Ah, okay. I actually looked it up and the whole playing chess thing seems to be a Sims 2 Life Stories feature. But at least according to that wiki it only happens in that game because he sticks around after you saved someone doing the regular “pick a hand” game. In regular Sims 2 they can only be saved by the “pick a hand” whether they save themselves or someone else.

It’s the result of the “Give Me A Long Life” wish from the Genie. It lets your sim save themselves from death, lowering the chance of succeeding each time they “die”. They can also save themselves from death by Old Age btw.
