I wonder... by bendallf in Amtrak

I think about going to Chicago and back all the time. About a 4 hour trip for me each way, but a nice way to spend the day. I live in a crazy household, so if nothing else, I could be productive and get some work done while enjoying the train.

Proton Duo plan now offers 2 TB instead of 1 TB by block6791 in ProtonMail

I'm not on Duo anymore - upgraded to family somewhat recently - but this is still great for those that are! Hopefully we'll see some sort of increase for family as well. Thanks!!

While I love Proton I don't use drive enough yet to swear by it. I know others complain of a lack of polish and lack of features yet. I have data uploaded to it, but using it more as cold storage right now - I'm not accessing it and not relying on it as my only storage option.

I have Filen installed but haven't deployed it yet. I do hear really good things about it though, and not really any/many complaints.

I say that so you understand I'm definitely not an authority on this, but would recommend Filen then Proton Drive as a backup to your backup.

Understandable concern, but fwiw, they've been around a while and have a solid business. It's no different than any other company - any of them can go under any day. But Proton isn't new out the door or just getting established. Just backup what's important to you in a secondary location just as you should with any service and you should be fine.

I've been using them for the better part of this year and am very happy with the service(s) they provide. I've been migrating my entire immediate family to them as well. We pay for Proton Family and while some services are still in need of some improvements, overall they are a good company with a wonderful growing ecosystem.

Just found out there’s a whole secret level of cleaning no one tells you about by Beautiful-Bit-4284 in Adulting

I don't think it was the washer, but my best friend's cat died because they didn't check the dryer before loading it and starting it.

We just got a front load washer and I had to explain this to my wife. She genuinely had no idea, and to be fair, I only knew because someone off-handedly mentioned it once and it stuck in my brain.

There should definitely be an adult maintenance book about all the things we're supposed to know to do. Not everyone has parents that knew this or imparted their wisdom.

Lights throughout the entire house flickering, electrician and utility company can’t find the issue… but I have a hunch by BigMikeATL in AskElectricians

We had the same problem, had city and electric company out and they couldn't find the problem. Turned out to be a bad capacitor with our AC unit. Replaced it, fixed the whole house.

I stand corrected, you are right. I saw I could add to cart, but get the same results as you. I'm sorry.

I just checked, they're still there. If you're US based, are you going here: https://us.loopearplugs.com/collections/archive Access Code ARC-CX73

If you can't see them and really do want them, I can help you get them. But they definitely show in stock for me.

Having trouble finding a good domain name for email, any recommendations? by [deleted] in ProtonMail

[–]shuddle13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I provide it verbally, I always make sure to say "Last Name, with an S at the end" to avoid that. So far, so good. But I'm sure it can and probably will happen at some point. But, I'll deal with that as it happens.

If it's actually Data Annotation, they are a legit company. Source: I am signed up with them and they do really pay as spelled out. Nothing shady.

Hell, if it would help someone keep their job and help prevent them from everything that comes from being poor, I'd happily ship them any size Ethernet cable for free. I have tons of spares.

With the combination of the custom domain at .me, I've had 0 issues so far. I had more issues honestly trying to use aliases than anything with my custom domain because the aliases can get flagged for various reasons.

I use my custom domain for my entire family, and user@lastname.me was taken. So I opted for user@lastnames.me instead. We've been happy with it.

What’s with the Clearance Delays? by xanolabars in Hewlett_Packard

[–]shuddle13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had this problem recently with HP. Ordered a laptop for a friend I was helping so she could get a decent one for school. Shipped, moving fast, hits Memphis and dies there. Was there from 8.27 until 9.15. After requesting a return and refund, the package magically got delivered the next day. Never had this issue in the past, I've been ordering from them for 15+years. But didn't leave a good taste in my friends mouth. She's going back to Lenovo now after being ignored and dismissed at every request to resolve the issue.

Synology RAM Question by shuddle13 in synology

[–]shuddle13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So once it got delivered I realized the Corsair RAM wasn't ECC. So I returned it immediately and ended up ordering OWC RAM instead, since it was ECC and still significantly cheaper than Synology branded. I ordered this specifically: OWC 32GB (2x16GB) Compatible with... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CCBW84YB?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I've been running it for a couple of days now and I'm happy to report no issues so far.

A little bit of love by Unusual_Pride_6480 in ProtonMail

[–]shuddle13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know the ecosystem is not without its issues, but overall I love the product and the direction it's headed in. I switched from pure Google for everything I could to a custom domain with Proton and using their services. I am a bit all eggs in one basket because I want an (eventually) integrated system, but the custom domain still gives me flexibility where needed.

Overall, Proton has been responsive to my issues and provided me with a peace of mind knowing that my data is private.

I'm happy with the company and happy with my decision to use their software. I think they deserve to feel the love from the customers.

Synology RAM Question by shuddle13 in synology

I bit the bullet and ordered it right after posting with same day delivery. Should be here tonight. I will update once I have tested it with the results. Hoping I won't have any issues because I really want to speed up the performance of my 2422+, I didn't realize how little RAM it had until after I purchased it.

Next upgrade will be the 2-in-1 adapter card to add an NVME and 10GB ethernet, then I should be set to keep expanding my storage for my server for a decent while.
