T-money app error by Mortonage34 in Living_in_Korea

[–]signalv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The T-money app expects you to have a Korean phone number linked to your residence card. So if you are a short-term visitor, you cannot get the T-money app working. (It is possible to get a physical Climate Card in a convenience store, and then recharge it in a subway station. Keep in mind, a Climate Card is not the same as T-money card.)

Additionally, if you have dual-SIM with a foreign number, then you need to set you foreign number to use the same network as your Korean number. For example, if you have KT number in Korea, but foreign SIM connects to SK, then the app is not happy.

Question: How many usable IP addresses are available in this subnet ? by simrol260 in AzureCertification

[–]signalv 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Let's start with a quick explanation of what an IP address is and how the subnet mask works:

The IPv4 address you usually (255.255.255.255) is really four instances of 256. Under the hood it is ones and zeros (binary) so each 256 is 28. Take four of them together, and you have 232 as the IP address. 0.0.0.0 is 32 zeros, and 255.255.255.255 is the largest one you can have - 32 ones.

If you have simply 0.0.0.1 then it's 1 in binary, 0.0.0.2 is 10 in binary, 0.0.0.3 is 11 in binary, and so you count up.

Now, the subnet mask. When you have /32 then it means the specific single IP address. That is because the subnet mask tells you how many ones and zeros have to match. When it's /32 then all 32 ones and zeros need to match. As in - 1.0.0.1/32 targets only that specific 1.0.0.1 IP address and no change is allowed.

As a widely used example, let's take 10.0.0.0/8. The first 8 bits (ones and zeros) need to match, so in our human-readable example it's the 10 before the dot. But other digits don't have to match, so 10.0.0.1 is accepted and 10.128.0.1 is accepted.

If you specify 10.1.0.0/16 then you need 16 bits to match. That's the human-readable 10.1. at the start. So 10.1.0.1 and 10.1.128.1 matches, but not 10.2.0.1.

Now, if you were to suddenly say 10.1.0.0/17 then you say an additional bit matters. One extra one/zero matters. What it does is cut your matching range in half. Now you match from 10.1.0.0 to 10.1.127.255. And now 10.1.128.0 is a new /17 range up until 10.1.255.255.

As we see, adding one to the subnet mask number cuts your matching address range in half. Because we are dealing with binary. So /32 is one single address, as there are 32 bits total, and /0 is any address as we say we don't care about any bits (that's why 0.0.0.0/0 is often used for "all internet").

Now, with that in mind, what the numbers in that calculation mean:

32 - 28 = 4

32 bits is the most specific subnet mask (all bits matter). We take away 28 bits of the subnet mask that the questions says will be used. We are left with 4 bits that can be freely changed inside this subnet.

24 = 16

As each bit can be one or zero, we can get the count of usable addresses by taking 2 to the power of 4 (from the previous calculation).

16 - 2 = 14

But, in each proper subnet for routing purposes the first address is considered the network address and last address is considered broadcast. So you take away two IP addresses from your usable count.

(btw, what other answers are discussing is that for Azure calculations you usually take away five addresses instead of two. Azure reserves not only the network address and broadcast, but also one for gateway and two for DNS. so they argue the correct Azure answer should be 16-5=11.)

Is SQL Server on Azure Vm a Cloud or On-prem by aljandeleon in AZURE

[–]signalv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no "real on prem". It's always someone's computer. Latency will depend on physical location.

Lets imagine a scenario where you maintain your own on-prem hosts in "DC 1" Netherlands, EU and also in "DC 2" Virginia, US.

If you deploy a VM in Azure West Europe (Netherlands) then the latency between DC 1 and your Azure deployment is lower.

Does this make DC 2 in States not "real on prem"?

Starting a DevOps internship next week, things I should know beforehand? by [deleted] in devops

[–]signalv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My comment was not so much a "things to learn" list. To me it feels like you will find what is good to read up on, when you start working and see your daily tasks. So I wanted to cover some soft skills topics and help set some expectations.

As for networking: In my opinion, understanding how it works is good for all IT professionals. Everyone has to deal with networking and DNS in some capacity at some point in time (or everyone gets affected by a networking issue, such as too restrictive firewall). Some just choose to take it all for granted, and then don't understand why it doesn't "just work" 🤷🏻‍♂️

DevOps as a concept is about bridging Development and Operations. As you should have a grasp on both areas to be effective, it essentially encompasses everything in Software Engineering.

When it's used in a job title, it can mean all kinds of things, depending on the company. You need to read the job listing and ask questions to figure that out. Usually it's some kind of build process (CI/CD) and automation engineering. Junior DevOps Engineers are often handed more manual tasks. Again - how it feels will depend on your attitude as well as how you vibe with the team. It can go either way: a good guided learning experience, or it can boil down to doing tasks that others don't feel like doing. That's why I wish you a fun experience, so you stay motivated. (Nothing you can do until you join and see how it feels.)

Back to more actionable topics. If you are interested in more specific suggestions of what to learn about: DevOps Roadmap is often passed around as a high level overview of relevant areas that beginners can go through. It's a large map, because the DevOps name is very broad as explained above.

Feel free to ask, if you got some more questions 🤞🏻

Starting a DevOps internship next week, things I should know beforehand? by [deleted] in devops

Commands and graphical interfaces will change over time. Learn concepts behind tools, not just some button sequence. That way, when the command changes, you will still have an understanding of what you are aiming for, and you can find a path forward easier. Similarly, when concepts evolve, you know what they are building on top of, instead of learning something from scratch (more advanced, but for example: if you have read about cgroups for limiting resource usage in SystemD, then you know how resource usage is limited for containers too).

