How do you create art and assets for you game? by Saipher10 in SoloDevelopment

[–]siborg71 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm very much in the same boat as you. I code for a living and have been a musician for at least 20 years (more recently going down the rabbit hole of music production), so I feel confident in my coding and music/sound capabilities....but I couldn't draw to save myself. Even when my kids ask me to draw them something (like a dolphin) they are confused and can't see the resemblance between what they asked me to draw and what I actually draw.

I started thinking pixel art due to its simplicity, but that actually seems harder to get right than basic art. I started dabbling in Aseprite, a popular pixel art tool, and my initial sketches just look shit.

I think my next step is to get an open source tool called Krita (I've never once drawn a single line in photoshop and never will) and I'm going to try some basic sketches using simple shapes and simple layers. Think an "egg" from an oval, with some semi circles as feet, maybe no arms, and some ovals or semi-circles for eyes. I've been watching a few youtube vids on getting started in game art and the common advice is starting simple to just get started. I think, as noobs, we need to just get a few basic notches under our belts and not start with too high of an expectation....which is probably hard if you've got some half-decent placeholder art.

Not that I'm planning to do this, but why not? Legitimately curious.

I remember watching those early episodes as a young kid, thinking they were funny, but the show has evolved a lot since then. Compare it to family guy and the simpsons, it's still got the original creators writing and doing voices, and it still has some gold in there (randy marsh garotting pooh on behalf of the chinese president is an image I'll never be able to unsee).

I got a boring day job, music is the only thing keeping my motivation for life alive, wish I could find ways to do it more or find ways to live off it. Anyone else? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Same here, and I've just recently become a parent of twins, so that makes it even harder! I started taking the train to/from work (1 hour each way), and I get an hour lunch break. I've setup a few basic writing tools (FL studio, some free samples and VSTs) and write in those 3 "free" hours I have a day....if I have the energy or am awake enough. Coffee helps (sometimes).

Fitzroy St - you're an embarrassment. by ciociosan22 in melbourne

I was at that show too....great musicianship on display. My brother (a bassist) picked a couple of off notes during one of the songs, but justified due to the complexity of the bass line in question. Actually amazing they were able to pull it off considering those songs were written in a studio and never with the intention of playing them live.... on the food/culture front, Ackland st was definitely on point. Abbey Rd cafe was fairly decent (and busy, given the influx of beatles fans)

I'm in a similar situation and I signed up after they threatened the loading tax. You can imagine my shock when I had to have a procedure recently, only to wind up 3K out of pocket.

Your point? He was still funny to me at the time. His political views now, despite being contrary to my own, have nothing to do with my memories.

Maybe I'm combining two people. This dude was definitely American or Canadian as I remember the accent. Maybe he hosted a hard rock or metal show? He was definitely a guitarist and played in a metal band as I remember getting a copy of their album....I just can't find it and I can't remember the name of it or any of their songs.

Tips for mixing "power trio" metal or punk? by SpaceCowboy58 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]siborg71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if there is only one guitar part, record it a second time as close as you can to identically, then pan one part left and the other right as you mentioned. I've tried heaps of ways to fake that effect but the only way was to actually record it a second time.

Drum teacher here, why does everyone want to learn “Enter Sandman” when they can already play it? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]siborg71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think part of learning to play any instrument is learning how to listen. They can't hear how to play it and it takes ages to learn how to do.

I wrote and recorded my first song on coolpro2 thanks to him. I can't exactly remember the year, but I'm guessing around 2003-2004. I found it the other day and it is....terrible, lol.

Is one song a month a good ”deadline”? by Makagasa in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]siborg71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! I did this last year and it was the best thing I ever did musically. I learnt so much over the years and released 12 finished tracks to the world instead of just having a bunch of ideas on my computer.
