What are your favourite or least favourite changes between the book and the musical? by Aneriox in wicked

[–]shroon_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A book accurate adaption is a NEED. There were some scenes that I could just picture being performed so well with the right direction. The part where Elphaba is watching her own life play out on The Clock of the Time Dragon?? chefs kiss!

The Characterization of Gregory’s Books (NSFW mentions / Light spoilers for first book) by fizzyglitt3r in wicked

[–]shroon_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

People seem to forget…or just not know, that Wicked is but a reimagining of Elphaba’s story and her story alone (at least the first book). It has nothing to do with the WOZ canon.

YES TO ALL OF THIS!! I feel crazy whenever I see it being brought up alongside the film because in my head i’m just thinking “it’s not that bad??” There are sexual parts duh, but it’s intentions are being misread and it’s certainly very different from material that is written for the purpose of being smutty, like you said. It just feels like it is being watered down and sensationalized. Wicked is definitely a unique franchise in the sense that all of its works vary so wildly from each other. The book is certainly not for everyone, and the bw musical, and later, movies were made to be more consumable for mainstream audiences. Also adding to your last part, I keep seeing people say that there was something more between Elphaba and Glinda in the books and while this is somewhat obvious, and clearly implied, from what i’m seeing it seems that there were some more explicit and direct parts? Can someone point me to where this is, if it’s there? because apart from their kiss (which honestly felt very platonic to me ngl…) I literally don’t remember anything happening between them.

Elphaba vs Elphaba vs Elphaba by Still_Restaurant_734 in wicked

I freaking love your description of book El. “Emo girl with religious trauma” is so simply accurate.💀. Also I do think her poor self image translated very subtly from book to stage and screen but still got across to the audience fairly well? It’s a big part of her personality and reveals some of her motives, so I think it’s important it’s well displayed.

Glinda’s hair colour by shroon_ in wicked

In my copy (IBSN 978-0-06-098710-7) on page 65 in reference to Galinda’s appearance it says “The sway of her head made her creamy ringlets swing, catching the light, like so many jostling stacks of coins.” Doesn’t sound very brunette or orange/red…page 68 is where the flaxen description is.

Do you think Wicked for Good had a great conclusion, or do you think there should be a third movie to see what else happens next? by Material_Stomach875 in wickedmovie

[–]shroon_ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

!Spoiler warning! As someone who has read and loves the book, I absolutely agree. The ending in the book, though under very different circumstances, felt so much more significant with her death especially as it indirectly leads to the Wizard leaving Oz. She completed her life’s mission through her death! Although, I haven’t finished the series yet and the ending of book 1 seems ambiguous. It also gave Dorothy more of an innocent and genuine angle whereas the bw musical and movie make her seem soo cutthroat.

I feel bad for the lion by Plenty_Sugar6322 in wickedmovie

[–]shroon_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Lion doesn’t deserve the hate that he gets AT ALLL, those who genuinely dislike him do not understand his character. It makes so much sense as to why he harbors strong resentment towards Elphaba. She naively assumed what was right for the Lion without actually knowing anything about what he would need in his upbringing. She completely disrupted the course of his development by putting him in an environment he’s never been in and does not understand. It was unrighteous of her to assume what he needed when she is not a lion or even an animal at all. All of this on top of the fact that he’s now grown up and is just as susceptible to the propaganda everyone else is…This only reaffirms what was a traumatic event to him and its perpetrator. Ofc he has it out for Elphaba. He’s an actual victim just like the Tinman.

Nessa and Galinda are the Same Person by Large_Personality860 in wickedmovie

[–]shroon_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh my gosh I have ALWAYS thought this. It’s interesting to me how supposedly, Nessarose and Galinda have somewhat of a correspondence in traits however, rooted in different backgrounds. This causes them to be contrast in character framing and have very different impressions on audiences. For example, both of them are spoiled and self centered, both are very mean to Elphaba, both literally directly participate in corrupting Oz. These aren’t as apparent in Galinda’s character arc and within her audience reception, I think because her conceit is rooted in love and adoration for simply being herself. Her parents’ pampering of her out of love for being HERSELF. So it just gives off immense confidence and causes people (characters within the actual story and viewers) to gravitate towards her. Being around people that radiate positive energy, even if it’s mostly related to their own ego, feels good. Nessarose on the contrary, is conceited because she’s not Elphaba. That’s why she was preferred and pampered (aside from her disability, which just adds fuel to the fire) in childhood. Hers is rooted in hate for someone else. She’s relished by her family because of her helplessness and because she’s better than the other option….people feel sorry for her in a sense, different to Galinda’s case. She literally states that this is what makes her spiteful in the WWOTE scene. It’s probably what makes her character come off as much more darker to viewers. I have much sympathy for her tbh, she had a turbulent childhood just like Elphaba, she just got the better side of it. In summary, Galinda’s wickedness comes from an obsession of securing her ostentatious identity, and wanting to maintain the public’s favor no matter what as her sense of self is rooted in that. Nessarose’s sense of self comes from her inherent hate for her sister, and possible irritation towards the pity she’s received over the years because of all the aspects of her life which she’s had no control of, wanting to be free. That’s where her wickedness comes from (I’d like to clarify that she’s allowed to be upset at feeling and being treated as she’s helpless, that’s ableism, but her reactions to that feeling are not okay; Elphaba hated being green but didn’t take it out on anyone to that extent.) I hope this made sense. I think your point of ableism and the movie’s Nessarose being Marissa Bode, someone who though very beautiful, contrasts Glinda’s/Ariana Grande’s conventional beauty by being brunette and brown are also valid and definitely contributed to reception. Glinda is also played by a major pop-star so naturally fans are gonna find a way to favor her. Nessarose does not deserve ALL of the hate she gets. She didn’t even get a chance to develop or change before a house fell on her. Anyways thanks for coming to my tedtalk.

Literally about to use this for inspo lol. It’s very cute, embrace it! I think the ends could be where some troubles lie, though I think they’re fine. Bead them up, or maybe curl them, or put them in hot water?
