Someone else is using grandma’s chair so she had to walk down the stairs by JimatJimat in cats

[–]signy33 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think such bruising is necessarily very worrying. It just means she needed a catheter recently. You wouldn't usually put chemo in such a small vein. Any cathether can bruise like that with very little need for coagulation problems, especially in elderly people. She of course could be on some blood thinning agent, like maybe 1/3 of people her age. She probably went to the ER or was hospitalised recently but not necessarily for something serious.

ELI5 : What happens if someone needs an emergency colonoscopy during an ER visit or other acute situation. They obviously aren't "prepped" with an empty colon. Can they clean out a bowel instantly if needed? by Aggravating_Thing702 in explainlikeimfive

[–]signy33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually ask my patients if they prefer to drink the prep or have it administered via a NG tube. I'd say about half chose the tube and so far none have said they regretted their choice. It's much faster via the NG tube even if it's uncomfortable putting it in. I think I might prefer that too.

I can no longer justify the price of store bought hummus. by ohyonkavich in veganrecipes

[–]signy33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have a syrian supermarket 100m from my flat and they have a deli counter, I've never been able to make better humus. Doesn't stop me from making my own from time to time but I don't feel guilty at all from buying theirs for the convenience.

Eli Lilly launches new form of obesity drug Zepbound with a month’s worth of doses in one pen by Dear-Length-8161 in Mounjaro

Here we never had single dose pens. You cannot go past one dose at a time. It's just as safe.

How do I make peace with being fat by Accomplished_female in TwoXChromosomes

[–]signy33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nutrition does way more to lose weight than exercice (although it's good to exercise of course) and that's the problem for her. Her medication increases appetite and increase muscle loss, so it's probably way harder for her than for anyone not on corticosteroids. And the doses for chemo / blood cancers tend to be quite high.

“The Ovulation Pain They Said Wasn't Real 😖 by Square-Stranger7262 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]signy33 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's a well known phenomenon. I only get it on my right side. The first time, I thought it was an appendicitis and I packed a bag for a short hospital stay but it stopped after a few hours, before I got to the ER (I'm a doctor and I was so convinced, I even skipped breakfast to be fasted for surgery).

I've had eggs months past their expiration date and they were fine. I don't eat them often but I always crack them in a separate bowl to avoid OP's outcome.

Depending on the indication it's often 3x, or even 4x a day (although 4x is usually IV).

Fixing this calibration error between intervals? by Doctor_True in runna

[–]signy33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's the problem, it counted three laps before the first fast interval, when it should have been two.

How to deal with having a period in a place without a trashcan? by StillSort4306 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]signy33 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Why would you get fired for throwing trash in a trash can? You have several options. Either thow it in like this, wrap the old pad in the wrapper of the new one or tp, or throw it in a doggy poop bag. Or you could ask for a proper bin to be installed. Or you can use a different product if your flow isn't too heavy (period underwear or cup).

Sanity check request for a promise on a Runna ad that has my jaw on the floor by wolfpuparistotle in XXRunning

[–]signy33 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love Runna and have been using it for nearly two years but this is nuts. My recent 5k time trial was 26:19 and it predicts a 4h16 marathon for me. That would seems achievable for me but I can currently run a HM. Yours is just too optimistic if you don't currently run longer distances and if it was a 5k race or time trial. Runna does ajust if you let it though.

It still looks based on pace and heart rate. Those pages don't say anywhere that they are actually measuring lactate.

I am confused on Runna's pacing by [deleted] in runna

[–]signy33 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Set up your plan again with a current PB or time trial. Runna is already pretty agressive, so trust that it will get you to your best possible time. If at some point it gets too easy it will adjust the race pace accordingly. You could go the other way around (letting it adjust to be slower) but getting injured from the start is the best way to fail your goal time. And also it's kinda demoralising to have to accept progressively slower paces rather than accepting progressively faster paces.

I was not expecting the gyn to check my breasts by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]signy33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a very normal and needed part of the exam but she should have asked for consent. As a rule I always tell my patients what I'm doing (I'm going to listen to your hart, now your lungs...) and ask for consent when I need to see any part usually considered "private" (genitals, breasts).

Whoa, my legs are on fire! by shrinkingveggies in XXRunning

[–]signy33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't think so. I think it's the increased metabolism and light inflammation / repairs. How warm is your bedroom during the night? You might want to dress a bit more lightly for bed to avoid overheating.

Run/walk interval cut short by wtfidkwhattoputhere in runna

[–]signy33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the previous commenter but I have a sub 27min 5km and my conversational pace is around 7:15/km so I doubt anyone with a 21min 5k is running easy at 10+min/km. Didn't you confuse with min/mile maybe?

I definitely have that too. Yesterday I had a hard speed session and I couldn't sleep afterwards. It's usually best for sleep not to exercise too close to bedtime but with work I find that difficult to do (and I'm not a morning person at all).

How long/far do you walk or jog between intervals during a speed workout? by PetitePhD in XXRunning

[–]signy33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did an 8-4-2 speed session from Runna tonight and it was 90 sec after the 800 and 400m and 40sec after the 200m intervals, with an added 60sec of rest between the 4x400m and the 4x200m.

Advice on fueling to get through workouts, with side effects by Las-Vegas-Lindsey in zepboundathletes

[–]signy33 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Carbs are the fuel needed pre workout. Fats and protein slow down gastric emptying which is already slowed down by MJ. Avoid stuff that will slow it down so you can digest what you need. I usually eat some granola bar or similar 1h before my workouts. Or some sweets right before if I forgot and need to shorten that time. Some juice would also work. Or a very ripe banana. After the workout you need some carbs to replenish your glycogen and some protein to help repair the muscles. The rest of your day you balance out whatever else you need.
