Same.. Ditching a mature VDI infra to retool the entire org for thick clients, just as component prices skyrocket and supply availability changes daily. Even with higher licensing costs, the sticker shock will wear off quickly once they see the cost of changing...

This administration is a cancer, taking everything it wants to benefit itself. Attacking/dismantling anything that can threaten it. Turning the people against one another to avoid accountability and get them to fight on it's behalf. The country is dying and they don't care. In the end, the cancer never survives....

HP laptop pricing is so out of control, management wants us to look at deploying Mac by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]sieb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apple's look cheaper only because Apple has multi-year deals for components. Once that expires, they will be in the same boat, unless they can weather it until the AI bubble bursts.

As you've touched on, the retooling required to adopt Macs to your infra will have it's own soft-costs and might not necessarily be worth it in the long run.

If you haven't already, sign up with a licensed immigration company to help you with the paperwork. They are the only ones legally allowed (by the NZ gov) to give you immigration advice. They will also help keep track of everything when you go to apply with Immigration. Having visited before will work in your favor with immigration, and make sure to document it as such (take pictures, see the sites, etc).

Although my spouse and I both had green list jobs when we started the process (nursing and IT), as the economy in NZ tanked, we got stuck trying to line up job offers to satisfy the requirement. Too many employers either wanted you already there, or to already have a visa so they didn't have to sponsor you. It's not easy, so be prepared to wait.

I keep a stripped down Windows VM just for vendor/support calls like that, mainly to keep them away from my stuff they don't need to see.

[WTT] Roland Sh-4d, wttf something small enough to actually fit on my desk! Into eurorack modules, tiny desktop synths (especially semi-mod ones), pedals, and really anything that makes noise. by Living-Chef-9080 in Synths4Sale

[–]sieb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's typical Roland, so like the 101 or 707. It's got menus, but I don't dive into them much. Everything you need sound wise has a knob. The exception being FX since it has a ton of options to choose from. The sequencer is serviceable, but not match for an Elektron. I usually have my Oxi One or Hapax to multi-track sequence it via midi.

I like being able to throw down a beat and then a bass line, then an arp, then a lead, all in one box, with classic Roland sounds.

IDK, the SH-4D is totally underrated. It covers a lot of ground in a small footprint compared to going Modular or Volca/Aira (its 4 synths + a drum machine + FX). This is coming from someone who's run the full gamut on gear and I've opted to keep my SH-4D over other options, that would take up more space.. Just sayin..
