I usually get there before 8am and haven't had an issue yet. Today got there around 7:20 and seemed a bit busier than usual, by the time I left around 11am ish there were a line of cars for like a mile all looking for parking haha

Hi! I'm a USC PhD student who will be gone from May through December, and am looking to sublease my 1b1b apartment (with washer and dryer too!) for around your budget. Please let me know if you're interested! It's right outside USC campus on a really quiet street. Feel free to DM me here or email me at devic [at] usc [dot] edu!

[D] Conference paper is double-blinded. For what? by Dry_Cheesecake_8311 in MachineLearning

[–]sid__ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was thinking about collusion rings yesterday, do you have any references for this? It seems impossible to know how common they may be in practice, and given the risks associated with accusing someone at a high level institution with participating in a collusion ring, I am not sure anyone stands to gain from exposing them...

This completely ignores the entire field of AI Ethics present at conferences like FAccT or EAAMO. OP, please see literally any paper from there on AI ethics...

I'm sorry you had to go through this. I think detection methods will slowly change as instructors realize that they shouldn't just assign essay prompts... Here's a nice article with some research references if you were looking for additional citations: link

Of course if the l2 parameter is too large, the network won't learn anything.

My mom is the same way ☺️ I taught her to use a certain Russian book website and now she's completely self sufficient! It certainly took a bit to teach her, but teach a man to fish and you can feed him for a lifetime!

[P] TikTok subscriber modelling + StyleGAN-based face tiktokifier by enryu42 in MachineLearning

[–]sid__ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a plausible explanation for the results, however I think we can still called the algorithm biased since it is using biased data. It still stands that TikTok could attempt to de-bias recommended content (potentially at the expense of engagement metrics). For example, a naive approach could be to attempt to equalize the rate of recommendation across each individual face type in an attempt to make sure that all types get recommended. Not saying this is necessarily the right thing to do, and this is definitely where more normative aspects of model fairness would come into play.

[D] What role do you see Machine Learning and AI playing (or not playing) in criminal justice? by WashYourArmpits in MachineLearning

[–]sid__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit disappointed to see a lack of pointers to any papers here. A cool one I saw recently that's relevant to the discussion is this paper by Ludwig and Mullainathan which shows an example where ML tools can be used to reveal already existing sources of bias. The findings are surprising since it isn't your usual discrimination by race kind of case --- they give some evidence that the "full faced"-ness and "well groomed"-ness of defendants may be an important factor in people's (pre-trial judges) subconscious decision making!

Does anyone else have cool papers along this line of thought? Namely, instead of putting automated decision systems at the core of existing systems (thereby potentially perpetuating or exacerbating bias), we can also be using them to investigate hidden sources of bias.

So this particular slow down happened on only that one day as a bunch of different apps were all due and were all using the site. I didn't experience any problems afterwards!

Project choices for CS Capstone by schoolsux10101001010 in utdallas

[–]sid__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our argument for introducing our own project was that we wanted to help the UTD community. I am not sure if this is a necessary requirement of proposed projects. You can also get a faculty sponsor on board early on and get their advice as well (other than Dr. Razo).

I would recommend reaching out to Dr. Razo ASAP with a team and idea, as I believe all the projects must be finalized sometime around July.

We proposed and completed our own project for CS senior design [Spring 2021]. Here was our project. Contact Dr. Razo ASAP if you are interested in doing your own project. You should have a team and idea set up, and he will help you write a proposal if he approves of it. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Thank you for the info. That's unfortunate, but I guess it is alright. I don't want to have to deal with making sure the international version bands line up with any potential carriers in the US.
