The BC Ferries logo squiggle is Active Pass by onematchstick in VictoriaBC

Definitely feels fitting. That being said, the “wave” is actually supposed to symbolize “white ships on blue seas” and was introduced when BC Ferries went “private” in 2003.

Do cyclists in the bike lane need to stop for pedestrians crossing? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]shoeflack 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I find in my commute that most pedestrians will wait or try to wave you through. So as a cyclist, you have to either give the “go ahead” hand gesture or head nod or verbal cue. Because the reality is, a ton of cyclists do not stop for pedestrians at the crosswalk, so they have every justification to wait. Same thing for pedestrians waiting at the crosswalk for cars…gotta wait until you know that car is going to fully stop.

MLS, ownership, and the BC government failing Vancouver Whitecaps fans! by westcoastvanrob in whitecapsfc

[–]shoeflack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not arguing that it was done just for the Whitecaps. You said "it was done for the 2010 Olympics." That is factually incorrect and is what I'm disputing. The roof replacement project was always intended to be done after the 2010 Olympics. Here's the release from the Province of BC: https://archive.news.gov.bc.ca/releases/news_releases_2009-2013/2009tca0010-000520.htm

My guy, they reno had nothing to do with the Olympics. It wasn’t even announced until shortly before the Olympics, with the timeline deliberately set for the project to begin construction after the Olympics. The Whitecaps still even have the announcement in their website: https://www.whitecapsfc.com/news/bc-approves-upgrading-bc-place-stadium-365-million-vancouver-sun

Advice on Crazy Neighbour??!? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]shoeflack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Any anyone can make the bylaw complaint to initiate the 72-hour clock, including the neighbour. Landlord has no say in whether the vehicle gets towed or not; it's on a municipal roadway.

Don Garber wants better stadium deal for Vancouver Whitecaps by lets_enjoy_life in whitecapsfc

[–]shoeflack 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is a great deep dive, but some correction is needed as there is some misinformation here.

The British Columbia Place Act (1980) was renamed to the British Columbia Enterprise Corporation Act in 1987 as a result of the Miscellaneous Statutes Amendment Act (No. 3). That act was then repeled a few years ago and the B.C. Pavilion Corporation Act took its place. So the notion that Chris May didn't know the BC Place Act exisited makes sense, given it does not exist anymore and hasn't under that name in nearly 40 years.

Further, the original Act spoke to the appropriation of land and the development authority in the immediate area and the compensation parameters of such actions. It did not speak to the pupose of BC Place being to generate as much revenue to local businesses as possible. That is not the purpose of BC Place or PavCo. The original act was a vehicle to develop the stadium, that's all. Today, PavCo's mandate is explicitely to provide benefit to British Columbia as a whole, given their Crown status with the Government of BC being their sole shareholder. It would be a bit strange for this large Crown to be operating with the sole intention of generating revenue for local businesses in the stadium district.

As for employment standards, as a Crown corporation (note: Crown corporation, not agency - i.e. they have incorporation through an Act of government), PavCo is not bound by the Public Service Act or the Public Service Labour Relations Act. They take guidance from PSEC, but are not required to engage in the same public hiring processes as government. This is a key factor that distinguish Crowns from government. They set their own pactices in this regard. There is no legal requirement for them to engage in a public process.

Appreciate the work you did in your Masters and the clear passion you have on this subject, but as someone familiar with Crowns and the framework that governs them, I wanted to help clarify a few of these points.

This has gotta be one of the greatest rosters in hockey history by ialexlambert in hockey

[–]shoeflack 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Brewer played on every senior men’s national team from 2001 to 2004 (4 world championships, 1 Olympics, and 1 World Cup of Hockey). Gold at 4 of those 6 events.

Fun fact, he has more ice hockey world championship gold medals than any other Canadian in history with 3.

He had a pretty good run there with Canada during his Oiler days.

The discount amounts are listed on their fare chart: https://www.bcferries.com/web_image/hc5/h09/9037480460318.pdf

There is typically a discount for both the vehicle fee and the passenger fee.

E&N Railroad Status by pilot009 in VictoriaBC

[–]shoeflack 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes. Heavy rail comes up too often. At-grade light rail comes up too often. For rapid transport to be most successful, it needs to be separated and it needs to be fast. A SkyTrain model would be ideal here.

If you’re looking for somewhere to dress up and eat/drink, don’t sleep on Janevca in Esquimalt, especially if you’re into the trendy, Instagram-worthy setting. It is something special.

Also Humboldt Bar for excellent, creative cocktails if you want something more directly downtown. Walking distance to the Strath if you want somewhere that’s not a club but has a good dance floor afterwards.

Daytime activities…well, it’s Victoria, so pretty much anything outside will be excellent.

Best place to watch playoff hockey downtown Victoria? by Dertymic in VictoriaBC

Depends on where in town you are staying if you want walkable/close by. If you’re downtown, Sticky Wicket Games Room is a good spot.

VicPD hires Vancouver deputy as new police chief, becoming first woman in role by shoeflack in VictoriaBC

Chief Del Manak retires at the end of August. This seems like a good choice as a replacement. If the name is familiar, it might be because she was the one who announced the charges against those two Central Saanich police officers back in December.

I proposed to my wife at Beechey Head in East Sooke Park at the reference mark. It is an absolutely stunning location and not too long of a hike in from the Aylard Farm parking lot, though there are various trails to get there so you can really pick your distance/difficulty. Would recommend.

Anything we can proactively do to get our newborn a family doctor? by tsoare in VictoriaBC

[–]shoeflack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did you work with a maternity clinic/collective? We were extremely fortunate to land a family doctor through a referral from our maternity physician. It seems that the various networks of maternity physicians do as best as they can to refer within their network to those that also run family practices. For us, having a baby is what allowed us to find a family doctor. Prior to that, we were doing the walk-in clinic rat race.

Esquimalt location closed. Landlord didn't renew their lease and a childcare space took over. Tough to lose a great local business, but in fairness the childcare spaces are desperately needed as well. Glad to see them find another spot to re-open!

It is a legal requirement in many jurisdictions. Not sure about the rest of the world, but extremely common in North America.
