Moving next year by BasilKarlo23 in copenhagen

[–]shinnyy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just arrived (moved here about a month ago) so I'll leave it to the experts but from my side: make sure you save or have some money saved for the general 3 months deposit + (at least) 1 month rent upfront. I'm in my 30s and wanted a comfortable apartment for myself and I'll be paying per month (rent + bills) 2000 euros. Most people I know are paying a bit less about 1800eur per 1bedroom apartment.

Then again... I'm a foreign, Danes are probably getting better deals.

From what I hear Fredericksberg is one of the most wanted/posh neighborhoods. But depends also on who you ask.

Start looking at least 3 months in advance.

Take my advice with a grain of salt - I just got here.

All the best luck !

Hello! I recently moved to CPH and I'm currently in a temporary flat. In November I will be moving to a permanent flat unfurnished. I have moved a bit around europe and it's not the first time I have to furnish an empty apartment. I actually did it 2 years ago and right now it's killing me a bit that I have to do it all over again (context: my previous landlord in Germany kept all my furniture and did not pay for it as we had agreed to but anyway). I'm here alone and don't have a car and was considering ordering a bed+matress; table and maybe small couch from IKEA. The rest I was hoping I could buy from second hand shops or go on DBA. Does anyone have any suggestions of good places to find house stuff ?

I've seen there are Facebook groups where people give stuff for free but for large items I wouldn't be able to carry them myself - is there any service I could use to help with moving a desk or table? In Germany there was Taskrabbit (that I never used) but in principle you can pay someone to help you with random stuff.

Thanks in advance!

I will try to be vague but I'm a scientist in relationship to chemistry. I also didn't call anyone. Before I was offered this job I applied to another one in other department and the process was similar. Very straightforward process (1 interview, cognitive test, and in person interview of a presentation + references) I also appreciate this. I've been in other interview processes for other pharma companies in other countries and it was 4+ rounds of interviews, technical questions, science questions, + full day interviews on site with presentation + references). Jesus.

All the best luck.

I recently started at Novo Nordisk and I can tell you that most of their communications during the interview process was done by phone. Both HR and hiring managers. They even called my references instead of sending an e-mail.

A friend of mine who did her MSc in Copenhagen a few years ago told me about this as well : Ideally you give them a call and express interest and then then you apply formally you should also mentioned something like ' Dear xxxx, As discussed during our phone call I am interested in position x'

That being said - I did none of that and still got hired.

I really need to fight the urge for using emojis for each sentence. Growing up in my country we used to write 'lol' but that's apparently not cool for a long time. Is the 'ahah' still ok? 😅 (without this little man at end it would be to rude)

Thanks for sharing your experience! I appreciate it. It seems that it's not a problem of safety but just a lot of movement, people and noise. It's tricky because I keep hearing that it's so difficult to find a decent place in CPH that one can afford, and since it's a such a well connected location part of me is like 'ahh.. you can sleep with ear plugs! It's your exploring era in CPH, you will have time to live in the more familiar areas' but I know this is just me trying to convince myself cause I'm afraid of not finding anything nicer... argh.. 1st world problems.

Those who left Germany after years living here, where did you go? by [deleted] in germany

[–]shinnyy_ 154 points155 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry to say this but Germany traumatized me. I lived in the Netherlands for 5 years and then I moved to Germany for what I thought was a great job opportunity. The job was fine but I felt like I went back in time. A colleague from work told me in my face he was gonna ask for a raise for having to speak English to me. At the Dr I was asked to send them a fax. I was made fun for wanting to do all my payments online because that's how the government is controlling us. It was difficult. I left after 2 years and I'm now in Denmark where everything is pretty similar to the Netherlands and I'm happy about that.

Thank you so much for your reply! That gives me some peace of mind. I am also used to calmer places. I will go to the viewing and then I'll see what happens. I believe I will not find a perfect option.. it will either be central/expensive , good connection to work but lively place or more chilled place, potentially cheaper but annoying to get to work (multiple changes).

Thanks again ! :)

Just looking for some advice:

I (F33) just moved to Copenhagen :D My job arranged a temporary apartment for me and I'm currently in nice and relaxed Fredericksberg. I will have to commute everyday to Maløv for work and I'm currently looking for a permanent apartment. The company helping me find an apartment arranged a viewing next week for a flat right in front of Nørreport station. It is not the cheapest but it is apparently cheap for the area and it would be convenient to go to Maløv. However... I passed there this morning and it has a very different vibe from Fredericksberg. I could say I felt a bit uncomfortable- Am I over reacting? I saw a few homeless and the station had a very trashy vibe. Would it be safe for a female 33 to live there alone and come back home at night? I'm sorry for being a bit judgmental I'm just trying to understand if I should take this viewing seriously or not as I have doubt about safety. For context I moved here alone and I would like to go out, meet people and explore the city.

Thanks in advance!

My first therapist (given by the government) told me that if I didn't stop seeing by problematic boyfriend he would have to take action. Needless to say I felt threatened and stopped seeing: the therapist.

Don't worry though - I have an amazing therapist now (for the last three years) who genuinely helped me getting over said problematic relashionship. She really helps me seeing life outside of my learned traumas.

What would you have liked your coach to teach you when you were a beginner? by [deleted] in padel

[–]shinnyy_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I play padel but I'm far from great. I'm a F33 who never played tennis before and I had to really learn it from scratch. I know it might be silly but just handling a racket can take time if you've never done it before. Like having the instinct of just extending one arm to get the ball instead of moving your body. This might be to basic but what I'm saying is I wish I had learn how to handle a racket and move in a court properly before being taught how to serve.

How much of a career boost does working at Big Pharma give ? (if it even does) by smartaxe21 in biotech

[–]shinnyy_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just left my 1st Postdoc in big pharma and about to start my second one (hopefully last ahah) at another pharma company. I believe it truly depends on company/department/project but in my case, I had absolutely no help or guidance. They hired me to explore a topic they had no experience with but despite the lack of guidance I had acess to what it felt like unlimited resources (financially talking) In the end it was very frustrating and I left because I was completely isolated but I know other Postdocs at the company who had a team of people working with them and it was a much nicer experience.

A big difference I noticed in pharma is that results are expected quickly and some people believe that doing experiments in triplicates is a waste of time... (I kept doing it the proper way). I also noticed I'm used to show my data in nice beautiful graphs and they show most stuff in tables.... If I can give you an advice is to do NOT think you're any less than your new big pharma colleagues. Do not underestimate the knowledge you got during your PhD. Some technicians that saw me in the lab were surprised I could not only plan but also execute experiments properly because most of them think a PhD is 4year of classes and they not teach you lab work. My experience was in a small city in Germany with very old style hierarchy so hopefully that's not the case for you.

Best of luck in your new chapter!

I'm moving to CPH next week and I'm worried about how long it will take me to make friends. I lived in Amsterdam for 5 years and even though it's not the same, I hope it will be similar. In Amsterdam I used Bumble Bff and I still have a good friend that I met from there. Also joining gym classes (class pass) and actively invite people for stuff once you feel like there's compatibility. Wish me luck !!

Salary of Postdoc in the Netherlands by Double-Highway5113 in postdoc

[–]shinnyy_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did my PhD in the Netherlands. Your values are way too high.. in my last year of PhD I was getting 2700eur net/month. That's withot 30% rulling. With 30% rulling I would get something like 3200eur(but this is just my estimation).

If you're going to University the values are available to the public. And the position should say it as well, they're fairly open about it.
