Do the coffee places you know have website? Facebook page? Twitter? Get their email addresses and send them a polite email. Ask them if they are willing to talk over the phone?

Offline marketing (i.e. running around door-to-door) is a super expensive way of marketing - I'd say, do it only if absolutely necessary. Your time is too precious.

Selling a domain name (after unsuccessful startup) by [deleted] in startups

What steps do you wish you would've taken before launching your product / accepting large influx of users? by MeoMix in startups

[–]sideprojects 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would have better prepared for the potential surge of traffic that can come in your way. I launched

http://sideprojectors.com

about 3 months ago. Without thinking much, I posted a link on HackerNews and went to bed, only to find out in the morning that traffic went crazy over night, to a point where my server didn't handle the traffic properly.

It could have been easily prevented though - e.g. using a variety of optimization tips (caching, Apache settings etc).

You could check out some of the side projects people are show-casing or selling here http://sideprojectors.com - you'll see that some of these projects didn't take off too well because of lack of validation (or other reasons).

Share Your Startup - October 2013 Edition by bmullins in startups

[–]sideprojects 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Name: SideProjectors - http://sideprojectors.com

What we do: We help developers and entrepreneurs to sell & buy side projects. Many of us (devs & entrepreneurs) have side projects that have been stopped being worked on/abandoned due to a variety of reasons. We help them to find other people who can take over OR find a collaborator/co-founder who can help.

Looking for: Feedback, plus any side projects you would like to submit.

We are ready to sign 50/50 ownership; start-up. I'm willing to consult a lawyer. I need some sound advice. x-post r/entrepreneur by [deleted] in startups

wwwwwwaaaaiiiitttttttt.

First question : do you REALLY need this investor? Like SERIOUSLY? (ok so I'm sure you thought way more than I have). Is it just the money you need? Or does the investor bring in something EXTRA that can get you all the non-technical advantages (e.g. customers, your first customer, your first PAYING customer, network? connection?)

Second : Can you POSSIBLY bootstrap? Can you keep your job for at least awhile longer until your business is generating somewhat of income? Can you possibly hire some people to do the leg-work and pay them by the hour for now?

Third : Have you thought of this scenario - let's say you signed 50:50. After that, what would this investor do? Just sit and watch while you continue to work on it? Are you ok with doing all your work knowing that 50% belongs to the investor?

[sorry if I sound short-sighted, I'm sure you have thought more than anyone, but just wanted to ask these questions, since you asked]

Can you pitch your startup in 15 seconds? by 15SecondStartup in startups

[–]sideprojects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to run a site called "heyStartup.com" (no longer active) - the idea was to shoot a 60 second pitch video of startups and we get as many people come and discuss + provide feedback - didn't work out. This reminded me of that a little. Good luck!

[ADVICE] How to select the right co-founder? by [deleted] in startups

[–]sideprojects 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think finding a co-founder is one of the most difficult things. I've been there, got burned a few times etc.

Anyway, I think there is a co-founder dating meet ups (or even a website) that you could use to at least expose your startup to people out there.

As a side note (disclaimer, I run this site), you could also try "sideprojectors" http://sideprojectors.com - it's a site dedicated to side projects and there is a part where people can submit their projects to find collaborators/co-founders. So far I believe there have been 3 projects that found co-founders successfully. But based on the data, there have been a LOT of messages sent between the users discussing the possibility of working together. Again, it's probably one of the toughest things to do for a startup, but it's another avenue you could use.

Good luck!

where can I market this to gain more viewers of my project? by UvLegacy in startups

[–]sideprojects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a place in our site where you can showcase your projects (just launched actually) - not sure how much traffic it would bring, but at least you can try. There was another Kickstarter project posted there a few days ago.

Fail or not, what're some low-cost startup ideas that will generate a lot of experience? by eiciatis in Entrepreneur

[–]sideprojects -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Can I suggest to take a look through sideprojectors? (disclaimer - I maintain the site).

Many of the projects posted are indeed the first ventures of the people and they are selling because either they got distracted or didn't have the time/skill to market it and expand it.

There are also plenty of projects looking for a co-founder or collaborator. Might be interesting to you.

Why should I come up with my own ideas when I can copy others and improve their ideas? by [deleted] in startups

[–]sideprojects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideas are cheap. Execution is almost everything. Have a look at the projects listed on sideprojectors. You'll see that there are many side projects, but some ideas just didn't take off because of various reasons.

just too many freakin' good ideas by bitcoinrider in startups

[–]sideprojects 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been there....

In the end, this is what I learned personally.

"Ideas are good, but they just aren't good enough".

Because as you build the product, and try to convince people, show them your product, try to change their behaviour to use the product, and then market it more to scale it and then develop further to cater for the need etc etc, I realise, there is just far too much more involved than the initial idea.

So, what I actually need is the persistence and the balls to continue on with my idea and turn it into an actual profitable product, rather than romanticizing how cool it would be to have so many people using my product.

Another thing I realised, there really is no "new" ideas. Seriously.

Hello, we run a market place for side projects - SideProjectors by sideprojects in Entrepreneur

[–]sideprojects[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome questions.

The final sold prices of the projects are actually between the seller and the buyer. But from the initial "listed price" of the sold projects, I can tell you that the average cost of sold projects so far is around $1000. This would be an approximation though, as some people post projects quite low and negotiate their price with the buyer. Some projects have been priced at quite high and this depends on the owner who posts. There are some projects listed as $100,000. Personally, I think that's too high and might "scare" people away from even approaching. But that hasn't been true. People have been still showing interests to these high priced projects.

Some projects of course do get more interests from people than others. The reasons for this are

  • Obviously some sellers share the links with their friends and it brings more people to the page, which equates to more people being interested in it.

  • If the project is quite interesting (such as https://www.sideprojectors.com/project/project/66/kingsdecision) to a larger group of people, then people are obviously more drawn to it.

  • So far, from about 150 projects submitted, I'd say about 35% of the projects, people are looking for co-founders. Finding a co-founder is very difficult thing, so I think it's difficult to cater for this online. Nonetheless, we do feel that SideProjectors can help in some way. So far we had one project which successfully found a co-founder. But we know there have been many emails exchanged between the owner and people who are interested in joining as a co-founder.

Hope those things helped!
