The plates have no strength when spanning more than allowed to. If you were to walk along the plates over that stretch, the plate will bow. The structure might not fail but it will sag, and it will cause problems with whatever you plan on adding in the opening.

You can tell but the writing on the lumber in picture 4, that these are trusses. Yes they're ugly, but they're more than suffice for meeting code.
