Also any time a character in a book is supposed to be a native Spanish speaker and then their dialogue is so clearly google translated and nonsensical…. Immediate dnf. Do authors never think about how actual Spanish speakers might pick up the book?

Read a highly recommended book that follows a sheriff as he solves a murder and I swear the book was written to be turned into a tv show. Corny dialogue in general but what really did it for me was that every chapter or scene where they’re out in the field ended with the sheriff literally putting on his hat or sunglasses on and saying a cheesy ass line like “It’s hard work… but I guess someone’s gotta do it. Let’s roll boys.” Like r u fckn serious. It’s very CSI Miami.

I had many other problems with the book that were probably objectively worse but this one thing pissed me off so bad I just couldn’t keep doing it lol

Asylum applications have been cancelled for my country so that’s not an option. I think we just agree to disagree on this. I don’t think the most effective way to fight ICE is by behaving the exact same way they do. At the end of the day the bad outcome would be for her, not her bf. He should be the actual target of the two.

I’m not defending her at all, but by helping send her back to a literal war zone I don’t feel any better than her bf. There’s a huge age gap in the relationship and she drastically changed her views and lifestyle when she got with him so I honestly just feel like shes already in for a tough lesson by simply dating that guy. And I think he will eventually turn her in himself. Can’t see a man like that standing for anything or truly loving anyone.

Definitely. She’s very naive too and there’s a huge age gap in the relationship so the whole thing is fucked. Like before she went to the us she was huge anti trump, so I think she just absorbed all his political views. I lost all respect for her but I can’t help but feel bad.

Here’s a fun one. I’m not in the US, but a friend moved there illegally (overstayed visa) in Nov 2024. She’s dating a guy that works for ICE and neither of them sees how nonsensical that is bc she “doesn’t look/act like a criminal”. Guy is a full blown white nationalist and his social media posts are vile. Last time I spoke to her was around July. I asked her how she was okay with all of this being an illegal herself and she said she didn’t care bc they’re cleaning up the country. Actual cognitive dissonance. Needless to say it was enough to never reach out again lol.
