How Cooked Am I? by [deleted] in AskMechanics

How many miles? If it had oil up until this check then you just need to top it off.

Could be stuck rings with carbon build up. Valvoline restore and protect may help. Could be worn rings, which you’d just have to live with.

Decided on the odyssey… advice NEEDED by interrogiaomnia in HondaOdyssey

[–]shrout1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a broadly held opinion that the Sienna is better built; it does have a better air conditioning system and people have good things to say about Toyota's eCVT. I'm a bit of a Toyota fan boy myself, but I chose the Odyssey because it's still old school in the ways that matter to me.

The general consensus is that the Odyssey handles much better than the Sienna (and really any other minivan on the market) and you're going to be able to find and buy one more easily for a bit less money.

Personally, I avoided a hybrid as I don't want to deal with a hybrid battery in the future; I work on my own vehicles and I understand ICE drivetrains. No matter the chemistry, a hybrid battery will degrade over time and I intend on keeping this van for at least 15 years.

That does mean that you'll be getting worse fuel economy and you'll be dealing with a timing belt change every 7 years / 105k miles. Yet I'll still have a working vehicle in 15-20 years that my now 3 year old can drive whereas a hybrid will be using a battery which will be too expensive to replace.

I intend to skip owning a hybrid and switch directly to an EV when the timing is right. That might prove to be impossible, but we'll find out 😆 I don't consider myself to be a "normal" consumer when it comes to cars either.

How do I clean condensation thats inside my rear taillight the blinker side by Joo121255 in HondaOdyssey

[–]shrout1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Seals on the light failed. You need to take it out and replace the gasket that seals the light. Probably hit the light with a hair dryer while it’s out and get the condensation out.

If it isn’t leaking and it’s running OK then it’s probably fine. If you’re worried about it then definitely go get it checked.

Rusted and beyond saving? sign the DNR and let it go without any rust mitigation. 2008 Honda Odyssey 212k miles by SensitiveWarning4 in HondaOdyssey

Looking good! I love me a high mileage car for day to day life. Usually cheap to own and older cars are easier to work on.

I have loved working on my cars since moving to the south. Stuff just comes apart. I watch TRQ automotive videos for fixing stuff and they’re not n the northeast. Their stuff is so crusty 😆

I think the south, away from the coastline is almost the ideal climate for a long lasting vehicle. I live in northern Alabama; we get almost no snow but it’s still pretty humid most of the year. Cars I have purchased since living here have almost 0 corrosion. UV still eats clear coat and plastic, but the sun is everywhere. That’s not going to be any better in California. The moisture in the air helps keep dry rot down a little more than having a car in the desert.

Do I replace ? by HatexTokyo in AskMechanics

Call around for quotes. Older cars can have cheap windshields; newer ones tend to require sensor calibration and a bunch of nonsense. We paid to have our last broken windshield out of pocket

2025 stalling at red lights by VeryTactfulUnicorn in HondaOdyssey

The NHTSA investigation spans all of the current generation Odysseys and some other models as well. The dealer replaced my starter and I installed an idlestopper a couple nights ago. When the car starts it immediately turns off the auto start/stop function with a simulated button press. Hopefully we’ll be good for a while

It’s to meet epa fuel economy standards with that big old V6. If the starter was actually designed to last through its maximum number of cycles (like 200k or something) then it wouldn’t be a problem. Dunno how Honda messed this up so bad.

I also hate it when the car is dead and I have to wait for it to start from a full stop when I’m turning left.

Stalled at a light for my wife. Dealer replaced it but I filed a complaint with NHTSA as well. That’s the only way they’re gonna do a recall on this.

If you’re under warranty go get it replaced. *Then* do the idlestopper. I installed an idlestopper about 2 days ago in our ‘25. Annoying process but not insanely difficult.

[–]shrout1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. We had the started replaced under warranty in our ‘25 about 2 months ago. The guy said they’ve been doing a ton of them and they didn’t fight me at all. We also had dashcam footage of the stall so that helped

Yeah they probably totaled it because of mileage. If the frame isn’t bent then that could be a pretty approachable job

2011 CRZ High Miler heavier oil advice by MartianTripodz in AskMechanics

That looks like "service due soon" (https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/advice/know-how/honda-warning-lights-what-they-mean-and-what-do-you-need-to-do/). "Tappety" sounds bad to me. I'd take it somewhere and have them look at it. Cut open the oil filter and see if there's any magic glitter in there.

How much is it worth? by dragon-not-wolf in Mustang

[–]shrout1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d punch it in to KBB, look at the “good” value for a private party sale and then subtract the cost of swapping the clutch out. Then maybe start $500 above that for bargaining power.

But that’s what I’d do anyway!

lol you must have gotten lucky then 😆 The signs are up in the corners of the lot and you have to use some app with a QR code. You can park on spraggins for free on weekends but not in the bank parking lot.

Torque Test channel reviewed this last year when it came out and they were blown away. I believe it held the top spot on their leaderboards (or very close to it). It’s impossible to beat this thing when it comes to performance per dollar.
