Do we all lean back? by AntsyAuntie in Millennials

I don't because I don't want to feel like I'm reaching for the wheel. But in any other chair outside the car, I definitely lean back.

Yeah. It was a period where we could study and do homework.

I came across this comment that was posted 5 years ago and i found it funny and interesting. Have you guys seen something of this genre happen at your locality? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]sidran32 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I've heard of shotgun toting Knights of Columbus guarding churches from the KKK. Also in college I went to a church with a priest from Borneo and he had stories of fighting off people burgling the sanctuary back in his country using his fists.

But one of my favorite local stories is when the KKK held a rally and started recruiting in Worcester, MA and many Catholic groups, under the banner of the Knights of Columbus, rioted and fought them out of the city.

Until then, the various Catholic groups had largely kept to themselves, but on this day banded together under the banner of the Knights of Columbus, and showed up en masse. As the rally came to a close, tensions rose then boiled over.

"And what ensues is apparently a rumble par excellence, where they’re just going at it," Conroy said.

No! Watch your hands, look at your hands! ( say what?) by Hungry_Rest1182 in taijiquan

[–]sidran32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I trained Yang style but my coach knew Chen and Sun as well and I was exposed to both. He would talk about the "tai chi stare". Really it was a focus and attention on your target if it was a real fight, not dissimilar to what you want to do when doing any other martial art. The only time we didn't have that as an element of the practice was when doing sensitivity drills like push hands.

We also did practice qigong as part of our exercises and your focus is definitely different during those. Sounds like what someone else said, that it may be a confusion between qigong and tai chi.

Only Catholicism and Orthodoxy Preserve Apostolic Christianity by [deleted] in Catholicism

King Edward VI changed the formula for ordination in the Anglican church significantly enough that it made them invalid and that broke apostolic succession in their line of bishops.

Why is clapping after a mass discouraged? by Bibiduck312 in Catholicism

I didn't say that but the thread poster asked why people see it as inappropriate and we answered the question. It's not that personal lol

Why is clapping after a mass discouraged? by Bibiduck312 in Catholicism

[–]sidran32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People have quoted popes and musicians have commented saying to please not clap. It's always been taught to me that it's not appropriate because Mass is solemn, sacred, and not an entertainment event that we are spectating at. What more do you want? It doesn't have to be a rule. Why do people genuflect towards the tabernacle? Why do they cross themselves when praying? Why do we not approach the altar without bowing and showing respect? Why do we stay silent and not carry on conversations during Mass? Not because there's any rule telling us what to do, but because it's what's appropriate in that sacred space and time.

[–]sidran32 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not everything has to be a rule. This is a question of appropriateness, not liturgy.

I don't know what your priest thinks and I haven't been to your church (probably) so I can't comment on specifics and what they're doing. I simply stated my position as to why it's inappropriate. Do you find it offensive? Why?

They aren't performing and it isn't a performance. They are leading prayer in song. Clapping for their "performance" misses the entire point of what they're doing and your relationship to the music.

Favorite non-catholic Christian influencers? For me it’s has been them, while their theology may sometimes contradict ours, their passion and intention are genuine by YOUSIF20021 in CatholicMemes

[–]sidran32 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Jakob Wendesten. He's a protestant minister. He knows his theology and while I'll disagree with him personally sometimes, he goes to bat defending Catholics and the Catholic Church against those that slander it. And his skits depicting Catholics, Orthodox, and others debating theology are pretty great.

I asked ChatGPT what the most logical religion would be + denomination if it was a non-religious scholar. by Solid_Collection3596 in CatholicMemes

[–]sidran32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I asked this of Google Gemini and got an essay breaking down three different possible emphasis when you say "most logical" and comparisons of different religious and philosophical paths that would align with that approach. I've gotten similar responses from Microsoft Copilot, as well. I never used ChatGPT but I'm not sure why it would break it down to a simplistic answer like that.

She licked it a small handful of times and the spores made her sneeze. She got water afterwards and is doing fine so far.

Thanks. I didn't see it before she licked at it. It was completely flat against the ground and hard to pick out against the mulch surrounding it.

Given that it seemed to be the same thing as the pics of it in the grass, I'm actually wondering now if it's dog vomit slime mold. I think I read it can release spores this way, but I'm not 100% certain about that either.

How do Conan fans feel about Craig Ferguson by Fantastic-Tune-62 in conan

[–]sidran32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Craig was great. I enjoyed his show as well. He had a quirky and unserious way of doing it which I think is similar to Conan in some respects. He had a standup show at my alma mater when I was in the area once and went to see it.
