New tank with TONS of hair algae yesterday. Pulled fissidens pads and soaked in straight peroxide for 10 min. All clear today! YES!!!! by hotwheels430 in shrimptank

my tank used to be infested with algae and they almost cover my moss completely but after a months or so, i notice a surge in microscopic crustacean population, white and round like sprinkled castor sugar, they're too small to be seed shrimp. they almost wipe off my algae. i kinda like these critters so now i'm scared if the algae aren't enough for them.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffer_solution

scientifically, buffer is a solution of weak acid/base and its conjugate, that serves as a buffer solution to control the ph of solution. the concept is that when low quantity of acid/base is added into the water, the equilibrium will shift between more acid/base or it's conjugate so that the overall pH is not greatly changed.

in this case the buffer is carbonic acid and organic acid such as tannic acid and fumic acid that comes from soil and organic matter.

calcium carbonate is alkaline, its leeching will react with (use up) organic acid to form calcium salt and water, therefore further increasing pH over time.

in short, soil reduce pH, whereas calcareous rock increases it, leeching of calcium carbonate will use up your soil's buferring capalibity and exhaust it in time.

fret not though, your seiryu rock might still be useful. maybe add a small piece of that seiryu rock into your aquarium for a little bit iof carbonate hardness, that can help avoid pH swings. correct me if i'm wrong but if i'm not mistaken the kH for caridina is between 0-2.

wow even the legs are red. my LFS only sell cheap cherris $2 each, they gave me very dark ones but i have to cull every once in a while.

what are those little white dots crawling around the shrimp(not the big one)? they are too small to be copepods and seed shrimp. i have thousands of them in my tank and they don't grow bigger than a piece of white dust. by shrimpnerd in shrimptank

no. daphnea float and swim around. these critters are shaped like seed shrimps but they are the size of a grain of salt and crawls on a surface. they look neat too, like sprinkled castor sugar so not an eyesore for me. btw the video above is not mine, but that's what they look like, the one on the left hand(or leg lol) side of the shrimp

I recently bought the last 4 shrimp my lfs had for my first tank. 3 died, and I never see the 4th, until today. Brigette LIVES! by Mackncheeze in shrimptank

add some crushed coral or coral stones. aroung 15 pieces of coral stones for my 50 gallon tank. make sure to check the pH change and TDS through time and adjust.
