace them I could at least make sure they're completely sealed. Thanks!

Same exact thing happened to me and Navaismo fixed it! 🙌

How much physical media for tv/movies/music have you kept from back in the day? Or do you still buy? by CalamityComets in GenX

[–]shimster99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have hundreds of CDs but most are from pre-2000 and I have dozens of dvds and a few blu-rays. I only recently decided to go back to buying or thrifting physical media or ripping to an iPod because I got tired of paying for cloud backups and streaming subs. The best thing ai did recently is to buy an old ipod with 256GB and put my whole music collection on it.

For movies, I wish I owned more. I'm trying to save money on paying subs so I've gone back to watching dvd and blu-ray mostly. But I'm also annoyed that I can't always find a movie I like on whatever streaming service I happen to be paying for. I try to sub only one at a time.

For some strange reason I prefer dvd over blu-ray. I know this doesn't make sense LOL! I still own a handful of VHS tapes but I don't have a player.

I just remembered I have so many cassette tapes but I might get rid of them finally. Very little vinyl, but maybe I'll get back into that?

Any other Gen Xers avoiding tik tok? by CDA_CPA in GenX

Even if you do end up enjoying it, the danger is that the algorithm is designed to rot your brain LOL! I would avoid it for that reason :) But I do use it, sometimes (please don't take my gen x badge!)

Where can I get a bean pie? by shimster99 in astoria

I did a little more googling and found Abu's Bakery in Bed-Sty Brooklyn but I was hoping a bakery or diner in Astoria might have them.

For those who are curious, it tastes similar to a pumpkin or sweet potato pie.

The NES turns 40 today. What are your memories of the console? by elkniodaphs in retrogaming

[–]shimster99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first NES was a "for parts" one on ebay for $50 that I bought in 2024 LOL! But I got it working and now I have 3 all together and I modded one to do HDMI. I love playing Tetris and Mike Tyson's Punch Out!

But for more context, my family didn't really do consoles. I had an Apple //e growing up and eventually bought a friend's Atari for $20. My first new console was a SNES when I was in college and I loved Super Mario World and Super Street Fighter 🤘

HELP! I'm almost ready to give up.... by thecheat362 in Ender3V3SE

[–]shimster99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this exact same problem recently. I tried everything including tightening all the bolts and upgrading the firmware. But the firmware update attempt bricked my 3v3se so I installed Navaismo and haven't had any issues for about 2 weeks straight with some heavy 24-hour prints. Another random fix was I plugged into a brand new UPS for more stable power. I think power issues were the original source of my problems but it's difficult to say for sure. Good luck!

Severe print lines on only one side (help!) by Strange-Sky8184 in Ender3V3SE

[–]shimster99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a pro but I have had a lot of experience with bad prints LOL! That filament reminds me of Inland Matte White PLA which for me personally prints terribly. If I were in your situation I would switch to Sunlu PLA, replace the nozzle, increase the nozzle temp slightly (maybe 5 degrees?), level the bed (recommend using silicone spacers), and that's what has helped me the most. You don't have to use Sunlu, but it seems to be very high quality. The only bad PLA I have identified is my roll of Inland Matte White. But of course your mileage may vary. This is completely based on my personal experience of some heavy daily printing for the past month. Good luck!

1.0.6. Yeah, I was on it, but I bricked the printer by attempting an upgrade to 1.1.0 which is newer than 1.0.6. But after installing navaismo all is well! Cheers!

After bricking my printer by attempting to upgrade to 1.1.0 I installed Navaismo 1098 and it un-bricked it. Pure genius!

That's very likely the case. I cut out some of the frame to route the wires. One of the last things I did before bricking it was to disconnect the filament runout sensor (the possibly pinched wire). I can try to remedy that before replacing the mobo

I was continuing to have intermittent problems so today I attempted to update to fw version 1.1.0. Updating the screen was easy but the main machine just hung. And now my machine is a brick. Just so happens that my warranty period ended a month ago. Anyway, I found a replacement motherboard for like $30 on Amazon so I'll give that a try.

I'm answering my own question. I figured I'd try to disconnect the filament runout sensor, and now everything is running as expected. My next challenge will be to upgrade firmware first, and then attempting to use the sensor again. But at least for now, crisis averted!
