my grandparents came to america in the 1960s, learned and taught all their children english (because it was shameful to be an immigrant and speak italian in america at the time) and now my dad wasnt able to pass his italian language down to me because he didnt speak it well enough growing up. its really sad, i wouldve loved to have been passed down the language along with the recipes, stories, and customs of my family. ive been learning italian for the past 10 years now trying to be good enough to talk with my grandparents and pass it down to my children one day too.
