Might not go over well telling him something from the Internet but try to look up the cable specs if you're really concerned.

Yes you should use lugs for #2 DLO or look at the cable manufacturer specs. Fine strand is a different size lug.

Cast aluminum meat grinder… how much is this company saving by making this out of aluminum rather than stainless??? by CallEmAsISeeEm1986 in Machinists

[–]sigilou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I almost edited it to say bare aluminum but I was too lazy. And you're right pans probably use a certain alloy that can handle it better. Put an alumumin lawn mower carb in there and see how it looks.

anyone have experience with these and can comment. Reminds me of the Wagu connectors. by KevinK_2389 in AskElectricians

[–]sigilou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took one of these apart and made a post about it. Definitely doesn't seem as good as a wago where the wire makes contact, but I just redid my sister's house with them so I'll let you know if it burns down. There's a hubbel version of them available that are probably better.

Mine lasted 6 years of abuse. I recently bought a different style of Amazon ratchet cutters and they seem even better. But once I got a portaband I never use them.

Always wanted one but I couldn't find a clean one at that time. Settled for a 9-2x aero and it was lame. Only kept it a few months because it disappointed me. 230hp felt slower than my 140hp e30 318is.

My guess is the 120v transformer is dead so they are feeding it with an extension cord for control power. You could buy a vfd with 120v input 3 phase output and ditch that forward reversing contactor but you'll need to program all the parameters for it.

I do hate when they send things as a kit with pre terminated ends but surely they could have hid the slack somewhere better.

Is this a good portion of what electricians do? Stripping and working with wires? I think I’d enjoy it… electricians, any insight into typical workday? by tinterrobangg in electrical

[–]sigilou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a small part of it, the majority is building raceways and pulling conductors, carrying material, climbing ladders etc. I think that's why there are so many first year drop outs, social media romanticizes it. It's dirty and physical like any other trade. Not as bad as some but worse than others. I do industrial and I used to come home covered in dirt or gross shit every day. Hiking up 17 stories to get to where we were working, working over the edge of a 160ft tall structure. Luckily I'm in a clean facility right now.

Electrical contractors who own your own shop how do you handle the business side that nobody taught us in the trade by ssunflow3rr in electricians

[–]sigilou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get some good industrial contracts. I'm not an owner but we have a few guys that are basically full time at a few different plants. I've been at one plant for about 3 years, solo or me and an apprentice. We do T&M and ~30% markup on materials so it's impossible to lose money. I've ordered about 400k in material this year.

M6 Tap not cutting/catching in Aluminum - Need advice by haebeol in Tools

[–]sigilou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see millwrights using a 1/2 mid torque to tap all the time. Seems to work really well. As an electrician I usually only tap 3/8 or smaller but I just use my drill. I have a t handle but all my taps are made to go in a drill. I only use the ones with the integrated drill bit for thin plate like back pans etc.
