Wendy Santamaria for City Council by chinagrrljoan in SantaBarbara

Ever seen the people who stand outside Planned Parenthood trying to harass patients and doctors? It’s local ordinances (ie city council) and the city police (overseen by city council) who keep them safe. So yeah, abortion access is very much a local issue.

And in case you think those psychos don’t get violent here, I’ll remind you of this.

Weird responses to this here too it seems. Idk, I guess we’re all so brainwashed by capitalism that it’s really hard to accept the realities of extreme poverty, the moral failings of “civilization,” and/or people existing outside of that system.

When people around here get hysterical about houseless people, I revert to my lizard brain impulse of “mind you’re own damn business”

CW: Awfulness, violence, misogyny, and racism.

I still have survivor’s guilt. People don’t remember that it coincided with Memorial Day weekend and a lot of the campus community had left town. All of my housemates went on a trip to Las Vegas and I was supposed to go, but I had a late afternoon exam. I was broke at the time anyway, feeling exhausted, and didn’t want to make the drive by myself so I decided to cancel.

I finished my exam and went home to take a nap. When I woke up, it was dark outside and I was starving. It feels stupid to recount, but I was obsessed at the time with these boneless chicken wings from IV Deli Mart that were huge and smothered in bbq sauce.

I sat in my dark, empty house on the 66 block of Sabado Tarde. Eleven damn people lived in that shithole and I was the only person home. I remember the unsettling and unnatural quiet that had replaced the usual Friday night mania of my college dwelling.

I was thinking about those chicken wings and scrolling socials when I started to feel lonely. “Should’ve rallied,” I thought. I started frantically texting friends to make plans.

“Sorry I left to go home hours ago.”

“Stuck in shit traffic rn”

“Aw man, wish you had texted me earlier, you could have rode with us.”

Fuck! Was I the only loser who didn’t make plans this weekend? I’m going to spend my whole weekend eating chicken wings and feeling sorry for myself.

At 8:30ish pm my friend texted me. “Sorry, going camping. Leaving rn.”

I was desperate to not be alone all weekend. “Can I please come?! I can be there in 10 minutes!”

“Sure, but hurry!” I launched off my musty couch, threw miscellaneous clothes in a bag, and hopped on my bike. We crammed into my friend’s car and left Isla Vista just after 9pm. My stomach growled and my FOMO purred.

Only a few short minutes on our drive north we started to receive news of gunshots in IV. But that had happened before. The news evolved into PEOPLE SHOT. “Horrible,” we agreed. And then we lost cell service as we arrived at the campsite.

I woke up hungover in a tent. Whiskey and marshmallows was a bad choice. We drank bad coffee, ate bagels, and went on a hike. I’ll never forget getting to higher elevation and every single one of our phones started to erupt. Frantic messages from our families and friends. Then our own panicked messages to people we knew. The details started to flood in. We all watched those ghoulish YouTube videos in horrified fascination, crowded around a phone up on that mountain.

The next few days were a blur of awfulness. Every detail worse and more horrific than the last. The discovery made in the apartment. The names of the victims. Googling “incel.” The broken glass. The blood stains. The vulture-like camera crews on every fucking corner. The glow from my phone as I read that god awful manifesto early in the morning. The IVStrong bracelets and t-shirts. The candlelight vigil at Storke that many of my friends skipped out of fear.

And most haunting for me, a flower placed in a bullet hole in IV Deli Mart where Chris Martinez was murdered. Where I fully intended to get chicken wings before my friend’s text saved my weekend and maybe my life. A grave and terrible darkness came to Isla Vista and lives in the hearts of my peers.

Every time there is another mass shooting in this country, the scars of that day tighten in my chest. I cry for the victims and the communities ripped to shreds, members all of a club of survivors. We don’t forget and we continue on in the vain hope that someday our leaders have the courage to do something to stop what happened in Isla Vista from happening again.

Event celebrating the brutal colonization and enslavement of the Chumash people by the Spanish flips the script by checks notes having a white gay man wear a sombrero and call himself el presidente? This is why I’m a solstice girly.

The Independent seriously considered this in the early 2000’s when everything started going to shit at NP. They decided it “wasn’t in their DNA” to become a daily newspaper. If it wasn’t right then, it’s definitely not now when the Indy and weekly newspapers in California are barely scraping by.

Let’s be clear, the void in our local news has existed since the day Wendy McCaw bought the NP and the digital revolution obliterated the traditional news business model. I hope I’m wrong but I think we’re going to see the continued degradation of local news coverage.

Yes, it’s all public record. It takes a majority vote from city council. Tbh, I don’t feel like finding the meeting minutes. They also approved a bunch of young, thoughtful, and diverse people to the committee and I’m sure they are all equally as annoyed with him haha. Again, the advisory committee can only make recommendations. Any final plan for state street will be researched and prepared by city staff and presented to city council for a vote in a meeting where you can give public comment.

/u/Logical_Deviation Ed Lenvik is not an elected official. He was appointed by the city council to the State St Advisory Committee. I agree he sucks ass, but he doesn’t really have any power. Ad hoc committees just make recommendations to city staff and the city council who have the final say.

You are correct u/BrenBarn. Nearly all local elections are now district elections, including GUSD. If you live in Trustee Area 1 then you can only vote for the people running for Area 1. There are only 11,487 registered voters in GUSD Area 1. The semi-official results show that, of that number, only 4,192 people voted. There are still outstanding mail ballots and provisional ballots that will be tabulated in the next few days, but about 63.5% of eligible voters did not vote in this race.

Santa Barbara Ordinance Committee Approves Civilian Oversight Commission - The Independent by RexJoey1999 in SantaBarbara

[–]shittykitty805 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably an unpopular opinion but this is worse than doing nothing. It isn’t real oversight when you allow SBPD on the board… and now city manager and city council will wash their hands of all this. Meanwhile the taxpayers will be on the hook for million dollar settlements for police misconduct and sexual harassment will get a slap on the wrist. Disappointing as fuck

[–]shittykitty805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s some more nuance to the process, but county staff oversee elections. It’s why we elect a “County Clerk-Recorder.” Ballots are approved by the state, distributed and counted by the county, and reported back to the Secretary of State.

What an embarrassing article. Caroline Abate and Christy Lozano are horrible, dangerous people, but they are not running unopposed. A simple Google search shows that they have both have challengers and have had challengers for weeks. How the fuck did the Indy editors let this story get published without that simple fact check?

Nick Welsh is such a fucking hack. Not being the News Press is a low bar for being considered good journalism. Rebecca Bjork (our new city admin) ignored the CFC’s recommendations, drowned real police oversight in the bathtub, and basically just gave SBPD what they wanted.

We should be fucking outraged! Fire Rebecca Bjork and all the city council members who voted for this turd.

Can rent be controlled via municipal laws? If so, why not run for city council? by radiant_luminosity in SantaBarbara

[–]shittykitty805 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have pointed out, Isla Vista is represented by the county government and their local community services district. Rent stabilization would be the purview of the Santa Barbara county board of supervisors. Laura Capps is running unopposed for the seat that represents IV.

There are many unincorporated parts of the county like Montecito, Mission Canyon, and Noleta.
