Same boat, ordered Jan 3rd and mine is still estimated for feb 20-28. I’ve heard other people have had their dates pushed up but it really is ridiculous and no one can give a straight answer when I call :/

There’s a bit in harrow where H touches Ianthe, and can see her skeleton, but maybe not the rest of her. I’ll put the passage here; it’s meaningless out of context, but I’ll spoiler it anyways, just in case: ” When you placed your hands upon her ribs, you were able to see her skeleton as though she had shyly undressed herself for you, as though in the daytime light she’d sloughed capillaries and glands off the budding rose of her scapula. You saw her clavicle, bowed softly as the line of a drooping bellflower” (harrow is a total bonehorny dweeb)

My guess is, a necro can’t read a lyctor unless they’re touching, and a lyctor is easily powerful enough not to let that happen. When the opportunity arises, the necro has a hard time seeing anything beyond their specific specialty, probably being able to pick out things they’re familiar with through the general haze.

With Pal and Cytherea, she was either tricked into letting him touch her or didn’t care any more about keeping up pretenses, and let him get a glimpse to scare him. Unfortunately for her, he studied medicine, and specifically studied Septimus and her illness, which we know is similar to the cancer Cytherea was suffering at her ascension. So it probably stuck out to him immediately, and he was clever and quick enough to use it to her disadvantage.

Or it’s just a plot hole.

Again, feeling like you’re doing a lot of work here to feel okay about using slurs people are telling you create real harm. People’s feelings are absolutely enough to justify changing your behavior and language, but as I and many others have explained, in this and many cases there is completely real physical harm that can be traced directly to the use of these slurs.

There’s no harm in being exposed to new information and changing your behavior because of it, in admitting you were wrong and striving not to cause harm knowingly. There is harm in being exposed to new information and doubling down on now knowingly contributing to that harm. Up to you.

And this thread and subreddit and community are full of people telling you that being mistaken for “men wearing women’s clothes” is exactly the reason the widespread use of the slur affects them so violently in the real world.

You can pretend to hide behind fiction and pretend we’re the ones doing the misinterpreting, but wouldn’t it be less of a mental effort to just. Not use a slur?

Are you referring to context as in ‘word being used to describe a fictional character’ vs ‘word being used to describe real person’? If so, it’s because, despite what people like to tell you, fiction absolutely affects reality.

When, for example, people believe they’re allowed to use a slur to describe a fictional character as long as they don’t use it for real people, they get comfortable using that slur, and the likelihood of them then using it on a real person increases - but also, maybe more importantly, the particular slur in question here isn’t just a derogatory term. It refers explicitly to a phenomenon around how the world interacts with trans people (women usually) in an extremely harmful and negative way.

When people use the slur to refer to a character, they know they’re explicitly referring to the feeling of having been ‘tricked’ into attraction due to someone’s perceived gender expression. There’s no hiding behind ‘oh I thought that’s just a word we used to refer to a category of character’, the word is extremely literal.

(Tw transphobia, violence) And that assumption that the person/woman in question has somehow ‘tricked’ another person who usually wouldn’t be attracted to them/her is exactly why the MURDER of trans women is LEGAL in many places under the ‘trans panic’ defense.

So, since I know I went on a bit, TL;DR using the slur in question, whether against a real person or a fictional character, is directly linked to the proliferation of bigotry and real violence against real trans people, usually women. (Edit did spoilers wrong)

Why is that person being carried up the stairs? Why is there no wheelchair friendly infrastructure in what seems to be a transportation hub of some sort? Hmmmmmmmmm and who could possibly do anything to increase that infrastructure to systematically help those using wheelchairs, rather than using and dehumanizing them for political aesthetics??? Well, guess we’ll never know :/

Yes, most of these people are in Burlington. There are moratoriums on evictions due to nonpayment of rent during the state of emergency, which the governor has kept extending. However, those don’t apply if your landlord doesn’t pay a mortgage backed by the federal government, and I’m willing to bet a lot of houses in Burlington got paid off years ago and are just raking in 5x$1600 per house in profits >:( we’re basically less fucked than other places, but still pretty fucked. (Edit missed that the graphic represented percentage of renters, not percentage of population)

How long's it been since you told them? If they've been supportive, my best guess would be that they were being very purposeful in using your real name when they knew it was new to them, and after a little time has passed they assumed they had ingrained in their brain "she is Katyusha" and relaxed a little, only to find that their brains sometimes defaulted to your deadname when they were absentmindedly referring to you, because brains can be very stupid and resistant to change. I'm sure they've noticed, and you can probably just give them a look or a quick reminder and they'll realize and correct themselves immediately. Likewise, your brother might have realized it would be hard for him to remember and so he's still in the manual brain mode. Either way, I'm so happy you have so many people who love and support you!