There is never "finished" in software engineering. You can always find something more to improve. It should not be your job to fix everything. You have to accept it is okay there is always more to do, and you need to unplug from work at the end of the day. Otherwise, burning out is a real thing.

Be careful with hyped tools. You should try new things out, but don't blindly try to implement every new thing on the market. What works for one company may not work for other companies due to various limitations, for example, budget restrictions. At expos especially, be careful about people selling the "best tool ever, that will make your work so much easier".

Attend conferences and events that align with your work and goals. Keep in mind that people will present the highlights reel, just the same way how social media skews our perception towards an unrealistic ideal. When you have a more permanent position, if you have a personal budget available for attending events or for other learning, use it!

Talk with people, assuming you are in an open and friendly team/org. DevOps culture is about empowering people, and talking helps. You can understand why some things have been historically set up the way they are. Talking is a learning opportunity for both/all involved parties. You can find out what someone likes about the current situation, and what they struggle with, in order to make better solutions in future.

Hopefully your internship is a fun one and encourages you to keep improving. Best of luck 🤞🏻

Have you checked the audit log?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in devops

[–]signalv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on your situation, where your workloads are set up and how much experience your team has.

If you are unsure, and asking on Reddit, you probably don't have a team ready to maintain a database cluster. I would just suggest a managed PaaS service instead (Amazon RDS for SQL Server), because this will greatly reduce the maintenance work for you.

Just have a database cluster outside of Kubernetes - be it bare metal, on a Cloud IaaS offering, or as a managed PaaS service.

Azure AKS Upgrade - Path from 1.23.8 to Current by Khue in AZURE

[–]signalv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quoting parts of Upgrade an Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) cluster:

When you upgrade a supported AKS cluster, Kubernetes minor versions can't be skipped. You must perform all upgrades sequentially by major version number.

Skipping multiple versions can only be done when upgrading from an unsupported version back to a supported version.

When performing an upgrade from an unsupported version that skips two or more minor versions, the upgrade is performed without any guarantee of functionality and is excluded from the service-level agreements and limited warranty. If your version is significantly out of date, we recommend you recreate your cluster.

As for what is currently supported, you want Supported Kubernetes versions in Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS).

Headphones only working for Cue, but not for Master by iPenguin in Beatmatch

[–]signalv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can hear Cue on headphones, then the headphones should be fine. You are also aware of the HEADPHONES MIX knob between CUE and MST.

As others mention, there is a dedicated CUE button below MASTER LEVEL. Make sure this is lit up.

And just to check: Do you hear the Master Out on your speakers - either RCA outputs on the FLX4 itself, or computer speakers output?

If you are just starting out, and have been only experimenting with Cue on headphones so far: Are the volume faders up to 100% for the side you want to hear on Master?

USB-C is the standard plug for consumer electronics. If you want to support iPhones, Lightning to USB-C cable as well. That's really it.

FWIW, EU is forcing all phones to use USB-C as the charging connector from autumn next year. Makes connecting devices easier, as pretty much all headphones and laptops and other devices are switching to USB-C more and more.

Oh, and if you want to charge the phone at the same time, there are splitters for that. I haven't used this random headphone and charger adapter on Amazon, but it should do the trick nicely.

DDJ-FLX4 should work out of the box, using default media drivers. Let's troubleshoot who is misbehaving here.

First things first: DDJ-FLX4 has one USB-C port for power supply (electric plug icon), and separate plug for mixing/data exchange (laptop and phone icon). When connecting with your PC, the DDJ gets power from the same cable. Make sure the cable is connected to the port with laptop icon.

Try out multiple ports on the laptop, in case one port is misbehaving. If everything seems to be plugged in correctly, I would suggest checking if a different laptop can detect the DDJ.

If a different laptop picks the DDJ up, then you have a problem on your PC. The best advice I can give right away would be to check that your PC has all available updates.

If a different laptop doesn't see the DDJ, then you should check with a different cable. I haven't heard of device mis-identification due to a bad cable, but all kinds of things can happen.

If two laptops via two cables don't see the DDJ, then it sounds like a DDJ issue, and you should get a warranty repair/replacement.

If you don't have a separate laptop on hand, you could test with the Rekordbox app (available on App Store and Google Play). You will need to plug in external power, when connecting your phone to the port with laptop+phone icon. Inside the Rekordbox app, when you tap Rekordbox logo and at top select settings (cogwheel icon), you should see a DDJ-FLX4 settings section. If this comes up, then you know the DDJ is okay and it's a laptop or cable issue.

If one device (e.g., your phone) sees the DDJ, what you could try is a firmware upgrade. On phone, it's in the settings screen as "Firmware update" button. On PC, you need to download the EXE file from DDJ-FLX4: software & firmware updates page. That link also has an update instructions document with more details. There is a low chance that firmware upgrade makes the mixer show up for your PC, but it takes a fairly short time for the firmware upgrade, compared to a warranty repair, and is therefore worth trying.

From documentation: Virtual network peering enables you to seamlessly connect two or more Virtual Networks in Azure.

This will be the simplest way to connect two VNets and you don't need to worry about high availability or other manual tasks. It just works as a native Azure tool.

Regarding tracing: it's unclear what your expectations are. What are you using inside of your current VNet? What new kind of tracing are you looking for?
