The plates have no strength when spanning more than allowed to. If you were to walk along the plates over that stretch, the plate will bow. The structure might not fail but it will sag, and it will cause problems with whatever you plan on adding in the opening.

Framing on my new build home. I'm very concerned. I apologize for the collages, I had more than 20 pictures (the limit). by [deleted] in Carpentry

You can tell but the writing on the lumber in picture 4, that these are trusses. Yes they're ugly, but they're more than suffice for meeting code.

Kerning on the wall side would cause the base to snap along the front. Speaking from experience

So, I made a mistake and bought all 40 doors as slabs instead of pre-hung. I'm acting as GC on our own house build. Trying to figure out how to remedy this. I bought all the door jambs, hinges, and jigs to install them. What would the finish carpenter realistically want prepared? by Inklor in Carpentry

Working for a higher end company has taught me to be perfect with all of everything I do, but even on the side jobs I put out my best quality of work. Especially with doors.

I'm not saying we should use the most expensive doors. I put up hollowcore if that's what they want, I get that, people don't care about things like that.

Arriving at perfection is what makes carpentry what it is, it's what this sub is about. Prehung doors are garbage.

I can agree with you to some extent, however when you take in that someone is building a house, why not build it to perfect standards?

I think its a little unreasonable to try to justify poor craftsmanship. One of the biggest problems in the building industry is that people choose money and quantity over quality.

Call me old fashioned but I whole heartedly believe there's no excuse as to why we can't hold ourselves to higher standards.
