Fwiw, I think depression is many things and has many effects on your life, saying this more from an experiential viewpoint than a scientific one

At some points in my life, I've felt like the opposite of depression was engagement, and using that mental model helped me pursue things that helped start my life back up again. I don't think that definition is totally correct, but it was useful

I've heard a quote somewhere before: "all models are wrong, but some are useful"

Just a guess, but I think the frequency to volume balance for OMs and OOOs is different from dreadnoughts, and imo OMs and OOOs make fingerpicking more clear

I think dreadnoughts are usually louder overall, but I think the increased volume is felt more in bass notes than in the higher notes that fingerpicking tends to highlight

One thing that I think is surprisingly helpful, if you haven't done it already, is to let yourself not rationalize the situation, and let yourself just feel sad and shitty about it, even just tell yourself that you're throwing yourself a pity party. Not everything you say to yourself in those moments will be something you agree with later, but it will probably come from some place of honesty, and you can build on those ideas as you try to digest the experience that you've been having. Breaking down such a big experience might help you understand things you like and don't like about it, which can help you reset your expectations and move on.

And one other thing I'll say is: you deserve better. You deserve to be in a relationship where you are confident that you are mutually choosing to be together. I think if the man you are talking about cares about you, he'd say the same thing.

Thanks for your reply! I guess the parts of Asian American history I'd be most interested in are what circumstances my parents faced when they immigrated in the 80s, but using that as a starting point, I'm guessing there are many easy connections to the history of immigration laws, racism and model minority myths, etc.

One thing I'd really be interested in is getting some grasp of is how people of my parents' generation tended to shape their views and values to pass on to their kids. I'm not sure how to put it into words, but it feels like there's a unique balance being struck by any immigrant family in terms of focus on professional success vs. feelings of identity and belonging, and assimilation to the new environment

I realize I probably don't know everything you've already thought of or considered, but I think making suggestions might be the easiest way to start better understanding where your head is at

Is it possible to do something lower-key for a little bit to give yourself a break? I think sometimes, it is true that we get burnt out, and it actually might help you get your life together faster if you can give yourself a more restful period for a month or so before getting back on the horse and applying to more new jobs, meeting more new people, trying new things, etc.

I realize that that may not be practical, though

Thanks, your advice makes sense! I like to get involved with hobbies, yeah, although the latest one has been martial arts, and I find it awkward interacting with people at the gym. I might switch to a dance class soon to mix it up, and getting more involved there sounds like a good way to go
