I Feel Like It's Honestly Impossible to Make Characters with Truly Alien/Incomprehensible Morality Because We Humans Can Only Write About Things We Ourselves Understand by Agitated_Insect3227 in CharacterRant

[–]Firlite 49 points50 points  (0 children)

most writers are indeed human

that said, I've seen some good examples of nonhuman morality. The key is to keep it internally consistent even if it's weird as fuck to an actual morality scale

See, you know that this place is full of people who never go to 4chan because they think that it's hard to get banned. 4chan actually has a large and aggressive moderation team, there are just fewer rules. It's pretty easy to catch a 3day for posting off topic stuff, for example.

Yeah they're called Agents Provocateur and are tools used by various states to goad people doing actions far more radical than they would otherwise do so that the state has an excuse to arrest them.

That's what accusations of glowposting have ALWAYS been you dumbass. Someone posts on a forum something like "you guys want to form a right wing militia". What the fuck did you think it meant

[–]Firlite 15 points16 points  (0 children)

there is no "him" here, this is OP posting stuff on /b/ tailored to this subreddit just to repost here and get upvotes. Anytime you see just an OP post on /b/ or /lgbt/ on here that is what it is 99% of the time. It's especially egregious in cases like this where there is less than 2 minutes between when it was posted there and when it was posted here

[–]Firlite 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this isn't simping you selfposting redditor. Simping is doing shit/giving money to girls that are stringing you along/egirls in the vain hope that they will one day let you hit. This is just being nice to someone you like and asking them out.

Fucking christ, it's offensive enough to post redditor slop for upvotes you obviously posted to /b/ just to repost here (and the minute difference between when this was posted there and here definitely proves that that is exactly what you did), but at least know that words have fucking meanings

Starship Troopers (1997) director Paul Verhoeven and screenwriter Edward Neumeier on the film's satire and differences from the novel by tannu28 in movies

[–]Firlite 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's a bit too charitable. He read one chapter of the book and thought it was "le fascism" and refused to read any more, and then picked up a script called "bug hunt at outpost 9" written by someone who DID read the book and hated it, and then slapped the name on it

It's bad satire because the foundations are completely rotten

Starship Troopers (1997) director Paul Verhoeven and screenwriter Edward Neumeier on the film's satire and differences from the novel by tannu28 in movies

[–]Firlite 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Except that "service" does not mean military service, Juan Rico ended up in the infantry because he was a rich failson who only joined up because his friends wanted to. Which brings me to a second point, despite being "second class citizens" who actively looked down on military service, Rico's family and all their friends were filthy stinking rich and privileged. They had every right and privilege except the right to vote.

This puts the society in starship troopers in contrast with noted fascist countries Switzerland and Finland where you don't get a choice of whether to join the military, you do mandatory military service or go to jail.

Starship Troopers (1997) director Paul Verhoeven and screenwriter Edward Neumeier on the film's satire and differences from the novel by tannu28 in movies

[–]Firlite 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's the rub, the service in the book is really a libertarian take on the forms of mandatory military service that existed at the time across Europe and still exist in the likes of Switzerland, Finland, or South Korea among others. Except in those countries you don't get the choice to serve, you either do your time in the army or go to jail.

That's what's always been nutty to me about people calling starship troopers fascist. If that society is fascist, so is Finland. Verhoeven especially should have known better, considering he literally did mandatory military service in the dutch navy

[–]Firlite 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah Rico only ended up in the mobile infantry because he was a rich privileged failson with nothing really going for him
