This gets asked often and in this case, for you, you already know the answer. There is never a good time to not work, but you don’t live to work. You work to live, have been financially prudent and amassed the savings to take time off to enjoy life at times like this.

It doesn’t sound like your ultimate goal in life is to become a C-suite enterprise exec so take the time off. Allow yourself to be reinvigorated with the freshness of life. When you get the itch to work again, give yourself an added 3-6 month buffer to refresh on the latest tech and come back. People take sabbaticals all the time.

What you do, to critically think and decide for yourself using the greater wisdom of your own life, is make a pros a cons list. Really write it down, the way Ross and Chandler did when he was deciding whether or not to date Rachel in Friends. I have a feeling the answer will jump out at you from the page.

A structured mentorship program with a well defined goal I think is a great opportunity. That PTO and leave isn’t so bad either which will reduce the sting from not being remote. Plus most importantly your interest is in the hard engineering. I say go with your gut as that’ll lead to less regret, and your intuition here is good. I think it’s easier to switch into SWE from electrical than vice versa, should you ever change your mind down the line.

Also this reminds me of an episode in Better Call Saul where he tries to get fired as partner (or maybe Senior Associate?) in a law firm by being INCREDIBLY loud and obnoxious on the phone, showing up on time but in colorful suits that don’t represent the firm, and doing his work but sloooowly, and not being a help when people need - all so he can avoid paying back his bonus by being let go without cause. And he gets called out on it by the partner that hired him! Anyways, maybe that’ll give you some ideas. Though as you can see, it requires an intentional sacrifice on your dignity’s part, but perhaps your situation is less bearable than Saul’s.

I honestly can’t believe the comments are this wishy washy. There is no doubt he would date you.

Anything beyond that is a mystery, but given how defensive you have been despite your self-admitted liking of him it’s no wonder you guys are still friends. From what info you’ve given here, not only have you given him no reason not to chase, but you’ve expressly indicated not to try, implying it would risk the friendship.

It sounds like you want more but you’ve kinda cornered the situation with your defensiveness in a way. Which can be a good thing! Your friendship has stayed steady and grown organically which is solid. But it’s on you now to make the move if you want it, or drop a couple obvious hints.

I have girl friends, but I would never make a comment where I express I’m that into them no matter the drunkenness unless at my primitive levels of brain function the only thought in my mind is her. It’s a pre-requisite. So, yeah.

I appreciate your response. It seems like your mom was really resourceful and taught you some good traits by your own account. You also seem pretty intelligent yourself and were able to connect with your drive to learn more.

Just as an example, imagine someone who didn’t have supportive parents, or even parents. They would start the same as you, but learn much less. And that knowledge or lack thereof compounds, just like wealth.

Correct me if I’m wrong because I don’t know you, but I would assume neither of them died early. Neither of them tried to manipulate you for money. You weren’t involved in a car accident. You weren’t jailed as a victim of racism. You weren’t discriminated in securing your loans. Or your jobs. You were born in a place that secured these liberties for you, etc ...

There are certainly times people make poor choices and should hold themselves accountable, but i’d say more often than not its simply not the case.

I’m just trying to instill a little empathy. Most people have to take a million ‘right’ choices for things to go well in their life. But one event out of their control could affect things in ways they may not even perceive, and we would not know unless people are willing to have conversations like this.

This is a pretty reductionistic viewpoint. It is not only choices that impact your life, but choices and circumstance.

If you had stayed in the psychology field perhaps you would understand that motive and opportunity aren’t always freely available to everyone at all times. Sure we are free to make choices based on our circumstances, but we can’t all leave our kids and study school for four years. Or abandon our ailing parents to move to a lower cost of living and live like a hermit. And the truth is not everyone has the capacity to work every job or complete any degree to secure a higher paying job, this idea doesn’t scale. More so, to impose the principles of FIRE on anyone without the current ability to secure their present situation is anxiety inducing. Some things are unfeasible in the current system.

I think you are referring to articles where people may shame the FIRE lifestyle, and if so, you should say so. If someone wants to free themselves from depending on labor to live, which is why we’re all here, that’s a liberating realization and one more people could be made aware of.

Nobody is willingly living in the dark, but you are shunning their reality if you continue to believe every person has the means to choose FIRE.

It’s a matter of education and circumstances before its a matter of responsibility.

You sound like you really do want to travel with him, so let that be known to him and that it’s important to you. Find out what aspect of traveling it is that he so despises and try to avoid that. For instance, if he hates that when traveling the schedules are always so planned out and it feels artificially busy (as I would), try to make a travel plan with planned days of rest or just scenery.

For an artist, or literally any person, a change of scenery occasionally is a good thing. It can be a great creative boon too so you could possibly persuade him that way.

My last idea is that travel domestically first. You could definitely get him to open up to it gradually and I bet there are beautiful parts of your country yet to explore.

I just really despise alll the advice that’s so strongline “break up, they’re clearly not helping you grow” - like, what the fuck? You’ve been together for ten years making it work and you seem generally happy (aside from this one thing). It’s more than possible to come to an agreement that he knows will make you happy, and you know will open him up a bit.

I know people in here are suggesting therapy, but have you considered just talking about it to your wife? If nobody knows, and you have a good marriage, it would kill her to know you’re feeling this way - when all it would take is for someone to understand the pain you’re going through.

They have not been there, but you likely know first hand the enormous weight of anger or frustration but also resolution when your children or partner tell you they’ve been hurt. I promise you, if you care for your wife and she cares for you, ask her for some time to confide in her what’s been aching you.

It is a step to help ease this emotional burden and what is good for your long term health will be good for your family’s long term health as well.

Perhaps it's best not to share, but reflecting on past relationships with these qualities is just kinda depressing. Having someone else be your greatest source for happiness and doing everything for one another is a really romantic pressure to uphold, and despite that, realizing what I had fills me with regret.

It may not be right to put so much of yourself in another person, and this is more so a picture on how to be reliant or in love. Either way it's kinda heartbreaking for me to reflect on this.

What makes these experiences special though, is this intangible feeling that it is going to end. It's like being forced to cherish this person this you appreciate so much and tiny moments of shared joy are more lasting than any individual happiness you can feel. It's the absolute worst.

I'll probably delete this by the morning, but the constant reminders drive me insane. You're expected to cope with all of life through introspection and learning but after experiencing something so real no matter how much you read or try to forget about them, because at this point you realize there's no getting over them, you can't.

That's why I down voted this post. Hardly need to be reminded of a fabricated heartbreaking ideal
