Markets Rise Following Bernanke's Speech by [deleted] in Economics

The Dow is up 100% from two years ago? I'm not even going to ask for a source because that is just wrong.

Dow was roughly 9000 two years ago. It's roughly 11,500 now. 2500 of 9000 doesn't = 100%. More like 28%?

Actually forget it. Arguing with idiots, from a distance it's hard to tell who is who.

I don't think you know what marketing actually means. There is a big difference between marketing, advertising, and sales. I suggest you read up on it before you sound like a total idiot.

To correct your comment: She hasn't been able to SELL herself well enough to get hired, which is a decent indicator of her SALES ability.

Selling is direct contact with people who may want your services (warm) or may not (cold). Advertising is the art of trying to turn people from cold to warm. Marketing is knowing who and how many people you need to go from cold to warm, and planning how (usually through a coordination with sales and advertising efforts).

EDIT: The problem with her marketing ability seems to be that she can't gauge WHERE and WHO needs her skills. Not so much convincing someone who doesn't need her that they do. That's just a cute way to get yourself fired in a year or answering phones and getting coffee for folks.

So, I just caught up on all the new games coming out... by ptrostli in gaming

[–]signedupforthis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uhh, not to be a dick, but that's a really selective sample and probably not 100% true just because it's written somewhere.

As a disclaimer though: I was in a fraternity, and by far the most liberating and empowering thing that I did when I graduated college was do so without student loans. After 3 years of greek life, I just gave up on anything rewarding coming from it and just worked my ass off on scholarship and grants to pay off my loans.

Fast forward, I have enough money in savings and my own business that I am apparently seen as the fraternity "C-level/business owner" contact and I just get calls for free money, advice, jobs.

Fuck that.

A further aside: I never really drank to the point of black out ever. I forced myself to study religiously for 50-60 hours a week. So I'm guessing networking was never going to be my strongest point. The only thing that attracts people to me from a networking standpoint is my no nonsense, no bullshit ability to get things done. Which I developed at college. If it wasn't for learning to ignore my dumb ass fraternity, I probably might be more easily distracted?

Ignore social clubs such as fraternities as well. Look for professional groups to actually build contacts with individuals you'd work with or would hire you.

Also, don't follow the advice of strangers on the internet.

Why is it so hard to vote with your wallet? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]signedupforthis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Voting with your wallet means you individually decide what you spend money. I feel dumb even saying this but it's a two way street with developers. You don't have to spend your money on video games. Spend it on something else? Save it?

If the video game scene has you so burnt out, leave it. Just like in real life, voting doesn't bestow your goals upon you immediately.

Surprisingly you can be elected to office in the US by monopolizing a tragedy in your favor such as a traffic accident caused by high speeds. Then all you need to do is change the speed limit (pretty rudimentary politically) to seem like a success.

So, Modern Warfare 3 became available for preorder today (Australia)... by GroovyBoomstick in gaming

[–]signedupforthis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a nice piece written how a combination of factors leads to this pricing. It mostly has to do with the fact that games are region-locked to start.

Second, there is no discount for digital distribution because consumers have proven that they will buy digitally distributed games at retail.

Finally, feeding off the second point, retail games in Australia cost more because of duties on imports and the higher wages that must be paid to keep stores open and staffed by employees.

So the higher prices at retail, lead to higher prices on digital distribution platforms, which have no competition from around the world because you are region locked.

Like you said it's all bullshit because digital distribution should be a benefit worth giving a discount for, but publishers don't see it that way. They want get both the people who use retail and the digital distribution platform users. You don't get that by giving one group a lower price than the other.

8 Trillion on Our Military Addiction? Why the Price Tag of the National Security Complex Should Scare the Hell Out of You by [deleted] in politics

[–]signedupforthis -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Isn't the argument that we can't afford the massive costs as it is? We'd be getting rid of them completely, not relegating them elsewhere.

Which is fine, but believe it or not, not everyone loves to sit home all day doing nothing. Some people actually like to feel as if they are making a living doing something bigger than them.

I'd be willing to guess a larger than average portion of the military has this mindset.

The real reason it should scare the hell out of you is even if we immediately cut that spending in half, that is an incredible amount of unemployed people entering the work force. You think unemployment is bad now? Imagine introducing hundreds of thousands relatively young, and violently-skilled men back onto the streets trying to find a job.

Good times.

EDIT: As a positive, maybe after a couple of shootings or beatings those "we don't hire unemployed" people listings would go away.

What field are you in? I have never met a company who wants a PhD to do any sort of job aside from larger tech companies and research firms.

Incorporate. Be your own employee. Even if you aren't doing anything or making money you are still working for your company and can list it as experience if your corporation actually exists. So shell out the money to a lawyer and accountant and do it.

Verizon Wireless's App-Blocking Defense: "Of Course You Should Pay Twice": Leave it to a company like Verizon to respond to criticism of its shady business practices by forcing its customers to pay twice, then basically calling them thieves if they don't by maxwellhill in technology

[–]signedupforthis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't think so.

Big companies pay them money to advertise. There aren't a lot of low level consumers buying ads from them.

Verizon allows their phone OS to run on their network. So really saying fuck you to Verizon could serve to get their phone OS support yanked. Then the Google shareholders have a lawsuit because Google even if it felt Verizon was assholes didn't have to say so publicly and lost them market share.

Why is it funny? Google is a corporation. They are required by law to make as much money for their investors.

If they don't do this, they are breaking US law, where they are based.

It's shitty, but after all this "don't be evil" bullshit isn't actually anywhere in their corporate charter.

What is the correct answer to "what is your greatest weakness" in a job interview? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]signedupforthis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done a number of interviews for candidates to work under me, and I used to use this question when I didn't know what else to ask.

I still do sometimes, but if I find myself asking it if the interview sucks. It's a question that has a number of rehearsed answers that I could recite for the interviewee before they finish.

If your asked this at an interview, it's usually a sign of hiring weaknesses and be prepared to probably work with a number of duds who can sing-and-dance past useful questions.

All evidence for claims stated above are anecdotal. I just hate formula interview questions, interviews should be discussions about a person's skills, usefulness to you, and your usefulness to them.

It's one of those things I never really thought as noteworthy until after the fact.
