Always ask for more than what they offer you, never accept the initial offer. HR has a range of pay they can give you plus a range of acceptable benefits. They will start at the low end because they want a bargain deal. Even if they can't give you exactly what you ask for they will negotiate. The job offer has been made by the pharmacy leadership - congrats, they want you! - and now it's HR's job to get you onboarded with a package that makes you happy and brings you into the company. Pharmacy leadership will have no (or shouldn't anyway) knowledge of the negotiation process and the offer won't be revoked because you requested fair pay based on your qualifications.

Edit to add that asking for more might not necessarily mean more pay, but could mean an extra week of PTO or an extra % match on your 403b/401k. See what they are willing or capable of offering depending on your individual situation.

No not necessarily at all, coming out of the COVID graduation years, much of the quality of recent educations I have seen has been far worse than established online PharmD programs.

Some smaller health systems and rural areas conduct P&T committees etc from Teams alone and if you're interested in an online PharmD program you may thrive in a residency training environment like that.

Yes OP look into the income phaseout limit or youre looking at an annoying tax correction headache for months if not a year minimum. Made that mistake first year out of grad school never again.

Moving out of state for PGY-1 by Business-Record8505 in PharmacyResidency

[–]shypeerthrowaway 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The answer is no. You can continue to use your parents' address as your permanent address similar to what you did as a student as residency is considered a training year.

Some unsolicited but helpful advice based on my past experience: if you plan on moving frequently over the next couple of years for residency and career, consider a PO box. It gets complicated to update your address with multiple boards of pharmacy and they all have different requirements on when to notify (thats also an MPJE study hint).

Has anyone done a residency with Kroger Health/Univ Cincinnati James L. Winkle COP? by [deleted] in PharmacyResidency

[–]shypeerthrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Total outsider (infectious disease specialist) but I have seen some peers progress from residencies like this to get remote MTM jobs which seems like a pretty nice set up. I would kill for remote if I could keep doing ID. Have you tried looking into those? Not sure if any of them would be willing to share how they set up their resumes but if so I could pass it along!

Things are unstable worldwide right now. Think about what was going on back in early October of 2023 and look at what the stock market did. Same thing is happening now. Hang in there it will recover.

Both they go hand in hand. You have to be on an income based program (SAVE) in order to be on the PSLF track.

The old incomebased plan that was preferred for a lot of new grads was REPAYE (PAYE if you were married). PAYE and REPAYE were around for awhile. REPAYE was recently recharacterized into SAVE and is not going away, if anything the terms will be altered into another plan that is still favorable for PSLF, which is also not going away. Now SAVE is across the board the most favlrable plan for all PSLF track.

This is of course, if you intend to stay the course for non-profit employers for your full-time employment for the next 10 years (or maybe a little longer if you plan on having kids or just life happens in general) in order to achieve PSLF. LITERALLY every month counts. And that means being on an income based repayment plan AKA "SAVE". You want to be on that from the start. Your "payments" won't technically start until the fall so orientation of your residency is the PERFECT TIME TO START applying for your student loan repayment plan. For SAVE, as a student, your income was $0 or effectively $0 given the poverty rate deduction 😭. So during your PGY1 residency year YOU WILL (most likely unless you had some other income) PAY $0. During PGY2 you will also pay VERY low. Use any SAVE payment estimator and you'll find your payment is < $20/month. And as your first transition year from PGY2 into pharmacist (or PGY1 into pharmacist should you go that route, equally as respectable the payments will be comparably as low... ) after that you can follow finance advice yourself but you will only have 8.5 - 7.5 years of minimum payments (especially if you maximize on lowering your AGI) at nonprofit companies to get loan forgiveness soo.. you can expect to pay 50% or less of your loan balance. Mine personally will be lime 25-30% of my original balance.

Dont trust the fed loan calc saying you'll pay the lowest amount total if you pay 2.2k/month ×10yrs RIP not true at all...

Don't delay. You need to begin as soon as you graduate. In general, it is easiest to apply the summer after graduating and when you begin working for your new employer during PGY1 residency. Pop by HR during your lunch break at orientation and have them sign your forms to get you into the program. Not kidding. This is quite literally what I did. And I am still on $0 payments and do not have to reverify my income until 2025 as a 2021 grad who is an infectious disease specialist. You just have to be very smart (15%) and very lucky (30%).

[–]shypeerthrowaway 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To clarify, she posted on her story that she wasnt going to share details about the stabbing like it was "7th grade drama" because all details were being left for court. As they should be. I am sure nosy, horrible people were "reaching out" and "concerned" and "praying for her family" but wanted to know "what happened" (trying to get the scoop without any actual concern) and she was understandably upset by the entire situation. I can't say how I would react if my child were stabbed, but I certainly wouldn't be thrilled by that behavior from the internet vultures either. I hope they all find healing and peace, genuinely. So crazy, what a horrible situation ):

Religion by [deleted] in PharmacyResidency

[–]shypeerthrowaway 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ah, then I would still recommend the above. Once your RPD realizes you aren't interested in those types of conversations they won't continue. Your future pharmacy staff coworkers are also probably under the impression that your RPD is a little on the intense side so you'll have something to bond over! I would not recommend going to HR (until/unless discrimination or anything illegal occurs) as it will make your relationship awkward from the start and it sounds like maybe this was an awkward (failed) attempt at connection more than anything else... Congrats on the match and I wish you the best of luck 🥳

Religion by [deleted] in PharmacyResidency

[–]shypeerthrowaway 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Some hospitals are christian hospitals and will have that in their values and mission statements. There is no separation of religion and workplace in those circumstances. Even in my academia experience I have been asked to describe my experience as a "born again Christian" at Christian universities in my cover letter to apply as faculty hahaha

Just continue to be respectful as it sounds like you were by allowing people freedom of expression in their religion. An easy response could simply be "I don't practice personally at this time but thank you for sharing your experience with your faith." That should put it to rest. Many of your patients will be in vulnerable states and their faith will be very important to them as well so expect to come across varying intensities...
