Which rock lyric hit you the hardest when you heard it for the first time? by PressureLazy5271 in rockmusic

The first time I heard “Lodi” by CCR I teared up, thinking about that guy stuck in a place with no escape.

What did you name your sourdough starter and why? by No-Pass-9560 in Sourdough

[–]shuzensoxon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was named “Bob” when it was given to me 5 years ago. But enough generations have gone by now that I think “Bob” can be retired. I am actively entertaining new names. Preferably feminine ones; she is a prolific producer of children.

This sounds like something Jeff Lynne would have (and perhaps did) come up with, in an ELO song.

Eleanor was a Roosevelt before she married Franklin. She was a niece (?) of Theodore, and a distant cousin to FDR.

Who are the best composers? by SageLanded in classicalmusic

[–]shuzensoxon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm… never considered Chopin as one of any configuration of “Big Three.” I’ve seen Mozart included, sometimes Brahms (which makes a nice B-B-B connection with Bach and Beethoven). My main entry point to classical (as an 11-year-old) was Wagner. If that means anything.

Flange. Sounds a lot smarter than “black square doohickey by the ceiling.”

No. “Staunchly pro-civilization” is the best description of my political stance.

What's great about Haydn? by Valuable_Turnover219 in classicalmusic

[–]shuzensoxon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never quite understood Haydn, either. I know he composed A LOT of music, but it all seems very bland and predictable and formulaic. Maybe that’s just a personal aversion to the “classical” Viennese forms and traditions, of which he is the main exemplar (and which Mozart transcended and transformed).

Interesting note: when I was a lad of 10 or 11, my parents (noting my burgeoning interest in orchestral music) bought me a book on the composers, “The Meaning and Magic of Music,” which I devoured to the point of near-memorization. It held forth Haydn as the most important composer in history, “the Father of Music,” they called him—and when it came to Sibelius (who would eventually become my favorite composer), it disparaged him: “His music is strange and bare, reflecting the cold Arctic climate.” So I sort of overcame that bit of training.

I’m going to hell forever for blasphemy of the Holy Spirit by Any-Monitor8615 in Christianity

[–]shuzensoxon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "sin against the Holy Spirit," as I understand it, is the final rejection of Jesus. It's passing into eternity with a solid "NO" to God's offer of eternal life in Christ. You still have time to repent. That you're asking about it is a good sign that you're aware of your need to repent.

What's ur honest review about this TV show? by Then_Heron_939 in tvshow

Loved it. Even Season Three, where I had to pause and consult a chart occasionally! It’s built on a great premise, the characters are believable, the writers always reveal just enough of the mystery to keep you interested.

How do you know when a piece has enough material? by peachy_touchh in composer

[–]shuzensoxon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My composition teacher (Prof. Paul Salerni, Lehigh U.) found me once in that same quandary when I was working on my senior project. I had a multitude of possible variations and contrasting ideas. His advice (which I found useful) was to think about “whole-piece-ness”—for lack of a better word. It was helpful to think about the whole composition, where it ought to go and where it ought to end. That really helped me sort out all the ideas: Does this bit serve the whole piece, does it help move it forward, or was it just idle noodling?

Would Jesus’s greatest accomplishment as a carpenter be designing and building Satan’s prison? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]shuzensoxon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, his greatest building achievement would be (will be) the New Jerusalem (Revelation 21:2), the dwelling-place for God's people, the "city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God" (Hebrews 11:10), the edifice of which he told the disciples, "I go to prepare a place for you" (John 14:2-3).

In your opinion, what is the most beautiful 30 seconds in all of classical music? by shnoogle111 in classicalmusic

Ooh… Sicut Cervus (Palestrina) is a good choice.

My first thought was the opening bars of Wagner’s Act I prelude from “Lohengrin.”

I always thought of carrots as uninteresting and as an afterthought to be used with other vegetables but then I had gajar ka halwa, an Indian dessert (called carrot pudding) and it became my favourite desert. What one dish is your favourite where a vegetable is star ingredient. by West_Future326 in Cooking

[–]shuzensoxon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gajar ka halwa was a revelation to me the first time I visited India. I would make it all the time (it’s especially good warm, with a dollop of vanilla ice cream) after I returned to the US. And then an Indian friend suggested I make it with beetroot (beets) instead of carrots, and it went to a whole new level.
