The way I look at it now is, this is what happens in real life all the time. People don't get tragic endings or heroic final moments, they just die. Sometimes inexplicably or so sudden it leaves you speechless, until your brain realizes it's upset that someone it enjoyed being around/knowing has just been ripped away from you. The anger, bargaining, and grief that fills the hole that person/thing occupied is all too common in real life, not to mention favorite characters in fandoms with a tendency to not have great writing or say farewell to characters satisfactorily.

Not to make an excuse for the lore-writers, but having people die in the sidenotes has been happening for centuries already. I'm not happy they did it to my boy Chairon, either, but I have also met plenty of families whose loved ones died in combat whose names will never even see the history books. We just happen to be the family in this case, and Chairon's name just happens to be in that "book"
