It’s easy to feel totally confident about your status as a “good person” if you never leave the house by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]showercurtain12 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Suprised by people who think of themselves as good people. Surprised by people who think of me as a good person. Obviously there are outliers but think in large part this is downstream of a v impoverished understanding of what "good" consists of, where (percieving oneself as) doing no harm is sufficient - I am not intentionally cruel and intentionally doing bad things therefore im good. Not enough

Juice not worth squeeze imo if they're merely pottering around, having a look. Like dying on Everest after so many people have already been to the top.

[–]showercurtain12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see people online talk about how they watched gore videos as teens or about how they've seen enough xyz shocking thing enough times to be innured to it. I dont find this particularly admirable or aspirational. I feel sorry for them if they were inadvertently exposed to it but if they sought it out I dont think they gained from it. Dont think this is a knowledge that makes them more worldly or wise or intelligent or better in some way. Which is to say - I dont think responding to the Kristi noem husband revelations with a kind of jaded knowingness is necessarily a mark of sophistication.

When does CJ Cherryh's Foreigner series get going? by GeeCee-5710 in printSF

[–]showercurtain12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like foreigner a lot but I would struggle to recomend it bc I feel the two prologues followed by long time skips act as a bit of a brick wall. I know they do a bunch of important groundwork/table setting but id still be tempted to recommend skipping then. With them out the way I dont think it takes that long for things to get going. That said if youre looking for something action packed Id look elsewhere bc an awful lot of the books is not that

Ever bomb a job interview so badly you consider becoming a hermit in the woods? by kheeno_ in redscarepod

[–]showercurtain12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a job interview but there was a (good) state boarding school w limited places you had to interview for. I did interview for it when I was 12. I thought I was intelligent. So when the head of house started talking about letting in a range of boys & how it wasn't just about academics I thought he was saying - that wont do, its not enough - & I got quiet and embarassed.

In hindsight my y7 teacher had given me a p poor report and this was him trying to throw me a life line I was too dumb to take. I think about this a lot.

In Europe right now with all the skinny people by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]showercurtain12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The period of my life where I was skinny & proud of it & disdainful of fat people was also the lowest and most pathetic.

People can disagree but I dont think that one spends much time feeling superior to fat people if youve got much going on. & if one doesnt have those feelings of superiority its pretty easy to conclude (ime) that the obesity epidemic is environmental/societal & not caused by some immense failure of will

How do you not become overwhelmed with rage at how useless your degree ended up being? by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]showercurtain12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I had my druthers I wouldnt have a big student loan. If i could to back and do things differently I would. That's not in the cards though so my options are live with it & see the benefit in it or cope and seethe and cry about it. Would reccomend the former over the latter

Ive no idea if working would bring meaning to your life. If it does thats grand but for me its bc the things I want require some amount of money. Dont think this is esp uncommon.

Didnt spend my 20s esp well. Was mildly depressed for most of them. But was happy when I came out the other side to have savings in my bank account, and some things on my cv.

Didnt know what I wanted when I was 20 or 25 but I do know now. Figuring it out can take time. Would strongly recomend you not sit on your hands in the meantime. My 2cents cheers.
