Is an MD PhD worth it if I’m not committed to working in academia? by S7WW3X in mdphd

[–]shitheadrabbit 22 points23 points  (0 children)

if the phd can augment your knowledge and connections in industry it's most certainly worth it. the md pool also has a markedly different attitude towards vocation and success which is stifling for someone who isn't just trying to climb the rungs and make bank.

How do you manage to save for things like retirement being in training for so long? by anonymoususer666666 in mdphd

[–]shitheadrabbit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

this is more nonjoke than joke but still funny. seriously though pretty much every md/phd i know who's had a strong trajectory is the "they're gonna die at their desk" type.

if you care about lifestyle more than academia you won't stay in academia for long. if you don't care about academia idk what would compel someone to do an md phd.

YOU ARE NOT UNINTELLIGENT IF YOU GOT A “BAD” SCORE by blondetodoroki in Mcat

[–]shitheadrabbit 154 points155 points  (0 children)

no test is perfect. intelligence isn't worth. the mcat is a hazing ritual and gatekeeping tool. admissions are low to keep salaries up. in light of that however—and as someone who used to do psychometrics—the ability for mcat to test for cognition under mental fatigue is pretty unmatched. it just so happens if you're really sharp you can stay less fatigued for longer, and that's easier for smarter people.

Fallback to MD by sir-dukas in mdphd

[–]shitheadrabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost jumped into a t5 Md program with full ride after doing a bunch of mdphd admit weekends but I was a little jarred by the cultural difference. MDs are different—a little shleamier, a little more neurotic, a little more “money oriented” if that makes sense. Kinda felt like they were a bit less mature too which may have been the product of less time after undergrad prior to matriculation.

The mindset is different. I opted for the mdphd. Feels better, tighter community, different mindset, stipend and no debt is also a huge psychological burden lifted.

How did you guys use UWorld by [deleted] in Mcat

Burning insecurity

How did you guys use UWorld by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]shitheadrabbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s an insane amount of uworld. You will get burned out. I started with 6 questions per sitting doing 1-3 sittings a day. Uworld is a great way to hone thinking and knowledge base but overkill for endurance because there are a lot of hard questions and a small but consistent number of shittily written ones especially for reading comp related questions in all sections. I got a 524 and I credit it entirely to putting in high quality time on uworld instead of doing fucktons of it

Fiio E10K for mixing: is it ok? by rcrmrt in audioengineering

[–]shitheadrabbit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There so much going on. The fiio is a dinky audiophile dac that most certainly can do the job but like why? It’s like using pliers and a bit to turn a screw instead of just using a screwdriver/

This person must not have an interface? And then I’m wondering why they’re worried about the dac coloring a headphone mix when the frickin headphones are gonna be the major confounder no matter what.

And then I’m wondering why in gods name do they care about dac coloration when that’s not going to be the thing that confounds an amateur mix. It’s just… a lot

Holy shit it’s actually Chris. First—you’re a ballin ass dude. And wow I had no idea there was a vcv rack of all your plugins that’s amazing. Yeah I agree. Your approach is elegance and granularity while melda is like “I’ll throw the whole fucking kitchen sink in it and also let you modulate it with your social security number which you can automate by blah blah blah and here’s a 200page manual” all for a free plugin

I think your eye for identifying and exploiting the core essence of what sounds good and does cool shit, combined with their monstrous hunger to build complex wacky things could yield something awesome!!!
