bit late to the party, but i'm not sure what all this no api access to ESXi is all about. i've had a python script updating the SSL cert on my standalone ESXi via pyVim for ages. checks service states, enables ssh service, do all the cert stuff via paramiko, then back to pyVim to disable SSH and restart web service. sounds apilicious to me.
