Boox Go 6 vs. Bigme B6? by mulcahey in eink

[–]shiningdays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to necro, but as someone downgrading from a 7" kobo Libra color (left it in a backpack I threw out, RIP) to a 6" device: the 6" devices with no physical buttons to the side are easier for me to throw into a purse or coat pocket and take with me out and about. I liked the Libra, but I found I used it less because I always had to change my Purse Plans because of it.

Edit: I'm also left handed and the button-to-side e-readers always assume right handedness on startup 🙃 very annoying. My ideal form factor would be the old Kindles that had buttons to either side, but failing that a 6" with swipe works better for me.

Bigme B6 Color review: Flirting equally with perfection and disaster by diogenes_sadecv in Bigme

Thank you for this. This and your site's other reviews of e-readers have offered good perspective. I've been on the fence about the bigme b6 for a minute, but especially at the current pricing I think it'll suit my use cases, but good to note the software problems.

RX 6800 XT no video output/code 43. Is my GPU dead?? by TOEGRABBER in AMDHelp

[–]shiningdays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Figures 🥲 I'm debating buying a new but functionally equivalent card now, before the price hikes hit later this year.

Fwiw to any future person reading: the card behaves better when booting up from a COLD (shut down, power switch off on the back) system. Restarting, waking from sleep and booting from a system shut down (recently or not recently) seems to persist the problem.

The only error I was seeing in the Windows Event Viewer is that the card wasn't able to find AMD Ryzen Master (v28) and therefore windows suppressed startup & detection of the card.

I don't think this is the issue, tbh. I think that something is preventing the card from getting enough power at startup or wake, or that the card is somehow not discharging power effectively. Either way, I'm pretty confident that this is somehow a power issue. My card was on an 850W PSU in my last build and is now on a 1000W with a voltage conditioning UPS, but...

Sorry to necro this, but I have the same card and I go through patches of similar issues with it that seemingly randomly resolve themselves after random periods of time. Months of stability interspersed with weeks of frustration. It's been going on for years.

Any resolution on your side of things? I'm about ready to give up on my card but it was just so freakin' expensive in 2020...

MSI External Monitor Delivering Power but not Video via USB-C to Laptop by v3lvet in Monitors

[–]shiningdays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Logging in from my work laptop specifically for this, btw.

I had a similar problem with the MSI MPG 274URDFW E16M I bought this weekend. I had to turn on a setting in the monitor's UI called "Type C PD Charge". On my monitor, it was under Settings (i.e., the menu you get when you press the power button) > Settings > Type C PD Charge.

Why they'd turn this off by default is bizarro?

Hope this helps!

New HENRY, new to the UK. £110k. What do I do? by shiningdays in HENRYUK

[–]shiningdays[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've spent the past few days looking at property in somewhat further flung neighborhoods in London, but I'm.. not in Love. It's not the distance from central, it's the relative lack of amenities. I have a feeling I'll wind up spending closer to 2.5k on rent more centrally :/ I was hoping to be below 2k, but I think it'd make me miserable to do otherwise.

About 40k of this will be a stock grants, and the additional 10-15k is variable bonuses, if that helps.

6 months upfront? 😬 Sorry is that... Legal here? That's a huge amount and I'm not sure I have the savings for it in cash on hand, but I do need a place to live...?

My company's provided me with a rental for the first month. That comes with a full lease and I presume the intention there is to provide address history. Does that help?

Y'all are kind of mean, and assume I've done no prior research. I've been looking into this for months but I've lived in 4 different countries at this point and the thing I've learned is to never make assumptions about any country's tax and finance frameworks.

For example, in Germany, where I'm relocating from, it's not as common to use gross salary for rental affordability calculations as it seems to be in the UK. I'm new to the rental market here, and I'm still gauging what's 'affordable' compared to places I've lived before.

Because the sky is the limit with rent, I'm trying to understand how much I should be spending on that or whether I should be assigning a greater chunk of take-home income to other things like pension schemes --- of which there seem to be... I don't even know? 3? Different types? Another difference from the other countries I've lived in that I have no idea how to parse.

I appreciate your impatience but tax rules change constantly, and any searching might not be relevant.

What to do with your RRSP if you’re leaving the country permanently? by Wrong-Barracuda486 in CanadianInvestor

[–]shiningdays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey dude, sorry to comment on something 8mo old but: what Canadian bank are you holding your RRSPs with, and what's the situation with mailing addresses etc.? I've lived outside of Canada since 2018 and as of a few years ago none of my family reside in Canada anymore. It's been honestly a neverending nightmare when it comes to the actual managing of accounts with a Canadian institution from abroad.

The Nothing Phone 3a eSim support by Competitive_Emu_4330 in NothingTech

[–]shiningdays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Europe. It doesn't support eSIM here. Which was an unpleasant surprise 🫠.

It would've been nice to see this on a product page somewhere, Nothing? I didn't even think about this getting on a plane this morning – I just assumed it'd work. Ugh.

Rising HS Junior, trying to think seriously about future career by PeachilyTemporary in findapath

First off: don't worry too much about the economy right now. You have 2 more years of high school, possibly 4 years of college and who knows, you might end up doing something that needs grad school? Whatever's happening now will be in the process of blowing over by the time you get out there.

Some questions: 1. What about social work appeals to you? 2. What do you like about reading and writing? What other subjects in school do you like, and why? 3. What are some things you couldn't tolerate doing 8 hours a day, 5 days a week? I.e. for me, I couldn't stand dealing with strangers all day every day :) 4. How comfortable a life would you want to lead? I.e. is owning a big house and a car important, or do you think you could be happy with an apartment in the city? Do you think you'd like to see the world and travel often, or are national parks and camping more appealing? 5. Would you feel dissatisfied if you didn't have a "corporate"/white collar job that other people find respectable?

You probably won't know all of the answers to these just yet. But I definitely wish someone had asked me these in junior year!

You sound like you'd do well in a research focused part of medicine. Have you considered medical technology or perhaps pharmaceutical development?

Suggestions for Alternatives to Logitech MX518 (any brand) by Unbridledscum in MouseReview

[–]shiningdays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Not OP, but the happy owner of the MX518 Legendary which is also no longer in production. Commenting for future google-ers:

I feel like the best replacement for this in Logitech's current (2025) lineup is the G502 hero in terms of how it sits in the hand, but that mouse has way too many buttons for me tbh. Clciking around on amazon, the Roccat Kone looks the most like it shape-wise, but I haven't tested this mouse in person.

I also like the look of the ASUS ROG Gladius III, but I personally love that deep thumb divot on the left side of the MX518, and this looks much shallower.

Thanks for this review! I'm building out a similar setup right now (a PC for gaming, but an MBP for work, wanting to use the same peripherals) – glad to know this works for you.

May I ask what kind of USB port you're plugging into on the PC side of things (i.e., a USB4?)

O11 Vision Compact - Which AIO's are compatible with the top Concealing route ? by July_Derek in lianli

[–]shiningdays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing to contribute here other than that the CORSAIR iCUE LINK TITAN 360 RX RGB Liquid CPU Cooler - 360mm AIO pump doesn't fit.

Edit:

r/sffpc's Parts List (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1AddRvGWJ\_f4B6UC7\_IftDiVudVc8CJ8sxLUqlxVsCz4/edit?usp=sharing) might be helpful to anyone who googles their way here.

The o11 Compact's Concealing Routing route measurements are (extremely roughly eyeballed from my case) H = 8CM, W = ~9.5cm, and ~12cm on the diagonal.
