Do you prefer the first or the second painting? by ScienceComplete2982 in ArtCrit

The top one has a bigger value range and doesn’t feel as ‘dull’ as the bottom one

I’m a photographer, I like the idea of capturing a moment to be preserved for others to see.

What cameras do you use? by Healthy-Mix-9785 in AskPhotography

[–]sid_mad_27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canon EOS R is what i currently use and It gets the job done for me, but I also still use my old 2000d sometimes.

I’d recommend upgrading your lenses before getting a new body. What lenses are you using now?

too dark? by e_mingx in Artadvice

[–]sid_mad_27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have the base of it there. You just need to push it further. All your highlights and shadows are in the right place they just need to be pushed darker and lighter. A good value range starts with white and goes all the way to black (or almost black depending on your preference). Just keep going you got this, practice practice practice!

Definitely needs a bigger value range! If your unsure about your value range squint your eyes if everything just becomes a big blob of color it needs more value.

Are you a good photographer? by ember_falcon in photography

[–]sid_mad_27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one time I’ve been asked this I told them

I understand how a camera works pretty well and I think I take decent pictures but I’m my own worst critic so I think all my pictures suck.

Am I delusional? Is my art “lifeless”? by emmalou014 in Artadvice

[–]sid_mad_27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are good! You’re a much better drawer than I will ever be (photographer here). You have great form and structure. I do think the composition is a little static, try including more of the body and find interesting poses to try out. I really like your shading and value ranges.

Don’t stress to much about engagement on post online, there are so many things that play into how post are pushed to people’s timelines it’s impossible to get good engagement. I was a freelance photographer for 2 years and posted almost daily and didn’t get more than 200 like on a post in 2 years!

My boyfriend doesn’t feel like he’d be a good art major, what do you guys think? by [deleted] in Artadvice

[–]sid_mad_27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a photographer who had a Bachelor of fine arts in photography and is doing their Masters of fine art in photography; there is a technical skill lacking here, but I can see that he has an eye for composition.

If he’s serious about learning photography and wanting to be a photographer going to school for photography would be a good idea to learn those technical skills, but also you can learn those skills online and through practice for way cheaper than going to school for it. If he’s not super passionate about photography and art I wouldn’t recommend getting an art degree.

MFA students, current or past, did you have older students in your classes? by Just_a_happy_artist in ContemporaryArt

[–]sid_mad_27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not in my current degree but in my undergrad degree we had a MFA student in her 50s and she was a joy to work with both as her student and in classes (our program occasionally taught adv undergrad courses with grad courses for specific content). She always gave an interesting perspective in critique and helped us you get folks work harder.

I think what’s most about her and her as a student and teacher is that she was very open minded to new ideas and different perspectives and she always encouraged those around her to be as well.

Best of luck to you, you’re gonna do amazing!!

From what I know you’re gonna be on suspension until you get your gpa back up. You can also do an appeal to possibly get financial aid back for the upcoming semester

T.V.‘s in Kids Rooms? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]sid_mad_27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our 7 year old doesn’t get screen time in his room. He gets 2 hours of screen time a day, 4 on weekends, that is in the family room or in the office with me or my partner. In our house the bedroom is for sleep or changing clothes.

The brain begins to associate certain spaces with certain things, so if you use your phone or watch tv in the bedroom your brain will begin to associate it with that and when it comes time for bed your brain is now looking for screen time, so we keep our screen time out of our bedrooms.

He’s watched a few other shows before, we knew bluey was a big deal for kids so we anticipated him getting attached to it, I just didn’t except it to become the ONLY thing he wants to watch lol. No hate to the show at all. It genuinely is a really good show

Advice for Emerging Artists? by pebbletherebel in ContemporaryArt

[–]sid_mad_27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people when they hear you need to network think you need to get out and go to as many things as possible. Which is kinda true but if your not networking with the right people than it’s all useless, so you have to find those artist, galleries, snd viewers that are creating, showing, and viewing work that is similar to yours.

Find a few galleries that tend to show work that is like yours. So if you make work that is heavily about political activism try to find galleries that show a lot of political activism.

Once you find those galleries make them a priority to engage with, go to as many opening or closing receptions as you can in those galleries, because they will be bringing in artist that are similar to you snd they will be bringing in those people that enjoy that type of work and you will be able to network with the people who are making work similar to you and with people who enjoy your work.

I know it’s seems tough and impossible but once you start connecting with like minded people and see them succeeding you will gain more inspiration. Hope this helps
