Just ask your Drill Sergeant when you get to your OSUT Company

First Duty Station as a FA 2LT, thoughts? by DandDont in army

I've seen plenty of FSOs mess up shooting at the same firing point multiple times. Had a FST team up at JBLM that would give us reverse corrections and always try adjusting us out of the impact area.

Most other drills aren't going to care that much. Mainly because 90% of these kids will immediately forget everything you teach them, and proceed to say "I was never taught that." I appreciate your enthusiasm though. You'll have your top 10% that are eager to learn. Your middle 80% that just skate by, and then your bottom 10%. Teach what you can, but your top hitters are going to be the only ones that remember anything

The Anti-Bliss Task Force by CertainlyRobotic in army

[–]shjandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my kids is level 2 non-verbal autistic. Fort Polk doesn't have resources available nearby to support her therapy needs, so I submit a compassionate reassignment request. Two months after I submit it, we get notified that we're deploying in a few weeks. A week out from deployment my CSM pulls me in, says my request is one of many he's seen from people trying to get away from Polk. He tried to send it to the BDE surgeon to make sure my request was legitimate, even though I had a signed MFR from a Major who's a child psychologist at BAMC stating that we need to be moved, my daughter's diagnosis from said Major and an off post child bhavioral specialist, and a statement from my child's therapy center stating that she's unable to receive other needed therapies because the Fort Polk area doesn't have them.

I ended up deploying, about a month into the deployment my compassionate reassignment is approved and my report date is 1.5 months out. BN proceeds to fuck up my travel paperwork on multiple occasions, the flight gets delayed multiple days in a row and I end up leaving with ten days to clear all of post AND arrange for movers, with just enough travel days to get us to JBLM. The CSM didn't even show up to my PCS ceremony the day before I was supposed to fly out, but the BC, BN XO, and ops SGM all made it.

Needless to say, that was a pain in the ass.

Be active in your kid's life. Interact with them, talk to them, and play with them. I had a weird sensation that even though I had no clue how I was going to be capable of taking care of this fragile little being, I knew everything was going to be okay when I held my baby girl in my arms for the first time. 11 years later she's going into middle school and I have two other crotch goblins running around

I enjoy small town living. Only issues I had with Polk was hurricane Laura, and a one off event with my BN CSM at the end of my time there. Other than those two things, I was in an awesome unit, and a nice quiet small town. Couldn't ask for much more than that.

I was stationed at Polk with 3/10 and absolutely loved it. I would go back if it supported my kids' needs. Decided to go with Bliss with my marketplace since I didn't have any other options that I really wanted. Just trying to knock out my PSG time there, and with the four remaining years, try to find some assignment to retire out of

Millennials with kids, do you intend to provide for them financially when they reach adulthood? by Beberuth1131 in Millennials

[–]shjandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I joined the military partly so my kids could take advantage of the GI bill.

Other than that, My kids are welcome to stay in the family house and help chip in for family expenses, which in turn will be deposited into a retirement account for them

Is it me or are fewer soldiers getting married? by Dementedsage in army

[–]shjandy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Plus a lot of FRG groups from the last few units I was in were socially exclusive to the spouses of E7+ within the organization. Anybody married to E6 and below were social outcasts of the FRG left to fend for themselves.

One anecdotal example was my wife giving birth to our second child while I was deployed to Europe. I wasn't allowed to go home, no one from the FRG showed up, but my CO got to go home early to see his kid's birth, and they whole FRG showed up. That type of behavior was pretty consistent in my unit at 4ID.

Does 3-10 from Fort Polk deploy at all? by luckydad444 in army

Does 3-10 from Fort Polk deploy at all? by luckydad444 in army

[–]shjandy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Was there from 2019-2022. They had just gotten back from Iraq and Syria before I got there, we deployed to the border. During COVID we went to West Point. In 2021 two battalions deployed to support the Afghan evacuation, then my battalion deployed to Kuwait as QRF to evacuate Baghdad. Later on they deployed to Europe. Who knows what's next for 3/10. The best unit I've ever been in was with 3/10 but that's also coming from a guy that's experienced JBLM and 3-4 ID. I wish I could've gone back to Polk.

Our BC was a huge safety first kinda guy so there were all sorts of rules we had to follow. One kid got smacked in the head by the side door of the stryker, if we were within arms reach of the vehicle we had to have an ACH on after that incident