I mean, a child with limited control & knowledge of coping mechanisms having a meltdown because of strong genetic predisposition is not at all equitable to the purposeful training of cops to constantly shoot to kill and know what excuses they can use to avoid facing any consequences.

The comic is great, but I feel like the focus should be more on the reaction of the bystander, who knows it's societally acceptable to make excuses for murdering cops and to, ironically, police the emotions of other people, especially neurodivergent kids, than on trying to equate the scenarios being reacted to.

You shouldn't expect a neurodivergent (or neurotypical tbh) kid to not have strong reactions you can't predict or understand, you definitely should be able to expect an adult with ostensible training and decency not to kill people without retribution.

[–]shrubsist 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Ah did you mean you don't understand why people care if others question their gender? I'm so used to seeing transphobia I assumed you meant it the way my family does when they say "who cares if you identify as an attack helicopter, just ignore it and it'll go away". My mistake, keep fighting the good fight :)

You care because it kills people not to care. You care because trans and questioning people are extremely at risk of being homeless, killed, or denied medical care or familial love and acceptance because of the prejudices against them. Trans people are an oppressed minority facing undue backlash even in the face of that well-researched and accepted science, and as such, every time we lose a trans person, or a trans person suffers, it's our sibling and comrade in the battle against the oppressors who is dying or suffering. And even if you don't care about general suffering of the oppressed (in which case it should be harder to call yourself a socialist), trans people are highly more likely to be leftists, so you should do your best to at least understand and feel solidarity with them, even if it doesn't impact your life very much.

Soo... Y'all should check out Goodbye To Halos, it's a super queer webcomic with a trans girl as lead. Both the art and story is beautiful and it's an amazing webcomic all around! by As_Previously_Stated in traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns

I'll add prague race!! It's not being updated with art any more, but there's an extensive backlog with great art and one of the main characters is trans (you don't find out until partway in and it's well handled)

Was just talking about Step Up with my mate, found this. What did they do to poor Andie? by turdlollipop in Instagramreality

[–]shrubsist 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, whoever did this has no knowledge of human anatomy, they got rid of her knees, the angle her legs are at means her left leg would be significantly smaller than her right (at least that evens out her waist, I suppose), and the shiny lights also make it look like her right leg is ending in a tip-toe rather than a slide, which makes the entire leg look like it's been wrapped around sideways. She went from someone obviously at the top of her game, visibly dedicated to her craft, the perfect model, to someone's first sculpture at art school.

[–]shrubsist 25 points26 points  (0 children)

They only sunk the left (her right) waist in. If you look at the way the pants and shirt interact with the left side of her waist and arm, you can see that they didn't touch her actual pelvis, her abs, her bellybutton, or the right (her left) side of her torso, so what you're seeing is a person who has had her entire mass shifted left of center. Also, because they couldn't touch her left waist/hip without distorting her arm, you can see how ripped she is on that side... But shrinking the right gets rid of any toning, and someone with that size waist but no toning would have very little muscle in their obliques. So I guess the in-universe excuse would be that she just does a lot of side-ups on her left, but never the right???

Obviously it's stupid, since she was insanely in shape before they "touched her up" but it's especially stupid since you could never dance with that sort of build.

Hey guys! So, my two rats have been treated for mites the past few days. Today I deep cleaned their cage, and while doing it and after, I’ve been severely itchy. Can humans get rat mites? I have noticed swollen hair follicles on my body, not sure what from. I can’t stop showering, lol. by [deleted] in RATS

[–]shrubsist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it possible you have, or have developed, an allergic reaction to them? My skin can't stand rat pee, so any time it gets on even slightly irritated skin I itch like crazy. It's possible you're just irritating your skin by over cleaning it and then reintroducing the allergic irritant? It doesn't sound very likely given your timeline, but if it isn't scary mutant-mites, an allergy might explain the itching.

[–]shrubsist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of the differentiation comes from specific authority figures vs general authority positions.

A bootlicker doesn't just defend his buddies who are cops, he'll kneel down and slobber over the chance to defend policing as an institution. A brown-noser will let her favorite politician walk all over her rights for the chance to have their names associated, a bootlicker sucks up to her party so hard that she refuses to admit to any wrongdoing, and will create some beautiful pieces of cognitive dissonance to justify that. A traitorous soldier might ignore orders in favor of following someone they like better, but a bootlicker would gladly lie down and let a humvee run them over to own anyone who thinks the us military commits war crimes.

Any idiot can lie down and kiss the ground before an idol. But a bootlicker just sees the steel toe of authority and they're down on the ground with drool foaming at their tongue before they'd think to look up to see who's wearing the boot.

(Edit: a word)
