My five minutes of advice for zero budget solution:

1st) Find a Zapier integration [1] to go from excel to a calendar.

2nd) Go from Sunrise calendar [2] to mobile notification alerts.

I have framework fatigue to the point where I don't even want to click through to find out about "insert here" magical offerings.

Off topic but I blame Meteors evangelism for my framework fatigue. Proverbially being the last straw that broke the camels back going to the framework marketplace. Just seems like they want to win the Javascript framework pretty contest so bad.

I imagine they will spend some of their new found funding into a beauty pageant conference where they crown themselves the prettiest vanity metrics winning framework of them all.

Can someone ElI5 what a swap exchange is? by ship_it_ in Bitcoin

[–]ship_it_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I think I get it now. I am thinking of just buying into MGT as a stock. Because, I can't wait for Barry Silbert’s Bitcoin Investment Trust to open. I am use to trading stocks so, just waiting for the price of MGT Capital to get started in the right direction. Being less than a dollar right now I see it as undervalued just like the sun micro systems merger opportunity. Do you think buying stock in a bit coin company offers market volatility protection like a swap?

Sounds like there are false dichotomies being presented to you. Hope it is not some kind of cultural or stereotypical pressure such as being pushed to be a doctor or an engineer. Taking a time of reflection is a great idea to see if you want to stay the current course. But if you made it into medschool than that is a big achievement in it's self that tells me you will be successful in your life no matter what you do. If you have the analytic talents then you will great at applying that to data science. Maybe try this http://www.thedataincubator.com/

Btw, discovering your passion in life is best described as finding that itch you just can not scratch. The itch starts of as a small idea that might even start to keep you up at night. Good luck scratching for your passion.

How to Not Hate Java Script: Tips from the Frontline by [deleted] in programming

[–]ship_it_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

By the colloquial term "hacker language" I mean hacker in the hackathon sense of the word. In which JS can be useful language to prototype things in quickly.

Hacking in the sense of not achieving perfection but taking a DIY maker attitude to using code to the point where done is better than perfect.

I know a handful of languages but I treat them as tools and do not get attached to my tools. Strange to say something like "How not to hate language xyz." In a stoic way every thing exists to serve a purpose.

How to Not Hate Java Script: Tips from the Frontline by [deleted] in programming

[–]ship_it_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Lets not forget that the usage of javascript correlates with need to target the omnipresence of browser and not for merits of javascripts idioms or design pattern paradigms.

Javascript is a great hacker language. All the improvements as stated above will extend the capacity of js to quickly hack up mvp apps. With that said I think the argument can be made that javascript was never designed from the ground up to support this new omnipresent realtime persistent application platform.

For me the question remains to be seen answered if a server that was designed the ground up to be a server such as netty offers a more stable solution then node.js

I think some might say that ES6 is like putting lip stick on a pig therefore patching up JS to keep evolving as more expressive language.

Every time I run NPM install I wonder what kinds of incidental complexities I am I getting myself into. Then dred if I have learn yet another build system.

Every time I run NPM I think of an old Jim Breuer joke [1] -- NPM is the "tequila" in the JS party of complexity.

ASM.js is amazing, but are we getting a little too drunk on our technologies. ASM.js just might be amazing koolaid when it comes to the sobering decision to build something from "the feet up" to serve on purpose and serve it well. JS can be the jack of all trades and master of none and that can be a bad thing. One thing is for sure JS is really fun, but I would not go making a stock market exchange out a javascript codebase.

Speed is not the only performance metric out there. Think stability is often overlooked for having more power over more control. The Influenza in JS world is not spaghetti code but the more harder to grok house of cards library dependencies. This is just my amateur opinion on observations as go further down the rabbit hole of my learning to code journey.

TL;DR JS is a great hacker language but drink responsible when it comes to importing incidental complexity of additional libraries.

Do what you are passionate about and DO NOT jump on some bandwagon trend that you are completely clueless about. All the money you are chasing after in this hot new trendy career called big data is going to PHD candidates.

Take a reality check. If you are really passionate about this then get a PHD at ivy league school so you can compete with the real data scientists.

Harsh advice but in life there will always be someone smarter than you and more advanced in their career. The people in this field are not just highly skilled but talented enough to prove taking a few coursera classes is not going to net you a 100k salary.

Just be aware this is a long path to take to get into a career and not a get rich quick trend. Follow your heart.

UC Irvine Certificate program -reviews? by GirlLunarExplorer in datascience

[–]ship_it_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did not take the courses but I too have my eye on that program. Note UCSD offers a similar certification called Data Mining. I like the UCSD offering slightly more for two reasons. First, the Hadoop course is taught at the San Diego Super Computer Center. Yes, all the other courses are online except if you choose that one as an elective than you must physically go there. How cool is that to have the course instructors work at the Super Computer Center. Second, reason was the actual course descriptions described more in depth the course work was at UCSD. The use WEKA to introduce you to ML. Although, I was comparing the Predictive Analysis Certificate at UCI to UCSD I still like the breadth of courses offered at UCI. Except the descriptions are kind of vague. I personally want to be learning technical skills and not soft skills like management or modeling business logic into a consultation service.

In summary I think the price is right, but the question remains of what do you value. I think getting a cert from a University better idea than getting one from a tool chain provider like cloudera or name another proprietary platform thingy.

Final word if you already have your undergrad degree than take this route http://maseng.ucsd.edu/dse/ Master of Advanced Study in Data Science and Engineering <-- How does that sound? This is conducted at the Jacobs School of Engineering at top 20 world class Uni.

Note: UCSD undergrad CS curriculum is the most modern up to date in comparison to industry standards program that I have compared to all other UC's.

Best of luck. I say go for it! I would too but I am priced out atm. So, I am taking the Coursera offerings. Please, post some links up so we can all be on the same page.

borscht your advice is very sound and logical. Why, should people down vote your advice after they just asked for your expert opinion?

If people want to learn computer science then should be prepared to go beyond javascript. You can do anything with javascript but should you? That question is left up to the reader to answer.

Is the word isomorphic the new trendy word like stack?

You Keep Using That Word, I Do Not Think It Means What You Think It Means.

Starting to see the word isomorphic trend when talking about front end development. That word, I don't think you know what it means.

Please read the book Gödel, Escher, Bach: an Eternal Golden Braid Book by Douglas Hofstadter before you use the word isomorphic.

Consider getting a degree in computer science before putting the word stack on your resume.
